HC upholds life imprisonment of 6 men convicted of double murder
A division bench of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo and Justice Chittaranjan Dash dismissed the criminal appeals filed by the convicts against the 1998 trial court verdict, observing that the prosecution had successfully proved its case through credible witness accounts and corroborating medical evidence.
The incident took place on June 19, 1996, at Indupur village under Kendrapada police station limits. According to the prosecution, the victims were attacked in broad daylight on a village road using deadly weapons — including a crowbar, spear and bhujali (a type of dagger) — following a quarrel over non-repayment of a loan of Rs 1,000 allegedly given by Sankarsan.
Both men succumbed to their injuries at the district headquarters hospital in Kendrapara.
The additional sessions judge, Kendrapada, had on Sept 22, 1998, convicted nine persons and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The convicts had challenged the verdict in the high court the same year. However, during the pendency of the appeals, three of them died and the proceedings against them were abated last year.
"The case in hand depicts a painful and distressing event of double murder committed in front of the relations on the village street just in connection with non-payment of paltry loan amount of Rs 1,000," the bench observed.

The HC further noted that the evidence of four witnesses was 'clear, consistent and trustworthy', and that their statements were duly supported by medical reports. "We are of the humble view that the learned trial court has rightly found the appellants guilty," the bench said, confirming the convictions and life sentences of Chandi Sethy, Karunakar Sethy, Bulu Sethy, Basanta Sethy, Premananda Sethy and Suratha Sethy under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
All six convicts were out on bail since March 18, 2010. The high court has now cancelled their bail and surety bonds and directed them to surrender before the trial court within 15 days. "In case of failure to surrender, the learned trial court shall take appropriate steps for their arrest and send them to judicial custody," the HC ordered.

Red Sandalwood Worth Rs 40 Lakh Seized From House In Andhra Pradesh Village
Red sandalwood logs worth Rs 40 lakh have been seized from a house in a village in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor District. Acting on specific intelligence, officials of the Palamaneru forest department raided the house of a man identified as Bhaskar Reddy in Alapalli Kothuru village on Monday. "The team seized 144 A-grade red sandalwood logs worth Rs 40 lakh," said an official. "Reddy is on the run. Efforts are on to trace him," the official added. Andhra Pradesh has been cracking down on the illegal trade of red sandalwood, a species that is native and endemic to the state's forests. The wood is highly sought after internationally, particularly in countries like China and Japan, where it is used for furniture, carvings, and traditional medicines. This high demand has fuelled a multi-crore smuggling industry.

CBI arrests Meerut CGHS official, 2 more accepting bribe at hospitals complaint
New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an additional director of CGHS, Meerut, on Tuesday and two more for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 50 lakh from a hospital for not de-empanelling them from a government scheme, an official said. The probe agency arrested Additional Director Ajay Kumar and office Superintendent Lavesh Solanki, both posted in Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Swasthya Bhavan Meerut, and a middleman, Raees Ahmad. The CBI had earlier booked them on a complaint from a director of the hospital group, alleging that Kumar and his cronies demanded a bribe for not de-empanelling two hospitals affiliated with the group. The complaint centred around a surprise inspection conducted by a team from CGHS Meerut on July 8 at two of the group's hospitals. The CGHS team issued notices citing 'frivolous deficiencies" in both facilities and threatened to de-empanel them, allegedly to extort money, they said. The de-empanelment of the hospitals would have rendered them ineligible for treating patients under the CGHS scheme. 'Both the accused public servants had insisted on the delivery of bribe amount of Rs 50 lakh at the earliest to avoid de-empanelment of the hospitals," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement. The officials agreed to accept a partial payment of Rs 5 lakh as the first instalment of the bribe, but then the hospital complained. A team raided the premises where Kumar, Solanki and Ahmad were caught red-handed while taking the bribe, the spokesperson said. The agency also conducted searches at the residences of the accused.
