July 2025 was one of the safest summer months on record in New York City
Across the five boroughs, shootings hit all-time lows for the month, with just 75 incidents and 92 victims, per a recently released report. That's down from the previous record in July 2017, when 79 incidents and 102 victims were recorded. And it wasn't just July: The first seven months of 2025 also saw the lowest number of shootings (412) and shooting victims (489) since the NYPD began tracking the category in the 1990s.
Even the notoriously tricky Fourth of July weekend, a time police say can spike gun violence, saw the lowest shooting totals ever recorded for the holiday—and tied the all-time low for the day itself.
Overall, major crime fell 5.6-percent in July compared to last year, marking the 10th straight month of declines. Murders dropped nearly in half (25 vs. 49), burglaries were down 14.2-percent, robberies dipped 7.5-percent and felony assaults fell 8.1-percent. In the subway, July crime was the lowest on record, excluding the pandemic's ridership-starved summers of 2020–2021.
Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch credit the gains to 'precision policing' and the city's Summer Violence Reduction Plan. Since May, the NYPD has deployed more than 2,000 uniformed officers to 72 'summer zones' in precincts, public housing and transit hubs, focusing on high-priority crime hot spots. The payoff: Major crime in those zones is down over 20-percent during deployment hours, with shootings cut in half.
Guns remain a big part of the NYPD's focus: More than 3,000 illegal firearms have been seized this year and more than 22,900 since Adams took office. Gang takedowns are also up, with 48 major busts so far in 2025 leading to 347 arrests and 236 guns recovered.
Not every number trended downward. Reported rapes rose 33-percent year-over-year in July, an increase officials link to changes in state law last fall that broadened the definition of rape to include more forms of sexual assault.
Still, city officials are quick to point out the larger trajectory. 'This is the safest big city in America,' Adams said, noting that while high-profile incidents like last week's Midtown mass shooting grab headlines, they happen against a backdrop of historically low crime rates.

Security footage from the Barclays Center showed the man - who has tattoos up and down his arms - wearing a red and black hat as he walked through the arena. Unlike in other incidents that have plagued the league, the sex toy did not make it onto the court and officials were reportedly able to dispose of the item swiftly. The incident was one of two sex toy-throwing acts that occurred on Tuesday night, with the Indiana Fever's game against the Los Angeles Sparks also interrupted. Fever star Sophie Cunningham - who had previously spoken out against the trend - was struck by the item after it was hurled on court from the stands. Meanwhile, two individuals - including an 18-year-old - have been arrested over the indecent acts in the last week. Kaden Lopez, 18, was booked into jail on suspicion of disorderly conduct, assault and public display of explicit sexual material following the game between the Mercury and Sun, Fox 10 Phoenix has reported. While the toy did not reach the court, it allegedly hit an adult male victim who was attending the game with his nine-year-old niece, according to a court document. The moment of Lopez throwing the object, described as a 'green dildo', was captured on video, and the teen was tackled by an arena volunteer before being detained by police. Lopez allegedly apologized for the act, saying it was 'stupid prank that was trending on social media.' It is also alleged in court documents that he bought the toy on Monday - just one day before the game. Days prior to that, Delbert Carver, 23, was arrested for allegedly throwing sex toys onto the floor of two WNBA games last week He was released from Clayton County Jail in Jonesboro on Sunday, one day after being charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass, according to online records. Police say he was arrested after throwing a sex toy onto the court during the Atlanta Dream's win over the visiting Phoenix Mercury on Friday. He also allegedly confessed to police that he was involved in a similar incident in Atlanta's July 29 loss to the visiting Golden State Valkyries. Carver's next court date has not been announced and he has no listed attorney on the Clayton County government website. Meanwhile, a group of cryptocurrency traders have claimed responsibility for the wave of sexual pranks plaguing WNBA games. What's more, they say they're doing it to promote their new meme coin. A spokesman for the cryptocurrency enthusiasts, told USA Today the group is responsible for the pranks and currently has more planned for the future. Furthermore, @Daldo_Rain said they've launched their own cryptocurrency, Green Dildo Coin (DILDO), which is a nod to the sex toys that have been thrown at WNBA players in the last two weeks. USA Today obtained text messages showing the group's coordinating efforts before the coin's July 28 launch. The first sex toy was thrown onto the court during an Atlanta Dream-Golden State Valkyries game the following day.

Montrell Williams, 2, vanished on Mother's Day after a custody visit with his 20‑year‑old father Arius WIlliams, and his body was later discovered in the East River nearly a month after his disappearance on June 11. Now, Williams' mother, 17‑year‑old Cierra Carroll, is suing the city for $60 million, alleging the NYPD failed to investigate the toddler's disappearance, a lawsuit claims. Carroll claims she repeatedly alerted police that her son had not been returned but was met with no support, and grew emotional as she detailed her ordeal at a Friday press conference outside the NYPD's 40th Precinct. 'They told me not to follow him and to go to the police to file a complaint,' Carroll said. 'I told the police that he had a warrant, they said, "So what?"' 'And hung up the phone,' Carroll's mother, Octavia Roane, added. Court records say Montrell's father was captured on surveillance video walking with his young son before allegedly tossing him from the Bruckner Expressway overpass in The Bronx. Arius Williams now faces charges including second‑degree murder and manslaughter, and remains held without bail. Officials confirmed that the father's initial statements raised red flags about the child's safety. Following initial questioning at a police precinct, the father appeared in Bronx Family Court to answer a warrant for failing to return Montrell in accordance with the custody agreement, according to ABC7. When he refused to disclose the boy's location to the judge, he was taken into custody. Detectives have reason to believe the father threw Montrell into the Bronx River, near the Bruckner Expressway.
