Negative Rates Return to Switzerland as U.S. Faces Higher Yields. What Does it Mean for Bitcoin?

As President Donald Trump's trade war threatens to upend the global economy, an interesting divergence has emerged that could potentially grease the bitcoin BTC bull run. The divergence in consideration is the elevated yields on U.S. Treasury notes that threaten to compound the fiscal issues, and the renewed negative flip in yields on Swiss government bonds. According to data source Swiss government bonds with maturities of up to five years offered negative yields at press time, with the two-year yield at -17.8 basis points. On the contrary, similar-duration Treasury notes offered yields over 4%. The divergence is the bond market's way of telling us that the trade war will have different impacts on various countries, depending on their trade profiles. Those running trade surpluses, such as several European countries and China, will face disinflation or an outright deflation, while countries like the U.S., which import more than they export, will see an increase in price pressures. The specter of deflation in European nations and China could put pressure on their central banks to ease monetary policy aggressively, likely leading to increased capital deployment into alternative investments like bitcoin. Both the Swiss National Bank and the European Central Bank have already cut rates in recent months. Meanwhile, analysts have said that higher yields in the U.S. and the record public debt could accelerate the shift away from U.S. assets and into alternative assets. "The last time this happened [Swiss yields turned negative in late 2019], it preceded coordinated global easing, repo market seizures, and ultimately pandemic-era QE. Now, it likely reflects a mix of deflationary pressure, eurozone contagion risks, and capital rotating into monetary sovereignty safe havens amid sovereign stress elsewhere," pseudonymous analyst EndGame Macro said on X. It's worth noting that bitcoin's 2020-2021 bull run from $5,000 to over $60,000 was characterized by a record amount of negative-yielding government debt worldwide. GM claims No. 2 spot in US electric vehicle sales

General Motors Co. topped crosstown rival Ford Motor Co. to take the No. 2 spot in U.S. electric vehicle sales for the first five months of 2025. The Detroit automaker announced 62,000 EVs sold this year through May. Chevrolet carried sales among the company's brands, with 37,000 sold in the United States in that same period. Ford sold 34,132 EVs through May, according to the company. That represents a quarter drop year-over-year as sales of the F-150 Lightning pickup and E-Transit commercial van declined 42% and 93%, respectively. GM saw 94% year-over-year growth in domestic EV sales in the first quarter of 2025 and boasted more than 15% of U.S. EV market share. "Customers are responding in record numbers to our world-class portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles," Rory Harvey, executive vice president and president of global markets, said in a statement. "In the first two months of the second quarter, we more than doubled our EV sales compared to the same period last year." Part of the bump is attributable to price-conscious buyers worried about tariffs raising prices and legislative efforts to strip the $7,500 EV tax credit, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions LLC. "The idea that parts may be in short supply, costs may go up, all of these factors are weighing on the decision-making of buyers today," Fiorani said. "If they believe that they're going to need a vehicle in the next few months, a lot of them have moved to the dealership now to purchase while they believe the prices will be lower." GM still trails Tesla Inc. in EV sales, but CEO Elon Musk's dominance is waning in the face of domestic and Chinese competition. Tesla sold 1.3 million cars in the first quarter of 2025, a 9% decline from the year-earlier period, according to Bloomberg. Tesla's share of the U.S. EV market dropped from almost two-thirds to less than half in the past two years, according to Bloomberg reporting. Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. France's Mistral launches Europe's first AI reasoning model

By Supantha Mukherjee and Kenrick Cai PARIS (Reuters) -Mistral on Tuesday launched Europe's first AI reasoning model, which uses logical thinking to create a response, as it tries to keep pace with American and Chinese rivals at the forefront of AI development. The French startup has attempted to differentiate itself by championing its European roots, winning the support of French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as making some of its models open source in contrast to the proprietary offerings of OpenAI or Alphabet's Google. Mistral is considered Europe's best shot at having a home-grown AI competitor, but has lagged behind in terms of market share and revenue. Reasoning models use chain-of-thought techniques - a process that generates answers with intermediate reasoning abilities when solving complex problems. They could also be a promising path forward in advancing AI's capabilities as the traditional approach of building ever-bigger large language models by adding more data and computing power begins to hit limitations. For Mistral, which was valued by venture capitalists at $6.2 billion, an industry shift away from "scaling up" could give it a window to catch up against better capitalized rivals. China's DeepSeek broke through as a viable competitor in January through its low-cost, open-sourced AI models, including one for reasoning. OpenAI was the first to launch its reasoning models last year, followed by Google a few months later. Meta, which also offers its models open-sourced, has not yet released a standalone reasoning model, though it said its latest top-shelf model has reasoning capabilities. Mistral is launching an open-sourced Magistral Small model and a more powerful version called Magistral Medium for business customers. "The best human thinking isn't linear - it weaves through logic, insight, uncertainty, and discovery. Reasoning language models have enabled us to augment and delegate complex thinking and deep understanding to AI," Mistral said. American companies have mostly kept their most advanced models proprietary, though a handful, such as Meta, has released open-source models. In contrast, Chinese firms ranging from DeepSeek to Alibaba have taken the open-source path to demonstrate their technological capabilities. Mistral Small is available for download on Hugging Face's platform and can reason in languages including English, French, Spanish, Arabic and simplified Chinese.
