Someone just died going overboard on the Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world
Summer and fall are popular times for cruising, and many travelers are currently planning their next getaway. Unfortunately, the cruise world was shocked by a terrible tragedy yesterday.
A crew member aboard the Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, has died after going overboard near San Salvador Island in the Bahamas on Thursday, according to Royal Caribbean, the ship's operator.
Crew member overboard on Icon of the Seas
The individual, whose identity has not been released, entered the water while the 1,200-foot-long vessel was sailing approximately 200 miles east of Nassau. It remains unclear how or why the crew member went overboard.
'Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately, the crew member passed away,' a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Fox Business. The ship was on a seven-night Eastern Caribbean voyage and is not expected to be delayed, the outlet reported.
Other deaths on cruise ships
This marks the second such incident aboard Icon of the Seas this year. In May 2024, a male passenger went overboard and was pulled back onto the ship, but later died despite efforts by onboard medical staff.
Similar headlines have emerged across the cruise industry in recent months. In June, a child went overboard on a Disney cruise ship. Her father jumped in after her, and both were rescued by the ship's crew and survived.
What is Icon of the Seas?
Icon of the Seas entered service in January 2024 and features 20 decks, 18 of which are open to guests. It can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members. The 250,000-ton ship offers more than 40 dining and entertainment venues, eight themed 'neighborhoods,' a massive water park, and multiple pools and performance spaces.
The ship was en route to Coco Cay—Royal Caribbean's private island resort in the Berry Islands—when the incident occurred. According to Cruise Hive, an overboard alarm was triggered around 7 p.m., prompting the immediate launch of rescue operations.
Royal Caribbean added, 'We extend our condolences to the crew member's family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.'

Oasis ‘shocked and saddened' as fan in his 40s dies in fall during Wembley Stadium gig
A man in his 40s has died after falling at Wembley Stadium during an Oasis concert on Saturday night. According to reports, he was understood to be sitting in the upper tier as Noel and Liam Gallagher performed to a sell-out crowd. In a statement the band said they were 'shocked and saddened' to hear of the death of a fan. They added: 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' The Metropolitan Police said officers on duty at the venue responded to reports of an injured person at around 10.20pm, alongside medics and the London Ambulance Service. One eyewitness told the Daily Mail: 'It was horrendous. The guy fell from a balcony. Paramedics came rushing over. There was a lot of screaming and shouting. 'It was a big fall. God knows how it happened. It was so tragic. I don't know how on earth it happened. 'It was heartbreaking. He was only young.' One fan, who was sitting in a lower tier in the 90,000-seat venue, described watching medics try to revive the tragic fan after he hit the ground. She wrote: 'I was directly underneath in section 211. At first glance I thought it was a coat falling from the above tier but then I looked and saw the bloke on the concrete. It was horrific to see.' Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys had been at Wembley on Saturday. He caused a social media storm after blaming the death on a 'massive amount of alcohol allowed into the arena'. He alleged on X, formerly Twitter: 'I heard about this last night. It's so sad. Thoughts are with the family. 'The cause was the massive amount of alcohol allowed into the arena. 'I was astounded to see it. It wouldn't happen at a football match. It shouldn't happen at a concert.' Scotland Yard said: 'At around 10.19pm Saturday, August 2, officers on duty at Wembley Stadium for the Oasis concert responded alongside venue medics and the London Ambulance Service to reports that a person had been injured. 'A man - aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. 'The stadium was busy, and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage.' The fall happened during the latest in a run of stadium shows for the band's sell-out Live '25 reunion tour – their first since splitting in 2009. Wembley Stadium said their concert on Sunday night will still be going ahead. A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium said: 'Last night, Wembley Stadium medics, the London Ambulance Service and the police attended to a concert-goer who was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. 'Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers. The police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them. 'Tonight's Oasis concert will go ahead as planned.' Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting 7985/02AUG.

Celebrity Cruises ship drifts off coast of Italy during power outage
Passengers aboard the Celebrity Cruises' Constellation experienced a few hours of neither air conditioning nor electricity during a brief power outage. A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Group, the line's parent company, confirmed the 2,170-passenger ship lost power for under three hours on Saturday, Aug. 2, as the team "addressed a technical issue" in an email to USA TODAY. The cruise line did not provide details on what sort of issue or repair was required. It's not uncommon for cruise ships to lose power, with most having emergency generators independent of the ship's main source of power as a backup plan. Situated on the upper decks, they can provide power for emergency lighting, elevators, radios and fire detection systems, and even re-start engines if necessary, according to Royal Caribbean's website. The ship was sailing to Messina, Sicily from Kotor, Montenegro and was right off the coast of Italy when the incident occurred, leaving it to drift for a short period of time, according to CruiseMapper. Satellite tracking data at the time showed the ship's speed briefly dropped down to as low as 1.1 mph, as reported by Cruise Hive. The cruise line said the ship was close enough to the coast to still be within range of cell phone service. "We've been communicating with our guests directly," the spokesperson added. Part of Celebrity's more upscale Millennium class, the Constellation is currently sailing an 11-day, one-way cruise departing from Ravenna, Italy on July 28. It is scheduled to visit Naples and Livorno before ending in Civitavecchia-Rome on Aug. 8.
