Multimillion-record-selling artist is unrecognizable bargain hunting in LA... can you guess who she is?
A multimillion-record-selling artist was unrecognizable when she was glimpsed bargain hunting in Los Angeles this week.
The R&B songstress, who was a childhood schoolmate of the future Marilyn Manson, shot to fame in 1999 with a smash hit single that also netted her a Grammy.
She has earned a total of five Grammy nods and sold more than 25 million records, collaborating with artists ranging from Natalie Cole to Justin Timberlake.
Although her onstage persona recalls the megawatt glamour of a past era, she was the image of the casual shopper on West Hollywood's Melrose Avenue on Thursday.
In a comfy ensemble including cutoff sweats and a hoodie, the 57-year-old was glimpsed selecting clothes from the rack at an outdoor stall.
Can you guess who she is?
She is none other than Macy Gray, whose 1999 single I Try catapulted her to stardom and became a galloping international smash.
Macy, who was born Natalie McIntyre in Ohio and picked her stage name off a mailbox she saw as a child, appeared in bright spirits when she was seen Thursday.
Her outfit included a set of retro red Converse sneakers, plus a textured black cap and a pair of blue shades that gleamed in the sunshine.
Macy's shopping excursion appeared to have been a success, as she was seen with several items slung over one of her arms at the clothes stall.
Since becoming a celebrity at the turn of the century, Macy has released 10 solo studio albums and a number of hit singles like When I See You.
She has worked with artists ranging from Jeff Beck to Ariana Grande, as well as Fatboy Slim, Erykah Badu, Fergie, will.i.am and Dolly Parton, and she was even included on a remix of a song by the late Afropop legend Fela Kuti.
Her music has been featured in projects as varied as the acclaimed movie 8 Mile and an episode of Ugly Betty, and she has acted in films like Training Day and the first instalment of the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.
Macy's career has not been without controversy, such as when she was booed for forgetting the lyrics to The Star-Spangled Banner while singing at an NFL game, or when she narrowly avoided arrest for swearing onstage in Barbados.

About a decade ago, Macy appeared on a Where Are They Now? special hosted by Oprah Winfrey and laid bare her history of substance abuse.
'My drug use started as a result of being on tour,' she explained. 'My crew was from England. All they did was smoke hash all day, and they knew where to get the good ecstasy. So, you start playing with stuff, and then, suddenly, it's like a crutch.'
Ultimately, she gave up her substance habits after looking in the mirror and seeing the effect her hard living was having on her looks, she shared.
She appeared on The Masked Singer this year, and next Monday she will launch a tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album On How Life Is.
Macy recently revealed that she is preparing to release her first solo album in seven years, hinting she could make a surprise appearance at Glastonbury.
'We're probably going to drop a record when we're in the UK,' she explained to The Sun, noting she will be stopping in Britain on tour.

Scooter Braun has shock five-word response to Taylor Swift buying back her albums after pair's infamous feud
Scooter Braun had a surprising response to Taylor Swift buying back her albums after the pair's infamous feud rocked the world of music. Braun and Swift had a huge public fallout in 2019 after he shelled out $300m on the rights to her first six studio albums. At the time, Scooter was the new owner of Taylor's record label, Big Machine Records - and a heartbroken Swift then re-recorded five of those albums in response, re-marketing them as 'Taylor's Version.' Amid their six years of bad blood, Braun had a genial response to Swift acquiring her catalog of recordings, telling US Weekly: 'I am happy for her.' 'To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it,' wrote the Grammy -winner in a handwritten note on her website. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the . The Bad Blood hitmaker said the fact she now owns the rights to all the music she has ever made has brought so much joy to her life she's been bursting into tears. Swift purchased her catalog of recordings that were first released through Big Machine Records. It has taken her six years to close the deal. She acquired those six albums and associated visuals from their most recent owner, Shamrock Capital, for an undisclosed nine-figure sum. However, sources close to the contract negotiations claim the recent figure touted for the buy-back deal of 'between $600million-$1billion' is 'highly inaccurate.' She writes in her letter: 'I'm trying to gather my thoughts into something coherent, but right now my mind is just a flashback sequence of all the times I daydreamed about, wished for, and pined away for a chance to get to tell you this news. 'All the times I was thiiiiis close, reaching out for it, only for it to fall through. I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. 'But that's all in the past now. I've been bursting into tears of joy at random intervals ever since I found out that this is really happening. I really get say to say these words: 'All of the music I've ever made… now belongs… to me.' 'And all my music videos. All the concert films. The album art and photography. The unreleased. songs. The memories. The magic. The madness. Every single era. My entire life's work.' Braun and Swift had a huge public fallout in 2019 after he shelled out $300m on the rights to her first six studio albums - Braun and Justin Bieber pictured 2013 Swift also wrote: 'I know, I know. What about Rep TV? Full transparency. I haven't even re-recorded a quarter of it. 'The Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it. 'All that defiance, that longing to be understood while Feeling purposely misunderstood, that desperate hope, that shame-born snarl and mischief. To be perfectly honest, it's the one album in those first 6 that I thought couldn't be improved upon by redoing it. 'Not the music, or photos, or videos. So I kept putting it off. There will be a time (if you're into the idea) for the unreleased Vault tracks from that album to hatch. I've already completely re-recorded my album, and I really love how it sounds now. 'Those two albums can still have their moments to re-emerge when the time is right, if that would be something you guys would be excited about. 'But if it happens, it won't be from a place of sadness and longing for what I wish I could have. It will just be a celebration now.' Justin Bieber's old manager Braun's company Ithaca Holdings bought the catalog in 2019 before Shamrock acquired it from him a year later. Braun does not profit from the sale. And he was not involved in Shamrock's decision to sell the music. In June of 2021, Braun told Variety that he felt 'regret' over the situation. 'I regret and it makes me sad that Taylor had that reaction to the deal,' he said. 'All of what happened has been very confusing and not based on anything factual.' On Instagram she wrote: 'You belong with me.❤️ Letter on my site :).' Taylor will be reissuing her old Big Machine albums. Those albums were first sold by Big Machine in 2019, something she was not happy with. There will be two fully authorized versions of each of those albums in the marketplace, since she's saying the re-recorded Taylor's Versions will continue to be available alongside the originals. Two of those bonus-filled editions have yet to come out, including the long-awaited Reputation (Taylor's Version). Her letter explained that this new arrangement will not prevent the remaining pair of redo albums from being released. This announcement comes just as Taylor was seen out with a new friend: Dakota Johnson, who is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford abandons wife and four kids for a first-class seat on flight
Matthew Stafford recently left his family in coach to sit first-class on a flight - and the Rams quarterback 'got some looks' as he boarded the plane. Stafford's wife, Kelly, explained on a recent episode of her 'The Morning After' podcast that the couple and their four daughters recently visited her parents and sister in Texas. And while the passer is used to private travel in the NFL, he and Kelly decided to just book a commercial Delta flight. However, what Kelly didn't tell him is that the flight only had three first class seats left, and that she chose to put her husband and his 6-foot-3 frame there by himself. Stafford eventually found out where he was sitting when the family was checking in, and correctly predicted that it would be a bad look. 'He was like, ''I'm gonna look like the biggest a*****e,' Kelly recalled on her podcast, via Us Weekly. 'I go, 'Listen, if people have time to consider you to be an a*****e because your 6-foot-3 self is not gonna sit in the back with everyone in your family who is 5-foot-3 and under, then they've got bigger issues.' Ultimately, Stafford's fears in how he would be would be perceived by sitting away from his family proved to be well-founded. 'As we were getting on, you could tell he got looks,' Kelly said. 'Like, 'Oh wait, we saw you get on with your family but you're up here.' And then you'd see them look for us in the back.' Stafford and Kelly share four daughters together: eight-year-old twins Sawyer and Chandler, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4. And Kelly previously revealed that they'll be embarking on a much further trip - when they fly to London watch the Rams take on the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. Stafford signed a fresh two-year, $84million contract with the Rams over the offseason, which guarantees him $44million for the 2025 season and increases his salary from his previous deal. As he sought a raise, Stafford was linked with several potential trade destinations, including the Giants and Steelers. Ultimately, the Super Bowl LVI winner decided to remain in LA as he enters his 17th NFL season.
