Wimbledon: Djokovic, Shelton, Sinner, Swiatek and 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva reach the quarterfinals

Hindustan Times6 days ago
LONDON — Right before Wimbledon began, Novak Djokovic declared it was the tournament that gave him the best chance to claim an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam singles trophy. Made sense, really, given that he's won seven titles there already and reached the past six finals. Wimbledon: Djokovic, Shelton, Sinner, Swiatek and 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva reach the quarterfinals
For one uncharacteristically unsteady set in the fourth round Monday, it sure didn't look as if that would happen this year. Djokovic, though, turned things around and avoided what would have been his earliest exit at the All England Club since 2016, coming through for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over 11th-seeded Alex de Minaur at Centre Court.
With eight-time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer sitting in the front row of the Royal Box, very little went right at the outset for the 38-year-old Djokovic on the grass below during a breezy afternoon with the temperature in the 60s Fahrenheit , a week after matches were contested in record-breaking heat.
'A lot of challenging moments for me,' Djokovic said right after the win, then later called it a 'big, big relief' not to get pushed to a fifth set.
He trailed 4-1 in the fourth — before taking the last five games and 14 of the final 15 points.
'Lifted his level,' de Minaur said, 'big-time.'
Djokovic's bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and 25th Grand Slam singles trophy overall will continue against No. 22 Flavio Cobolli of Italy. Cobolli reached his first major quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 , 7-6 victory over 2014 U.S. Open champion and two-time major runner-up Marin Cilic.
No. 10 Ben Shelton improved to 3-0 against Lorenzo Sonego at majors this year by beating him 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 , 7-5. Shelton's first Wimbledon quarterfinal will come against No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who moved on despite a painful right elbow and a two-set deficit when No. 19 Grigor Dimitrov quit because of an injured chest muscle.
Against de Minaur, Djokovic made mistake after mistake, double-faulting four times in the first set alone. Djokovic lost five of his first seven service games against de Minaur, a 26-year-old Australian who accumulated 19 break points in all.
Djokovic made 16 unforced errors in the first set alone.
All in all, Djokovic was discombobulated, chalking it up afterward to nerves and a swirling wind. He rushed between points. He reacted to flubbed shots by rolling his eyes or shouting and glaring in the direction of his guest box or putting his arms wide as if seeking explanations from someone, anyone.
At changeovers, he placed an ice-filled towel — usually wrapped around necks by players in steamy conditions — on his stomach, which he complained about during his first-round victory last week. But afterward, Djokovic dismissed the significance of that.
A loss would have been Djokovic's soonest at Wimbledon since he was eliminated in the third round by Sam Querrey nine years ago.
Since winning his men's-record 24th major title at the 2023 U.S. Open, Djokovic has come close to raising his total. He was the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon last year — the second consecutive time they met in the final, with the results the same — and departed each of the first two Slams of 2025 in the semifinals.
No man as old as Djokovic is now has won a major championship. He keeps showing why it's not preposterous to think he could.
'I didn't have many solutions, to be honest,' Djokovic said, 'but I just reset myself in the second.'
By the very end, it's almost as though de Minaur was resigned to defeat, knowing he's only the latest — and perhaps not the last — opponent to succumb to a surging Djokovic.
'I mean,' de Minaur summed up, 'he's been pretty good in big moments for a very long time.'
No. 7 Mirra Andreeva, an 18-year-old Russian, became the youngest player to reach the women's quarterfinals at Wimbledon since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007, beating No. 10 Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3. Andreeva next meets Belinda Bencic, who defeated No. 18 Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 , 6-4. Iga Swiatek, the five-time major champion who is seeded No. 8, was a 6-4, 6-1 winner against No. 23 Clara Tauson and will play No. 19 Liudmila Samsonova, who advanced to her first major quarterfinal with a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
The women's quarterfinals are No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. Laura Siegemund, and No. 13 Amanda Anisimova vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The men's quarterfinals are No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz vs. Cam Norrie, and No. 5 Taylor Fritz vs. No. 17 Karen Khachanov.

Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz, Wimbledon Final LIVE: Tennis' next-gen stars Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner set for high-stakes clash

Wimbledon Men's Final 2025 Live Updates: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have firmly taken the reins of men's tennis, winning seven of the last eight Grand Slam titles between them. Their rise has sparked comparisons with legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, and as they prepare to face off in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, it's clear the sport is witnessing a new era. Despite their meteoric success, both stars remain grounded. 'We are still really young,' Alcaraz remarked, acknowledging that their journey is just beginning. The two last met in a five-set thriller in the French Open final, where Alcaraz saved three championship points to win an epic contest. Yet he isn't taking anything for granted. 'He's going to be better physically, he's going to be better mentally,' Alcaraz said of Sinner. 'He's going to be prepared on Sunday to give his 100 percent.' They've faced off just once before on grass — at Wimbledon 2022 — with Sinner emerging victorious. However, both players have evolved since then. Taylor Fritz, who lost to both men recently, said Sinner is lethal from the baseline, but Alcaraz's variety makes him harder to predict. Sinner enters the final after a dominant semi-final win over Djokovic, though the Serb wasn't fully fit. Alcaraz's path was tougher, including a five-set test in the opening round, but his ability to rise when it matters remains unmatched. He has won all five Grand Slam finals he's played and is riding a 24-match win streak. Even Djokovic weighed in: 'I think I will give a slight edge to Carlos... but it's going to be a very close matchup like we had in Paris.' With history and pride on the line, Sunday's final promises a new classic in this defining rivalry. With history on the line, including a potential third straight Wimbledon crown for Alcaraz, Sunday promises a classic between tennis's two brightest stars.

Jannik Sinner's parents: Who are father Johann and mother Siglinde?

Jannik Sinner, currently ranked World No.1 in tennis, is the first Italian to achieve this feat. His journey to this point, however, has been anything but easy. Born on August 16, 2001, in Innichen, South Tyrol in Italy, Sinner has always credited his parents for his success. Jannik Sinner, Italy's first tennis World No.1, attributes his success to his supportive parents, Johann and Siglinde. REUTERS/Toby Melville(REUTERS) 'I wish that everyone could have my parents because they always let me choose whatever I wanted to. Even when I was younger, I also [played] some other sports and they never put pressure on [me] ... I wish that this freedom is possible for as many young kids as possible. Thank you so much [to] my parents,' he said after becoming the first Italian player to win a Grand Slam singles title in nearly five decades at the 2024 Australian Open. All about Wimbledon champion's assets, parents and boyfriend Meet Jannik's father, Johann Jannik's father, Johann, was born in the South Tyrol section of Italy and often goes by the name of Hanspeter, as per Town & Country magazine. Johann has been a professional chef for over 40 years now and worked at the Talschlusshutte Hut ski lodge in Sexten, Italy, during his son's early years. 'I used to go always to ski because I had ski training from 2 to 4,' Jannik told reporters after his 2024 Australian Open title win. 'When I came back around 4:30 my mom used to be at home, but I went to play tennis sometimes a little bit or football so I was not that much at home.' In a bid to spend more time with his son amid his hectic schedule, Johann has now joined Jannik's staff as a chef. 'My dad is here. We have a house here. We are all together,' Jannik told the Tennis Channel in 2023. 'My dad was a chef [for over] 40 years or more ... He knows how to cook and obviously it's very nice to have him around. He is here cooking for us, but it's not only about cooking. To have one [more] member of the family ... It's nice to have him here.' The family also runs a guest house called 'Haus Sinner' where Johann frequently goes to help out in the restaurant when on leave from touring with his son. The proud father can also frequently be spotted supporting Jannik at his matches. Also Read: What is double bagel? Iga Swiatek makes Wimbledon history vs Amanda Anisimova About Jannik's mother, Siglinde Jannik's mother, Siglinde, on the other hand, worked as a waitress alongside Johann in the same ski lodge to support her family. She, along with her husband, has always been quite supportive of their son's ambitions to pursue tennis professionally from a young age. 'I went away from home when I was 14 years old. So I had to grow up quite fast, trying to cook for myself, trying to make laundry. You know, the first time, it's different, but then in [another] way, that was maybe the fastest way to grow up,' Jannik revealed during a 2024 post-game conference. 'I think for me [it] was tough, but for [my] parents to leave their son [at] 14 years old, it's also not easy and they ... never put pressure on [me], which for me is maybe the key [of] why I'm here today.' Siglinde, however, revealed that she often gets anxious watching her son play in real life. 'I left at the end of the first set. I'll take a stroll around here and wait for the match to end. I never watch Jannik's entire matches live; it rarely happens. I prefer to stay in front of the TV,' she told Gazzetta following the Italian Open in Rome in May. Although always there to support him in spirit, Jannik's parents have stopped frequenting his matches recently to take care of his ailing grandparents. 'They won't travel much, at least [for] now. I know them, so I also have my grandma and grandpa, which they [are] a certain age now [so my parents] want to stay close,' Jannik said after winning the Miami Open in April. 'We have the family at home. They live in a beautiful place, so they have a good life there.' (By Stuti Gupta)
