Liberty County softball aiming for region four-peat
BRISTOL, Fla. (WMBB) – The Liberty County softball team is heading into the second half of the season ranked No. 4 in the Rural Class and aiming for a fourth straight regional championship.
There was some uncertainty with the Bulldogs coming into the season as they graduated five seniors last year, three of whom are now playing college softball.
Through the first half of the season, Liberty County (8-2) looks like a contender for another regional championship.
With only two seniors, the Bulldogs have eight players batting over .400, and three over .500, including Northwest Florida State commit Cha'Miya Williams who is batting .625.
Two-time state champion softball coach, Jennifer Sewell says this might be the strongest offensive lineup she's ever had.
'Knock on wood, this is by far one of the better-hitting teams,' Sewell said. 'They seem like they keep getting better. And not to say my other years haven't been great hitting teams, but it's like our one through nine, and if the top of our half has struggled a little bit, the bottom half comes through. But these kids just have no quit. And the one game we lost, we lost to Franklin County, they jumped out ahead of us early, but the kids didn't quit. We battled back and we almost won that game in the end.'
A consistent winning pulls in talented athletes like a magnet and Liberty County's softball team is no different. Despite some new faces on the roster, the players say they're as close as a family.
'We've had a lot of transfers come in this season, and this team definitely gels a lot better than previous teams,' Liberty County senior Chesnee Hires said. 'This team feels like the 2023 state championship team.'
'We all get along with each other and we all want to hang out with each other all the time,' Liberty County junior Cha'Miya Williams said. 'All the time. 'Are you doing something? No. Let's ask if they're doing something.' We'll all go do something together. It's like we want to be together and not in our little groups. We have one group instead of like five or six.'
The Bulldogs fell to the No. 2 ranked Rural team Madison County on Friday afternoon, losing 7-5 in eight innings.

After Smith committed on May 11, four-star cornerback Justice Fitzpatrick, who is the brother of All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, committed on June 3. Smith is the third player in Georgia's signing class to conclude his recruitment, joining Fitzpatrick and three-star wide receiver Brady Marchese, who have also shut down their recruitment. Of course, there's nothing stopping these players from changing their minds later down the road. It is still a long way away from December's early signing period. After a slow start in the recruiting cycle, during which Georgia only had five commits by April, the Bulldogs have ramped up their recruiting efforts. According to 247Sports, Georgia now boasts the fifth-ranked recruiting class in the nation. UGA has the SEC's best class of 2026.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Stephanie Ratcliffe captured Georgia's first hammer throw title since 2010, and the Bulldogs took the team lead at the women's outdoor track and field championships Thursday. Ratcliffe, who also won the hammer title in 2023 while at Harvard, had a national-leading toss of 234 feet, two inches in the fourth round. Georgia leads the team standings with 26 points, followed by Illinois with 16.5 and Washington at 16. The Huskies got a boost when Hana Moll won the pole vault with a collegiate-record toss of 15-8 1/2. Moll, who also won the 2024 indoor title, broke the outdoor record held by her twin sister Amanda.
