Paul Mullin says he's still in dark over Wrexham exile as loan move explained
Paul Mullin has joined Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2025/26 season after admitting to still feeling confused over being frozen out at Wrexham by Phil Parkinson last term
Paul Mullin has confessed his bewilderment over why he was sidelined at Wrexham following his loan move to Wigan Athletic. The striker quickly became a fan favourite after joining the Welsh side from Cambridge United in July 2021, netting an impressive 110 goals in 172 appearances.
His goal-scoring prowess played a key role in propelling Wrexham from the National League to the Championship, with three consecutive promotions under their belt. The 30-year-old also formed a close bond with the club's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, becoming a familiar face on the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
However, despite his popularity, he didn't see any action in League One in the second half of last season following the arrival of forwards Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez in the January transfer window. It came after a challenging start to the campaign, where Mullin only found the back of the net three times after undergoing back surgery last summer.
He is set to play in the third tier again next term after it was announced on Monday that he would be moving to Wigan on a season-long loan deal. Mullin has now shed light on the difficulties he faced at Wrexham last season and his confusion over why he was dropped from the team by manager Phil Parkinson.
In an interview with talkSPORT, he also hinted that he needed more time than he was given to recover from his back injury.
"It's a strange situation but last year was quite difficult for me," Mullin said. "Wrexham is a place I love, they've changed my life for me and given me many happy times. Last season was tough, as I came back from my back injury.
"When you've been injured and you're coming back, you just need time to find yourself again and there wasn't a lot of time to do that. Then from January onwards, I don't know why, but the gaffer didn't want to use me.
"Coming into the summer, I think the gaffer has just decided to go elsewhere. As much as I love Wrexham, I want to play football and I don't want to be sitting at home every weekend."
He added: "People say it's a dream to be a footballer, but it's so difficult when you're training every day and you don't get to do what you enjoy at the end of the week."
Mullin previously said that reports of a fall-out with Parkinson were wide of the mark, but did admit to feeling resentment over being sidelined in a recent episode of Wrexham's documentary. In the same edition of the series, Parkinson also laid out the situation from his perspective.
"When we brought two strikers in January, we always knew we'd have a surplus, and people would find themselves out of the 18-man squad because you can only have seven substitutes," the former Sunderland and Bolton boss said.
"That's the way it is. Mulls didn't just quite get the goals, which he normally does. I thought he had a good start to the season, and his general performances were decent, but the goals just didn't come.
"So Paul and Ollie [Palmer] found themselves out of the 18-man squad. It's a harder level than we'd been operating at. [They're] both good lads, really good lads, and have carried on training well for us. But it's tough, it's a competitive division and to make the step up is not easy."
Meanwhile, Mullin has put any thoughts regarding his future at Wrexham to one side for now, as he turns his attentions towards reviving his fortunes with the Latics.
"I'm just focusing on Wigan, to be honest, at the moment," he said. "The future is something you can't control - I can only control myself. I want to be as successful as I can in my career.
"Although it's been very good up to date, I want to continue that with Wigan. Hopefully this year, we can be successful and I can be a part of another successful team."

Son gets lovely Welsh tattoo tribute to his mum but there's one big problem
Son gets lovely Welsh tattoo tribute to his mum but there's one big problem It wasn't until he showed his sister that he realised the mistake The tattoo was sentimental to Cai and his family (Image: Cai Morgan ) Cai Morgan decided to honour his mum by getting a tattoo of a Welsh word she uses to inspire and motivate him. The 24-year-old Welsh speaker added his latest tattoo to his collection, commemorating the phrase "Ymlaen", which translates as "forward" and can mean "onwards and upwards" in English. But there was one major problem with Cai's lovely idea- the word was spelt incorrectly. During the pre-appointment with the tattoo artist, Cai sent the correct spelling but when it came to choosing the font on Tuesday (June 24) the English artist accidentally rearranged the letters to spell 'YMAELN". Ymaeln in Welsh means, well absolutely nothing. The tattoo was originally supposed to say "Ymlaen" (Image: Cai Morgan ) Article continues below Although the tattoo is large on Cai's arm, he did not notice the misspelling until his sister, Lowri pointed it out to him when she saw it. Get the latest Rhondda news first by signing up to our newsletter here Cai said: "After I left the shop I sent a picture of it to my sister to just show how cool it was. Then she was texting me 'Cai, Cai you've spelled it wrong." Cai's sister Lowri was the first person to notice the problem (Image: Cai Morgan ) Whilst some people would be devastated, Cai has found the humour in the situation. He said: "I was absolutely flabbergasted. I was just laughing and smiling, Facetiming my sister with my hand over my mouth." Cai moved to East Sussex six-years-ago for university from his home in Hirwaun. Throughout Cai's life his mum and dad have used the phrase "Ymlaen" in times of need, when he needs cheering up or to congratulate positives. When he showed his mum his new tattoo she at first was happy with the sentimentality of the meaning behind it and then she was shocked noticing the misspelling, land then had a laugh along with her son. The tattoo has sentimental value to Cai as his father passed away last year. Cai said: "It was very sentimental as my dad was a very patriotic fluent Welsh speaker, who passed away last year. Him and my mam would always drill the "Ymlaen" mantra into me. "He would be laughing his head off seeing it." Cai's parents drilled the phrase into him growing up (Image: Cai Morgan ) After the artist was made aware of the accidental mistake they offered to retouch up the tattoo once it had been lasered off. Article continues below However, Cai is considering keeping the tattoo and embracing it. He said: "I might move on, embrace the irony of it, you know. Considering it means move forward, it shows we make mistakes, we move forward.

The One Show's Alex Jones' fun Boden skirt now has £39 off
The One Show's Alex Jones' fun Boden skirt now has £39 off The presenter wore the colourful skirt on The One Show this week, and it is a must for Summer holidays. Alex wore the skirt on the One Show on Monday, June 23. (Image: BBC/ The One Show ) If you're on the hunt for the crowning glory of your summer wardrobe, then look no further than Alex Jones' latest fashion discovery. The presenter donned the Verity Linen Midi Skirt from Boden on The One Show on Monday night (June 23), and it ticks all the boxes we're seeking in holiday attire. From its vibrant tropical print to its airy linen fabric and flowing fit, it's truly the ideal choice for a holiday or even just coping with the UK heatwave at home. Now, we have some good news for you, as it's currently part of Boden's massive summer sale. Normally priced at £130, it's now been slashed to £91, saving you nearly £40. Although it's available in seven different prints and patterns, it's Alex's tropical print version that's really grabbed our attention. The bold colours and fun pattern scream summer, with everything from bananas and pineapples to crabs and lobsters emblazoned on the midi skirt in bright summer hues. In an Instagram story, the Welsh presenter described the Boden skirt as fun, before sharing her outfit of the day mirror selfie and heading to the One Show's sofa. You can watch the episode here to see Mrs Jones Thomson's skirt in action. Alex Jones paired the colourful Boden skirt with a red heel and a button up red top. (Image: Instagram @Alexjonesthomson ) The Verity Linen Midi Skirt is designed to sit at your natural waist for a flattering fit, with pleated details which then flare out into a floaty A-line shape with plenty of volume. There's nothing worse than tight, form-fitting clothing in the heat, which is why there's a hidden elasticated waistband at the back to ensure you have room for indulgent dinner you've been craving. The brand have said that it was "made for your next trip to the coast". Made from 80% linen and 20% recycled linen, this fabric is the ideal breezy choice to stay cool even on scorching hot and humid days. It also boasts two handy side pockets, finally ladies, we get pockets! The skirt is currently on sale on the Boden website (Image: Boden ) They have range of sizes from a 4 to a 22, as well as petite, regular or long options. Reviews of the product are very mixed as some mention that the product runs quite small and that you bear this in mind when ordering and potentially you should size up. One person said: "It is a very good quality fabric and perfect for summer. Unfortunately 10P was like 8P and too tight on the waist, would return and get 12P. The length is perfect." However another person said: "Love this beautiful summer skirt. Love that it has the elastic waist band and pockets. Lovely pattern and lots of colours that you can wear lots of different colour tops with. Can't wait to wear it on my cruise. Another said: "I love the cut and material of this skirt. I just ordered another one in navy colours. " However they added: "To make this product even better I would like to see it in other patterns, more muted. Most of the patterns and colours from this brand are too bright for my taste. You can find more muted skirt options like this M&S Ecru denim skirt for £45 that "fits like a glove according to one reviewer. Although, if you are a fan of the colourful skirt trend, you may like this coral pink and orange striped cotton maxi from Next for £40. There is also this beachy shell print Nobody's Child maxi skirt for £75 which will be perfect for the Summer. The brand currently have a deal on for new customers, who will get an additional 15% off using the code HELLO15, which would make the skirt £63.75, saving you £11.25. Article continues below However, if you're keen to acquire the Verity Linen Midi Skirt, you'd best act swiftly, particularly if you're after the exact pattern sported by the Welsh icon. According to Boden's website, the skirt is "selling like hot cakes" and select sizes are beginning to sell out, which may have been due to Alex's televised seal of approval.

Taron Egerton knew he just had to play 'fascinating' and 'disturbing' new TV role
Taron Egerton knew he just had to play 'fascinating' and 'disturbing' new TV role Taron Egerton stars as an arson investigator in the new Apple TV+ series, Smoke, which is inspired by the true crime story of a serial arsonist who set fire to businesses in Southern California The Welsh actor is said to have taken on a role in the new series Smoke without prior knowledge of the true crime it's based on. (Image: Getty Images ) Welsh actor Taron Egerton is said to have taken on a role in the new series Smoke without prior knowledge of the true crime it's based on. The Apple TV+ nine-part series draws from the 2021 podcast Firebug by Truth Media, which delves into the story of a serial arsonist who targeted businesses in Southern California during the '80s and '90s. In the series, Egerton plays Dave, an arson investigator who teams up with detective Michelle Calderone, played by Jurnee Smollett to apprehend two elusive serial arsonists he's been pursuing for months. Before filming began, the actor admitted to the Radio Times that he was unaware of the "disturbing" real events that inspired Dennis Lehane's series and hadn't listened to Firebug before he agreed to the role. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . The actor who grew up in Aberystwyth had said that he had found many aspects of the case not only disturbing but also perplexing due to the bizarre nature of the arsonist's actions. Taron saw it as a significant challenge to combine these peculiarities into a single, believable character. He shared: "I think that's really true of the show. It's a real juggle, sort of trying to figure out who Dave is and who the other characters in the show are as well, because no one is very easily squeezed into a box." Taron was enthused about the project right from the start, eager to work with his Blackbird showrunner Lehane again and delve into the complexities of what he described as a "fascinating" character marked by a flawed sense of heroism. Article continues below He explained to the Radio Times: "I was actually pretty sure I was gonna do it before I read the script because [Dennis and I] started talking about it when we were still shooting Blackbird "So it's been a long time in the works. But when he did finally send me the first couple of scripts, god, I was so excited." Taking on the role of Dave seemed like uncharted territory for the actor. He said: "It's a fascinating role, he's so unlike anything that I've ever been asked to play before, and actually, in a lot of ways, really unlike anything that I've seen on TV before. "He's not split personality, but he has somehow compartmentalised who he is in a way that's really strange, and if you have an insight into what's going on behind closed doors, it's really quite disturbing. "Dave is somebody who would style himself as a hero and as just a regular Joe who's trying to save the day. "On the surface of things, that doesn't seem that unnerving, but anyone in real life who would describe themself as a hero is probably someone I'd think was a little bit weird. And Dave is definitely more than a little bit weird." Taron hinted that as the series unfolds, Dave gains more insight into his identity and purpose, yet he cautioned that it's sometimes a disconcerting journey for the audience. If you are keen to watch the Hollywood star's new show, Smoke, you can sign up to Apple TV+ here for £8.99 per month. Article continues below
