Indian team in study of AI tool to predict irregular heartbeats

Mumbai: A medical team from India was part of a study that showed artificial intelligence (AI) could predict life-threatening irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias two weeks in advance.
"This is a proof-of-concept study which has the potential to save thousands of lives by enabling timely intervention and preventing sudden cardiac death (SCD)," said Dr Kumar Narayanan, a senior cardiologist from Medicover Hospital, Hyderabad, and deputy chair of the Lancet SCD (Sudden Cardiac Death) Commission. He was the only Indian cardiologist in this six-country study led by Inserm, Paris Cité University.
The study, published in the indexed 'European Heart Journal' last month, analysed millions of hours of heartbeats through the AI model. Roughly 2.4 lakh ambulatory electrocardiograms (ECG) from six countries were used to train a deep learning AI model so that it could pick up and learn to predict imminent arrhythmias. A few hundred ECGs were used from Indian patients for the study.
"The algorithm correctly identified patients who developed fast ventricular tachycardia (VT) — a serious arrhythmia that can trigger cardiac arrest — within the following two weeks with almost 80% accuracy," said the doctor.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) refers to unexpected death from a cardiac cause within minutes of the onset of symptoms. While SCD is often caused by a heart rhythm problem, it can also be triggered by other heart conditions such as heart attack or heart failure.
It's estimated that 4 lakh to 5 lakh SCDs occur in India every year.
While some patients get symptoms such as sudden fainting or chest discomfort, many get no symptoms before collapsing.
"Such an AI tool can help identify individuals at risk for serious arrhythmia and SCD, thereby ensuring prompt intervention," said Narayanan. As this was a proof-of-concept study, the doctor said larger clinical trials are needed before the tool is used in a major way. "The idea is that it will someday be available in wearable technology that can catch irregular rhythm," he added.
Senior cardiologist Dr Ajit Menon from Lilavati Hospital said, "AI has a predictive role in certain situations, especially in rhythm disturbances."
While it can play a role in interpreting cardiovascular imaging, there is still a long way to go. "AI can help us, but doctors have to be the person on the spot making the decision," added Dr Menon.
Professor Dr Charan Lanjewar from KEM Hospital, Parel, said AI already plays some role in diagnosing irregular rhythm among patients who wear smartwatches. "However, it has the potential to be deployed for remote monitoring of patients," he added.

Hyderabad: The District Education Officer (DEO) of Nizamabad, Parshi Ashok, has took on the additional responsibility of teaching mathematics to govt school students every day from 8 am to 9 am. He believes this initiative will help students strengthen their math skills as they enter Class X in the 2025-26 academic year. Ashok conducts the classes via Zoom, voluntarily offering special coaching to the students. So far, as many as 500 students have been attending classes. "Because of summer vacation, students may engage in various sports or other activities of their choice. However, I felt that if they can spare just one hour, they can be better prepared to understand mathematics when the new academic year begins in June," DEO Ashok told TOI. The informal teaching sessions began on April 25 and will continue till June 11. He teaches topics such as quadrilateral angles, trigonometry, and logarithms. Ashok, who holds an MSc degree in mathematics, believes that laying a strong foundation in the subject can foster students' interest and reduce their fear of it. "After SSC, nearly 60 to 70 students who appeared for polytechnic entrance exams were able to secure seats," he said. Some staff members have also joined Ashok in his voluntary effort to teach students. "They should be able to appear for engineering entrance examinations in the future with confidence based on what they are learning now," Ashok said. On May 29, to assess the students' progress, an examination was conducted for 40 students at a ZPHS school from 10 am to 11.30 am. "From their performance in the test, I could gauge that the students had grasped the subject well," he said. Impressed with the DEO himself taking classes for their children, the parents of the students felicitated him. While more students have shown interest in joining the Zoom classes in Nizamabad now, the platform's 500-participant limit is proving to be a hurdle. Gundeti Bhavana, a student of Telangana Model School in Asifabad, had the opportunity to learn from the DEO Ashok and Madhukar during her ninth and tenth standards. Now, a second-year student at IIIT-Basar, the 17-year-old said, "Like many others, I greatly benefitted from the teaching and the special interest given to our studies." She is currently enrolled in a six-year integrated B Tech programme after Class X. Another student, Salpana Lavanya, who completed her Intermediate, is planning to pursue nursing. A student of ZPSS Vempally, Lavanya said the online classes helped her understand the subjects better. She opted for BiPC in Intermediate, as she has a strong interest in Science.

Ghaziabad: As you enter Modinagar via the Ghaziabad-Meerut highway, your attention is inevitably diverted to this long winding stretch of hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and diagnostic centres. The scene unfolds like a chaotic bazaar — but instead of vegetables or spices, this is a medical mandi. Towering hoardings and brightly painted signboards jostle for attention, each advertising a doctor, a diagnostic centre, or a pharmacy. "Specialist in skin disorders," reads one billboard, while another promises "state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities". Pharmacies line the sidewalks, their shelves spilling over with medicine boxes, while lab technicians in white coats call out to customers, offering express blood test services. The street hums with activity during the day between 10am and 1pm, and between 4pm and 7pm, when OPDs are open, patients streaming in and out of clinics, and attendants carrying reports and prescriptions… all eager to see their known family doctors. The air is one of familiarity and faith. This hospital shut down by 1985 but around the same time, KN Modi set up a Modi Eye Hospital which provided free treatment and eye surgeries to the poor and general OPDs," said Dr SK Sharma, president of Private Chikitsak Medical Association, Modinagar. Recalling how a boom of private practice began in Modinagar, Dr Satendra Kumar, owner of Sarvodaya Hospital, said that he came to Modinagar in 1984 to practice at the Modi Eye Hospital after graduating from Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College, Meerut. "After practicing at the eye hospital and also running my own private clinic for 10 years, I opened my own hospital in 1994. Several other doctors like me had the same trajectory," he adds. Dr Rajesh Sharma, who runs a clinic in Modinagar since 1989, said, "My father started his medical store in the early '80s when industries were shutting down, and labourers needed affordable care here." "By 1989, I opened my clinic here, and the demand just kept growing." He added that most doctors who were practicing gynaecologists opened their own nursing homes as well. "For doctors graduating from LLRM Medical College during the 80s and 90s, Modinagar was the closest option to practice since the city was developed compared to other areas and was closer than Ghaziabad for doctors belonging to Saharanpur, Modinagar, Muradnagar, Muzaffarnagar. Today, maximum number of doctors here are natives of the nearby villages," said Dr Navneet. The 3km-kilometre medical corridor — buzzing for decades with clinics, pharmacies, and diagnostic labs — continues to hum with its familiar, everyday urgency, now with new rhythm, brought in by the RRTS (Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System). The high-speed rail extended the reach of this medical haven. Long-time patients who once found it too tedious to return are now taking the train and revisiting their trusted clinics they hadn't visited in years. "We're seeing more patients from Ghaziabad and even Noida now. Some are old faces, some are bringing their children for the first time," says Anju Tyagi, who manages a small pharmacy. A community For locals like Bhopal Singh, a resident of Khanjarpur village, the availability of diverse medical services in Modinagar is a lifeline. "I can get everything done here —consultations, tests, medicines — and at a cost that doesn't break the bank. We don't need to go to Ghaziabad or Meerut," he says. This sentiment resonates with Priyanka, a Modinagar resident who had brought her son for a paediatric checkup. "I've been visiting the same paediatrician for years. Even as new clinics open, we stick to the doctors we know because they treat us like family," she shares. Modinagar's doctors form a close-knit community that thrives on collaboration. "The doctors' community is very strong here and all of us have set up our practice in the same 3km radius as doctors usually like to stick together. Even though it may look like there must be a lot of competition, that is not the case," said Dr. Yogesh Singhal, who started the Pyarelal Hospital in 2005. "We share resources and refer patients to each other, ensuring they get the best possible care. It's not just about competition; it's about serving the community," said Dr Singhal, who is also the president of IMA Modinagar chapter. This camaraderie extends to second-generation doctors who are returning to their roots. Dr. Puru Tyagi, a nephrologist, moved back to Modinagar with his wife, an obstetrician, after practicing in Bengaluru from 2017 to 2021. His father Dr Satish Tyagi set up his clinic in Modinagar in 1985 while his mother, a gynaecologist, worked at the Modi Eye Hospital. "I realized that Modinagar offers a unique opportunity to practice ethically and build lasting relationships with patients. The cost of living is low, and word-of-mouth referrals keep our practices thriving," he explains. The cost-effectiveness of healthcare in Modinagar is a significant draw too. "Treatments here cost about one-third of what you'd pay in Ghaziabad or Delhi," says Dr. Satendra. "For the rural population, this affordability combined with quality care is invaluable." Most hospitals are ailment-specific, catering to specific needs rather than offering comprehensive multi-specialty care. Locals, for instance, know which hospital is best for orthopaedic treatment and which one to visit for kidney stones. This specialization has allowed multiple facilities to coexist, each carving a niche for itself and collectively turning the area into a dense and trusted healthcare hub. The challenges Despite its success, the place faces certain challenges. Advanced medical equipment and super-specialty treatments are still limited due to high costs and lower returns. "We don't have facilities for cardiac surgeries or neurosurgeries," says Dr Yogesh Singhal. "These require expensive equipment, and the patient volume doesn't justify the investment. But we focus on delivering personalised care, which is just as important. "

In today's digital age, smartphones have become an integral part of life, transforming family communication, especially among adolescents. With India's adolescent population reaching 253 million, understanding how digital media influences their relationships is crucial for shaping societal dynamics. Today's adolescents are the first generation to grow up fully immersed in digital technology. Data gleaned from my research sample reveal that 86% of Indian adolescents have smartphones, with over 30% spending more than six hours daily online. Platforms such as Instagram and social media dominate, with 72% of teens reportedly addicted to social media. While digital media enables connectivity, it presents challenges. Though 81% of adolescents use social media to stay connected with friends, only 61% communicate regularly with family members. This reliance on virtual interactions has led to a decline in face-to-face communication, weakening familial bonds and raising concerns about emotional disconnect. Excessive screen time affects adolescents' physical and mental health. Sleep disruption is common, impairing focus, academic performance, and emotional stability. Sedentary lifestyles contribute to obesity and related health issues. Emotionally, social media's curated content fosters anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, as teens compare themselves to idealised online personas. Family interactions diminish further as adolescents become engrossed in their digital worlds. Parents find it increasingly difficult to engage them meaningfully, leading to emotional gaps within families. While digital media offers benefits such as learning opportunities and social exposure, its overuse can hinder healthy development if not managed properly. Parents are concerned about their children's dependence on screens, noting difficulty in maintaining eye contact and meaningful conversations. Family time is often sacrificed for digital entertainment, creating a divide between virtual and real-life relationships. Many adolescents find online interactions more engaging than face-to-face conversations, straining family bonds and complicating efforts to reconnect. Digital media is not inherently harmful. When used responsibly, it can enhance learning and social connectivity. Incorporating digital literacy into curricula can educate students about the advantages and risks of technology. Combining traditional teaching with controlled digital exposure can prevent overuse. Awareness programmes for students and parents further bridge knowledge gaps. Encouraging offline activities such as sports, arts, and face-to-face communication helps balance digital engagement. Implementing tech-free zones in classrooms and collaborating with mental health experts to address digital addiction are essential strategies. India's National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 advocates hybrid learning, blending online and offline education. While this offers flexibility, it increases screen time, potentially intensifying issues such as eye strain, inactivity, and digital dependence. Virtual classes reduce opportunities for in-person family interactions, risking further emotional distancing. To mitigate these effects, schools and families must work together, establishing routines that balance online learning with offline activities such as outdoor play, family time, and hands-on projects. Addressing the influence of digital media on family communication requires coordinated efforts: Parents should set limits on screen time through digital curfews. They should engage in co-viewing and shared activities, and foster open conversations about responsible media use, and model healthy digital habits. Adolescents should practise self-regulation to control screen time, prioritise face-to-face interactions to develop social skills, engage in offline hobbies and extracurriculars, and educate themselves about digital media's benefits and risks. Policymakers should enforce regulations on age-appropriate content, launch awareness campaigns on the psychological impacts of digital overuse,and encourage tech companies to incorporate features promoting healthier habits, and integrate digital wellness education into school programmes. As digital media continues to reshape communication, achieving a balance between virtual and real-world interactions is vital. Collaboration among families, educators, and policymakers can foster responsible digital use, ensuring technology enhances rather than hampers human connection. Mindful engagement with digital media can preserve the irreplaceable value of face-to-face relationships while harnessing the benefits of technology.
