Italian league set to begin on August 24, 2025

Minimal interruptions and year-end matches According to the league's statement, the season will only pause during the four designated FIFA international windows, scheduled for September, October, November, and March. As in previous seasons, Serie A will not observe a winter break, with fixtures already planned for December 21 and 28, 2025, as well as January 3 and 6, 2026. Midweek fixtures and scheduling adjustments The league also revealed that Matchdays 9 and 19 will be held midweek to accommodate the full 38-round schedule within the set timeframe. These midweek rounds are part of the league's strategy to ensure efficient scheduling despite a packed football calendar. City rivalries and stadium coordination In efforts to minimize security concerns, the league will alternate home and away matches for high-profile city rivalries such as Inter vs. Milan, Lazio vs. Roma, Juventus vs. Torino, and Fiorentina vs. Pisa. This measure is intended to prevent both clubs from hosting matches in the same city during the same round. San Siro exception due to Olympic preparations Despite these arrangements, exceptions will be made where necessary. One notable case involves Milan and Inter, whose shared home, San Siro Stadium, will be unavailable in early February due to preparations for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The stadium is set to host the Olympic opening ceremony on February 6, 2026, requiring special adjustments to the match calendar for both teams.

Dubai to fifth edition of Asian Youth Para Games in December

The countdown to the 5th Asian Youth Para Games has officially begun as the host city contract was signed between Asian Paralympic Committee and Dubai Club for People of Determination, the local organising committee for the event. Majid Al Usaimi, the APC President, and Thani Juma Berregad, Dubai Club for People of Determination Chairman, signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations, at the APC headquarters in Dubai. To be held under the patronage of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, the 5th Asian Youth Para Games will take place from December 7 to 14 in Dubai, UAE, featuring 11 sports. This is the second time Dubai will host the Games – it first hosted the Asian Youth Para Games in 2017. During the signing ceremony, Al Usaimi thanked Sheikh Mansoor for his commitment to the continuation of the Asian Youth Para Games, after the original host city Tashkent was unable to go ahead with staging games, originally scheduled for October. The APC President emphasised that this stance demonstrates the UAE and Dubai's commitment to supporting the People of Determination across all sectors. Al Usaimi also thanked the Dubai Club for People of Determination's initiative to host this important Asian event, noting that the club has taken numerous stances under difficult circumstances, demonstrating its full commitment to the development of the international Paralympic movement. He pointed out that the responsibility for continuing the Youth Games in the world's largest continent is one of the major objectives of the Asian Paralympic Movement. 'Our young athletes are among the most important investments on the Asian continent and globally. And we, at the Asian Paralympic Committee, seek to ensure the sustainability of our work to provide the best services for people of determination at the highest quality to achieve the organisation's goals.' "In this context, the Asian Paralympic Committee has raised the slogan to develop players from youth to professionals, charting a clear path to achieve this through various competitions throughout the season and training the cadres who work with the players, including classifiers and coaches." For his part, Berregad expressed his happiness at the Dubai Club for People of Determination hosting this important Games, indicating that they are up to the challenge of presenting an exceptional championship despite the short duration of the event. "Over the years, the UAE and Dubai have gained a prestigious status by hosting many major and successful regional and international sporting events. They continue to enhance this image, offering the world amazing experiences and leaving an exemplary impact on the Asian stage." "We are committed to delivering an exceptional edition by putting forth our utmost efforts to make the Games the strongest and best," he added.

FIFA's inaugural Club World Cup set to kick off in the US amid challenges

FIFA's billion-dollar gamble to revolutionise club football begins a week on Sunday with plenty of cash up for grabs but questionable enthusiasm as 32 teams prepare to contest the expanded Club World Cup in 12 stadiums across the US. The tournament - designed as a glittering showcase ahead of the 2026 World Cup - has had to contend with the prospect of empty seats along with controversial qualification rules and player welfare concerns after an exhausting European season. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami face Egypt's Al Ahly in the opening fixture on June 15 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, with tickets still widely available days before kickoff. A glance at FIFA's website shows lots of tickets available, including for the July 13 final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Messi's presence underscores the tournament's contentious foundations. Inter Miami gained entry by topping Major League Soccer's regular season standings, despite losing in the first round of the playoffs - a decision critics say shows FIFA's desperation to have the Argentina great at their inaugural showpiece. FIFA's decision to give the host nation a spot and award it to Inter Miami underlined the opaque nature of the qualifying criteria for the tournament, which won't feature Liverpool, Barcelona or Napoli who have all just been crowned champions of three of the most prestigious leagues in Europe. Apart from the winners of each confederation's premier club competitions, teams qualified according to a ranking based on their performances over a four-year period. Reuters
