MIRI (May 24): The Miri Gawai Dayak Bazaar (GDB) has become a cornerstone celebration for the Dayak community, promoting both cultural unity and economic empowerment, said Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of GDB 2025 in Permyjaya last night, Lee praised the event's transformation over the past 11 years into a platform that nurtures entrepreneurship while showcasing Dayak culture.
'This bazaar has not only provided a platform for Dayak entrepreneurs but has also become a symbol of unity and cultural pride for the entire community,' he said.
Lee commended organiser Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak (GADS) for their impactful programmes, particularly those focused on leadership development and entrepreneurship.
These, he said, are essential in grooming future leaders and equipping locals with business acumen.
Lee also emphasized how such initiatives were instrumental in driving socio-economic development while preserving the unique cultural identity of the Dayak community.
'The GDB has emerged as more than just a marketplace. It is an incubator for Dayak entrepreneurship, and a significant contributor to Miri's tourism sector,' he said.
He added that the inclusion of the bazaar in the Miri Mayfest 2025 calendar further solidifies its importance as a regional attraction that draws both local and international visitors.
Highlighting the role of the Gawai Dayak Bazaar in fostering social cohesion, Lee described it as a powerful unifying force, where people of all ethnicities and backgrounds come together to celebrate shared values and traditions.
He congratulated GADS and the participating traders for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the success of the bazaar.
'In my capacity, I will continue lend my voice and support to ensure the ongoing success of this important cultural event,' he assured.
Meanwhile, Lee encouraged GADS to aim even higher for GDB 2026 and provide opportunity for more members of the Dayak community to explore the business and trading industry.
At the function, he also announced a RM10,000 grant for GADS in support of GDB.
Held from May 1 to May 24, the Miri Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2025 attracted enthusiastic crowds and featured vibrant displays of traditional food, crafts, and cultural performances.
This year's edition hosted around 100 traders under 74 canopies, offering products ranging from food and beverages to handicrafts and locally made goods.
Also present at the closing were GADS chairman David Upe and GDB 2025 organising chairman Jimmy Lawie. cultural Dayak culture Gawai Dayak Bazaar lead Lee Kim Shin

Stronger brand strategy, governance and cross-sector collaboration the way forward for businesses

KUALA LUMPUR: Strengthening brand narratives, embracing ethical governance and forging collaborative networks were among the key strategies put forward at the National CEO Forum 2025 today as Malaysian businesses grapple with the pressures of an evolving global economy. According to Interbrand's 2024 report, brands worldwide have lost US$200 billion (RM939 billion then) in unrealised value over the past two years due to short-term thinking and weak brand focus. Malaysia, ranked 36th in the Global Soft Power Index 2025 with a score of 46.1, now faces the risk of slipping further if it fails to sharpen its competitive edge. CTOS Data Systems chief operating officer Lee Shin Mei said brand equity today can 'rise or fall faster than ever before', making structured, data-driven brand management more essential than ever. 'In Malaysia, we are a relationship-driven nation. We tend to trust people we know without checking. But proper governance and due diligence using data are critical to ensure we are working with the right partners and protecting our employees, stakeholders and customers,' she said. Lee cautioned that entering into collaborations without background checks can expose companies to reputational and financial risks. She recommended that businesses document a step-by-step brand narrative, set clear key performance indicators and include service-level guarantees in agreements. 'Without clarity and measurable commitments, expectations will inevitably fall short. But when everything is agreed upon and documented, both sides can move forward with confidence,' she added. Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office Dr Zulkifli Hasan said, 'From a dollars-and-cents perspective, the potential is massive. The Islamic banking sector alone is projected to grow from over US$4 trillion today to US$9.75 trillion by 2029. The halal industry, currently valued at US$2 trillion, is forecast to reach US$9.45 trillion by 2034,' he said. 'Islamic business is about serving both the market and the community. Mechanisms like zakat are not optional; they are integral to ensuring wealth is distributed fairly and society benefits,' he said. He emphasised that Islamic business principles are not exclusive to Muslims, but applicable to all Malaysians and international markets. KNKV Group chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zurainah Musa said, 'Collaboration is the new competition. Companies need each other to share resources and mitigate risk. Even banks collaborate with each other today because it makes it easier to access resources, share costs and achieve their objectives.' She pointed to Penang's rise as the 'Silicon Valley of the East' as a case study in collaborative growth. 'This didn't happen by chance. It happened because multinationals, SMEs and universities came together to share expertise, infrastructure and opportunities.' Muslim Insiders Business Chamber president Prof Adam Richman called on businesses regardless of size to join and actively participate in business communities. 'However big your brand is, it's not a reason to be arrogant. It's an opportunity to collaborate more,' he said. He noted that well-managed business communities allow companies to pool resources, combine supply and reduce operational burdens while increasing market reach. The forum also featured CTOS-led market intelligence briefings on Malaysian brand health, credit trends and consumer confidence outlook for 2026, as well as closed-door roundtables tackling sector-specific brand growth challenges. The forum themed 'Brand Growth and Focus 2026' and jointly organised by KNKV Group, CTOS Data Systems and the Muslim Insiders Business Chamber brought together 200 CEOs, leaders of government-linked companies and policymakers.

Update maritime laws, grasp liability limits to boost Sarawak shipping, says state transport minister

Lee (seated centre) in a photocall during the briefing session today. – Sarawak Transport Ministry's photo KUCHING (Aug 14): Shipowners and maritime stakeholders must understand both the legal framework and practical implications of liability limitations to drive the growth of Sarawak's shipping industry, said State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Speaking at the Sarawak Transport Ministry's Maritime Legal Briefing today, themed 'Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims: Practical Relevance to Sarawak', Lee stressed that maritime law must evolve to safeguard and advance the sector. 'Maritime law plays an evolving role in safeguarding and advancing the growth of Sarawak's shipping and maritime industries. 'We must ensure our laws are updated, aligned with international standards, and designed to facilitate rather than hinder industry development,' he said. The briefing was attended by representatives from government agencies, the shipping industry, the Sarawak State Attorney-General's Chambers, Sarawak Region 5 Marine Police Force, Sarawak Region Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Sarawak Rivers Board, Sarawak Maritime Department, Kuching Port Authority, Miri Port Authority, Bintulu Port Authority, Sarawak and Sabah Shipowner Association, Sarawak Shipping Association, and maritime legal practitioners, including Perlindungan dan Indemniti Malaysia Sdn Bhd CEO Rudy Andrew Jeyaraj. Also present were State Deputy Transport Minister (Riverine and Maritime) Dato Henry Harry Jinep, State Transport Ministry Head of Legal Division Marjanah Adenan, and the ministry's Riverine and Maritime Division officers Rudy Beltran Paris and Rahimee Dahlan. Maritime lawyer Dr Arun Kasi delivered the main presentation, sharing expertise on liability limitation laws. Lee noted Sarawak's jurisdiction under the Sarawak Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1960 and said a federal law revision committee, which includes ministry representatives, is reviewing and amending relevant legislation. 'This is the right time to contribute your feedback. Do not wait until the law is passed to raise concerns. 'Any provisions that require correction, enhancement, or inclusion to support industry growth should be identified now,' he said. He also emphasised full compliance with international maritime safety requirements, citing heightened global safety standards. The session concluded with expert discussions aimed at deepening understanding of maritime liability provisions and strengthening collaboration between government and industry.
