Fire ignites at Moss Landing Power Plant again

Yahoo19-02-2025

(KRON) — A new fire broke out at Moss Landing Power Plant Tuesday night when smoldering lithium-ion batteries reignited, officials said.
Batteries burned inside the same building where a massive blaze broke out in January at Vistra's Battery Energy Storage System facility, officials said. The new fire is smaller than January 16's inferno.
The County of Monterey's Department of Emergency Management urged residents who live near the power plant to keep their windows and doors closed because of smoke.
Pajaro Valley Unified School District's superintendent sent a letter to parents on Wednesday morning, writing, 'We are aware of the fire at the Moss Landing power plant and the visible smoke in the air. PVUSD Maintenance & Operations Department is coordinating with the principals of our schools in Monterey County. At this time, out of an abundance of caution, the three schools, Hall District, Ohlone Elementary and Pajaro Middle, will keep windows and doors closed.'
Air quality in the region remained 'good' on Wednesday, according to Monterey Bay Air Resources District officials.
During the January 16 fire, flames spread from one lithium battery to another, county supervisors said. Firefighters said they couldn't battle the blaze because water does not stop battery fires.
'There is no proven way to put out one of these fires once it has reached this magnitude. Attempts to put out battery fires at other sites have only worsened the situation. Water is used initially only when the batteries start to heat, not when flames have emerged,' Supervisor Glenn Church previously wrote.
Earlier this month, a lawsuit was filed against Vistra. National environmental advocate Erin Brockovich teamed up with law firm Singleton Schreiber to represent local residents. 'Defendants knew they were using dangerous lithium-ion batteries, housing them in what they knew was the most dangerous way, and ignored the safety of the community for their own profit,' attorneys wrote in the lawsuit.
Vistra is an electricity and power generation company based in Irving, Texas. The Moss Landing Power Plant site is home to one of the world's biggest battery plants.

SF fountain that divides public opinion to be fenced off

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A controversial fountain along San Francisco's waterfront has been ordered closed off from the public. The Vaillancourt Fountain across from the Ferry Building at Embarcadero Plaza is being fenced off in the interest of public safety, according to city officials. A representative with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department told that a recent report had made it clear that the fountain, in its current state, is a potential hazard. 'The Vaillancourt Fountain was designed for people to interact with,' an official said. 'This report made it clear that is no longer safe.' Two Bay Area restaurants named among 'world's best' by prestigious global ranking According to a Rec and Parks official, parts of the fountain are 'cracked, corroded, or missing,' including a key support rod in one of the structure's arms. The fountain also contains hazardous materials like lead and asbestos. 'As a result, we are fencing it off,' a parks official said. People will still be able to view the fountain, but not to walk through it or get close to it. Installed in 1971, the Vaillancourt Fountain divides public opinion. Fans of brutalist architecture and preservationists have defended the 710-ton sculpture, which has been inactive as a fountain for the past year due to a pump failure. Recently, plans were unveiled for a $30-million renovation of the Embarcadero Plaza and adjoining Sue Bierman Park. The fountain was not pictured in renderings for the planned renovations. Armand Vaillancourt, the Canadian artist behind the fountain, visited SF last month to try and urge city officials to preserve the structure. Parks officials maintain that the report will have no impact on long-term plans for the future of Vaillancourt Fountain. 'This step is strictly about ensuring public safety,' officials told KRON4. 'It doesn't impact the timeline or scope of the broader Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park Renovation Project.' Parks officials maintain that long-term decisions regarding the fountain's future will follow public process established by the San Francisco Arts Commission, including review from the Visual Arts Committee, and will include opportunities for community impact. We Finally Sold Our Fisker Ocean for $10,000

We ended up having to pry one off one of the Ocean's front fascia panels, behind which we found a pair of screws for the hood latch. We removed those, and the hood opened up — and we used that fascia panel to hold it in place, since there's no hood prop. Then it came time to actually charge the battery, which we attempted with a portable jump-start box. The 12-volt battery drained the jump box immediately, which wasn't long enough to provide sufficient electricity to unlock the doors but was enough to set off the piercingly loud car alarm. (Fun!) Eventually, we charged the battery with another vehicle in the Edmunds garage, and that got the Fisker up and running. Was this a final middle-finger gesture from our ailing Ocean or just another item to add to the Fisker's long list of quibbles? Honestly, who cares? We're just glad this thing is finally gone.
