Family-run Aberfeldy cafe reopens after major refurbishment
Piece sandwich and cake shop in Bridgend has had a three-month revamp.
Zoe and George Dark, 40, set up the business in 2020 as a takeaway.
They have now added a 12-person seating area and new toilets.
Zoe, 56, told The Courier the whole family helped with the refurbishment.
She said: 'We stripped out our old shop and re-did it.
'We're a completely family-run business and we have Mariia, who lives with us.
'She's a Ukrainian refugee.
'Mariia and her two little boys have been with us for three years, and she works in the shop too, as well as my son Oscar.
'Our sons Monte and Fynn also work here during their university and college holidays.
'At the end of January we closed and Mariia, George, and Oscar did all the work themselves!
'I did all the design elements like re-covering chairs and making it a little bit quirky.
'We wanted to make it more family-friendly, so people can sit-in and we now have toilets.
'There are already a lot of cafes in Aberfeldy that offer a sit-in experience but the town is an incredibly busy place.
'We are right in the square and it seemed like we were missing a trick by not offering the option to sit-in.'
Zoe said the menu at Piece will remain the same.
The cafe sells sandwiches, ciabattas, focaccia, wraps, salads, breakfast menu and gluten-free homemade cakes.
Zoe said they provide catering services for weddings, parties and outdoor events.
This has prompted the firm's expansion in the past five years.
Zoe added that Piece will apply for a licence next month to open for evening meals three nights a week.
'We will do charcuterie boards and some lovely wine selections from a friend of mine who has two wine bars in Aberdeen.
'We plan to do tapas nights as well.
'We are really grateful to all our customers who come in because we wouldn't be able to do this without them.'
Elsewhere in Highland Perthshire, 30 homes could be built on the site of an old primary school in Crieff.

Multi-millionaire property mogul Mikhail Kenin was apparently healthy and his cause of death has not been officially disclosed. The 'preliminary assessment' of doctors was that he suffered 'acute heart failure' according to business news paper Vedomosti. His is the latest in a series of mysterious deaths of leading figures in Russia since shortly before the start of the war against Ukraine. Reports have linked Mr Kenin to Putin's defence minister at the start of the war, Sergei Shoigu. It comes as a woman vanishes in car crash - then turns up months later with wild story. Mr Shoigu is now secretary of the Kremlin's powerful security council - but is seen as out of favour with the Russian dictator. Numerous senior Shoigu officials at the defence ministry have been fired or accused of corruption and arrested. His deputy defence minister Timur Ivanov was last month sentenced to 13 years in jail for embezzlement, money laundering, and related corruption charges. Mr Kenin was also linked to the family of wealthy Moscow region governor Andrey Vorobyov. Rumours say the businessman acted as holder of the secret fortunes of some senior Russian officials. He made his fortune from his major stake in Samolet Group, which was at one point worth more than $1 billion. Today there was swirling speculation that the group's valuable assets could be swallowed by in-favour members of the Putin circle. Samolet announced Kenin's death at only 56 without explaining the cause. It said: 'We are sad to confirm that [on Sunday] entrepreneur and investor Mikhail Kenin passed away." The firm said he was 'one of those people who leave their mark on the earth… a rare person, gifted with natural talents, an excellent organiser and successful entrepreneur… ready to take risks and make difficult decisions.' Mr Kenin had created Russia's largest property development firm. It is known he had been trying to dispose of his shares when he mysteriously died. Ukrainian political analyst Ivan Yakovina claimed: 'The Kremlin forbade anyone from buying them. Now, apparently, they will go to new owners for free.' Mr Kenin's heir is apparently his socialite daughter Michelle, 32, a former tennis player, who lives in London and Dubai. Russian independent Telegram channel VChK-OGPU alleged Kenin was a 'nominee of the Shoigu clan'. It said he had 'suddenly passed away' and 'whether this death is accidental or a logical continuation of the company's problems will be revealed over time". It added: 'For a long time, Kenin was unable to sell his share in Samolet, as the investment environment and the negative atmosphere around the company clearly hindered this. 'If Samolet announces its 'landing' [with a new owner] in the near future, no one will be surprised.'

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has been tasked with raising cash through player sales ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline Andrea Berta has worked around the clock to secure new signings for Mikel Arteta since joining Arsenal as sporting director in March. Speaking after the 3-0 win over Athletic Club, Arteta made it clear the club need to get players out of the door. He said when asked if Arsenal's business where incomings are concerned is done: "Let's see what happens in terms of where the squad is in the next few weeks. We are actively looking at options, there are a few players that maybe have to leave as well. We are open to seeing what happens." A host of fringe stars are up for grabs. Fulham remain in discussions over a swoop for Reiss Nelson following his loan spell at Craven Cottage last season. Marco Silva's side recently paused those talks and pivoted to Shakhtar Donetsk's Kevin but their proposal was knocked back by the Ukrainian side and the 22-year-old also failed to warm to a move to west London, anyway. Fulham have been trying to structure an initial loan but the Gunners favour a permanent deal even though Nelson made an impression on their pre-season tour of Asia. Arsenal view him as one of their most-sellable assets and any transfer would also reflect 100 per cent profit against PSR regulations as he's a Hale End academy graduate. Then there's Fabio Vieira, a £34.7m arrival from Porto in the summer of 2022 that is still yet to find his feet at the Emirates. Stuttgart are continuing discussions over a permanent transfer with Arsenal seeking a package worth up to £17.35m (€20m). The Germans have the cash to hand as Frenchman Enzo Millot has opted to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. Vieira has been told he can depart and is yet to feature in pre-season after being handed an extensive break by Arteta following his involvement at the Club World Cup with Porto. The Portuguese giants also recently made a £23.4m offer - an initial loan with an obligation to buy - for defender Jakub Kiwior but it was not entertained by Arsenal, who are still easing Gabriel back into the side following hamstring surgery in April. Kiwior is also admired by Juventus and other Italian sides but unless he makes it clear he wants to go - Arteta would be more than happy to keep the Pole as he is highly-rated by the club. Goalkeeper Karl Hein is attracting interest from Levante and Rangers, Sevilla had also been keen but they're tying up a loan swoop for Newcastle's Odysseas Vlachodimos. Levante are eyeing a loan but Arsenal are prioritising a permanent sale as it's believed the Estonia international's contract expires in 2026. Oleksandr Zinchenko can also depart as his deal is also up next summer but his wages are an issue. AC Milan made enquiries earlier in the window but since then, there has been minimal movement despite speculative links with Fulham. Arsenal have also struggled to find buyers for midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga following loan spells with Sevilla and Luton Town. The Gunners are ready to move the Belgian on but they're yet to receive formal offers for the 25-year-old. After Saturday's win, Arteta observed a post-match training session on the pitch and those that played limited or no minutes were involved including Vieira and Hein, who were not even in the squad against Athletic Club. Striker Gabriel Jesus has attracted interest from Brazil but he is currently prioritising his recovery after undergoing knee surgery in January. Respectable bids for Leandro Trossard would also likely be considered, though it's still not guaranteed he will depart. The Premier League title contenders are open to adding another marquee addition but their spending power may yet be dictated by the funds they recoup from departures.

The announcement comes on the same day a Trump-imposed deadline on Putin to end the war in Ukraine expires. Talks have been floated for months and were initially supposed to include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with Trump facilitating the negotiations. On July 28, Trump announced that he would be giving Russia 10 to 12 days to end its three-year war on Ukraine or face "stiff tariffs." That deadline falls on Aug. 8. Trump has threatened to impose "secondary tariffs" of up to 100% on countries that trade with Russia, particularly those in the energy sector. The president also this week signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India in retaliation for the country's Russian oil imports, doubling India's U.S. tariff rate to 50%.
