Nissan Just Issued a Major Recall for Its Funky Variable-Compression Engine
a NHTSA investigation
, and now, a massive recall.
CarBuzz
brought our attention to the recall
, which covers 443,899 Nissan and Infiniti models listed below:
2019-2022 Infiniti QX50
2022 Infiniti QX55
2021-2024 Nissan Rouge
2019-2020 Nissan Altima
The two Infiniti models and certain trims of the Altima use Nissan's 2.0-liter four-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, while the Rouge uses the 1.5-liter three-cylinder variant.
As we've reported before
, the problem stems from bearing failures due to a manufacturing defect in the "multi-link mechanism" that varies the compression ratio. Nissan has introduced manufacturing updates over the life of the engine, which seems to have helped, if not solved the problem entirely, hence why newer Infiniti models and Altimas, plus the new Murano, aren't covered in the recall. But, it's still a huge amount of engines.
More on the VC-Turbo
Nissan's Variable-Compression Engine Is a Disappointment
2023 Nissan Altima SR Review: Variable Compression, Variable Results
Per the NHTSA filing
, the recall procedure is straightforward, but it could prove painful for a struggling Nissan. Dealers will inspect the oil pans of affected cars for metal shavings. If no metal debris is present, they'll replace the engine oil in the four-cylinder cars, and the oil and pan in three-cylinder cars. Three-cylinder models will also get a software update. But if there is metal present in either VC-Turbo engine, dealers will replace the engine entirely if deemed necessary.
Nissan said in a previous NHTSA filing
that the incidence rate of bearing failures in VC-Turbo engines is extremely low, well under 1%. But if there is a problem, it could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Nissan could end up replacing thousands of engines. A potentially expensive endeavor for
a company that's aiming for $3.4 billion in cost cuts over the next two years
.
The irony is that the VC-Turbo engine never quite delivered on its promise of huge performance and fuel economy improvements. Nissan spent decades working on this engine, finally doing what many others never managed to pull off, but variable compression didn't become a must-have piece of tech. Now, it's behind the curve on hybrids and EVs, playing catch-up in a changing world with a variable-compression albatross hanging off its neck.
Nissan will send the recall notice to customers on August 25, 2025.

People Who Went To Private School Are Sharing The Best "Rich Kid Meltdowns" They've Ever Witnessed, And I'm Cackling
Recently, a post from Reddit user Katybee18 on the popular Ask Reddit page caught my eye: In it, they asked, "People who went to private school, what was the best rich kid meltdown you've ever witnessed?" and the responses were pretty entertaining. Here are some of the best: 1."One kid had a meltdown because he was moving into a new house that didn't have a sauna." The Weinstein Company —u/zatchrey 2."When I was in high school, someone arranged for THOUSANDS of rose petals to be laid out on the school lawn spelling this girl's name to ask her to prom. This was while a plane flew overhead, towing one of those banners asking the question." Fhm / Getty Images, John Corry / Getty Images "He got rejected and freaked the fuck out. Parents were beefing with one another, and people were telling the girl to just go with him since his family spent so much money. He was clowned on relentlessly. It was pretty hilarious." —u/madhero3333 "Mad props to the girl in question for not bowing to the pressure." —u/DoglessDyslexic 3."One kid had a meltdown because his grandma was hospitalized and he couldn't spend his holidays in his other house on Reunion Island. He went there every holiday." —u/WiswisBrebis 4."I grew up in the late '90s, around the time the original Humvees became super popular. When I was 16, one of my classmates got a brand new one for his birthday. While showing off one Saturday afternoon, he drove it into a marsh. The marsh turned out to be deeper than he thought, and he had to bail out the driver's side window while it slowly sank into about seven feet of muck. I heard later that cleaning and restoring it would've cost more than the vehicle was worth, so it was written off." "Upon returning to school, he got some well-deserved ribbing from his friends, threw a tantrum, and stormed out of the lunchroom. There wasn't much schadenfreude to enjoy, though. A week later, the little shit rolls up in a brand new Viper." —u/veryloudnoises 5."This one girl would always show off the new things her parents got her, then pick and choose who to share it with, like it was a privilege. This one time, they got her these heart-shaped pastel-colored chocolates. She waited until someone noticed them so she could tell the table about it, and then she took a bite. She immediately went to the bathroom and came back crying. It was soap." —u/mvytsm 6."A senior once got wasted and somehow ended up driving his car through a wall into the dining hall." "Parents stormed into the school the next day with a lawyer and tried spinning the story that the 'school's parking lot had too many turns on the roads,' which is how his car ended up in the lunch line. Somehow, this worked, the entire parking lot was rebuilt, and the family 'donated' a new dining hall that now has their name on it." —u/peywrax 7."Had a golden child and a scapegoat in the same private school, two years apart. The parents gave the golden child everything and the scapegoat only got shabby hand-me-downs, including school supplies. Well, the golden child freaked the fuck out and BIT a teacher because he gave her an A minus instead of an A on an essay. This was eighth grade. Once she calmed down, she looked at her sister and said, 'You don't understand. If I'm not perfect for them, they're going to treat me like they already treat you.'" Pop TV / CBC Television —u/CandlestickMaker28 8."My daughter was in first grade, and this affluent child had a complete meltdown because they were going to take a motorcoach bus to a museum three hours away. She screamed over and over that 'only trashy poor people ride buses.' Her parents, of course, drove her." ABC —u/BobsleddingToMyGrave 9."She only got a Toyota and not a Tesla for her quinceañera." —u/Ctrl_Alt_Yolo 10."A rich kid I grew up with backed his Porsche onto a Honda Civic, and just walked away from it. He was just being a POS. Not even kidding, a week later he had a new Porsche. His dad has a garage full of them." —u/PegCity-Handshake 11."I got a scholarship to a private high school. A kid from a famous car racing family told me — voluntarily, suggesting she had no idea that she was being ridiculous — that she had screamed at her parents and told them they obviously didn't love her because they bought her a drum kit for her birthday that was 'only £4,999 — not even £5,000.' She was 13 or 14. I think I was supposed to sympathize with her." CBS / Via —u/boroxine 12."I went to a private boarding school in Massachusetts. There were lots of rich kids. I was there on financial aid. For some reason, the rich kids were really hung up on the idea that they were poor." Sony Pictures Releasing "A group of boys was discussing whose family was the least rich. The conversation went like this: 'Well, my family only really owns two houses, our ski lodge is technically a condo.' 'Well, we have the apartment in Manhattan, the loft in Brooklyn, and then a beach house in that's like only one house.'" —u/mister_immortal 13."My wife and kids witnessed this one. We were living in Switzerland on an expat assignment, and my kids got to attend a very exclusive boarding school as day students. There were some very wealthy families there, and the after-school pickup time was like a fancy car show." "One day my wife was waiting by our Opel Zafira van with two of our kids while waiting for the others. One of the extremely spoiled kids walked by and exclaimed, 'Not the Porsche again!' when he saw what the family driver had brought to pick him up in. It was a great example for my kids. They couldn't believe it." —u/Exidor 14."There was a little girl who could not let anyone have something more interesting than she did, and she would always borrow (without asking) any items that were pink. One time, we were on the bus, and she had taken a pink spray from a teacher out of her purse. She sprayed it on her neck, thinking it was perfume; it was, in fact, pepper spray. She screamed for the entire 20 minutes to her stop, her mom flipped out and screamed, 'Someone injured my princess.' They tried to get the amazing teacher fired, but it didn't work." —u/OilSafe6112 15."Kid got caught cheating and went to lawyer daddy to plead their case that they were just being efficient and 'using their resources.' It halfway worked: they weren't kicked out, but did have to take a zero. Incidentally, the school received a nice donation at auction from the family…" —u/Briaboo2008 16."I went to the international high school; it was weird. My family was broke, but my tuition was covered by my dad's work. It was the only US-accredited high school in the country, so we poor kids walked the halls with people who were driven to school in Bentleys. One rich douche got in a fight with another kid and got his ass beat in front of everyone. I'll never forget him on the ground screaming, 'Just wait! My bodyguard is gonna kick your ass!'" —u/Own_Candidate9553 17."Two of the kids at my school got into a fight over a parking spot, and one somehow drove his super-lifted truck OVER THE HOOD of the other kid's sports car. Fortunately, both of their parents bought them new vehicles, so nobody learned any lessons." —u/xiphias__gladius 18."I knew a girl who, by age 16, had totaled two brand-new cars." Adrianhancu / Getty Images, Trygve Finkelsen / Getty Images "When her parents refused to buy her a new one and told her to get a job if she wanted a car, she threw a massive fit and complained about how dare they make her walk to school. I remember just staring at her and laughing as she complained. It made her so mad, but I thought it was hilarious." —u/CaptainFartHole 19."One kid from Spain had a meltdown because there were shared showers in the dorms. His family paid to have a bathroom installed in his room." —u/Fine-Philosophy8939 20."This kid was told by his parents that if he hit an over-the-fence homerun, they would buy him a new Jeep. He hits what looks to be a homer, and the outfielder throws his glove up in the air in left field and actually hits the ball. It was hilarious, and the kid crashed out. They still bought him the Jeep, though." —u/regionaljames 21."A girl in my friend circle absolutely lost it when her parents wouldn't let her decorate her dorm room with a signed, original Warhol for senior year." —u/moose_nd_squirrel 22."One guy got expelled from boarding school for stealing money. He stole someone's card to spend like £400 on some new shoes and whatnot. So his dad came and picked him up, landing a helicopter in the sports field to take him away. That flight would've cost so much more than what the kid stole." —u/goldlord44 23."One girl used her Macbook as an umbrella when it rained." Comedy Central / Via —u/meh817 24."One kid nearly got expelled for dealing weed. Then the school got a new state-of-the-art recording studio, named after him." —u/listenspace Do you have any rich kid meltdown stories to share? Drop them in the comments, I'm so curious! Is There Such a Thing as an 'Indestructible' Wheel? Tesla Owners Can Find Out
New wheels from the aftermarket company Unplugged Performance, which caters to owners, are claimed to be indestructible. The claim is a bit far-fetched, but the Road Warrior wheels appear to be tough and well-designed. Priced between $2795 and $2995, they're also relatively light and don't add much to aerodynamic drag. If you want to market your product to Tesla owners, you're going to need to make a claim that stands out. Thus, aftermarket outfit Unplugged Performance doesn't just say that its latest set of forged alloy wheels for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are tough—it's claiming the wheels are literally indestructible. This claim is backed up by the company's guarantee of free replacement for life if a wheel should be bent or cracked. Think of Darn Tough, the Vermont manufacturer of heavy-duty socks. Those socks, made in the United States, are guaranteed for life, warranted for replacement should they wear out. On one hand, you're buying a corporate promise, but they really are decent socks. These wheels also look to be a solid product. At $2795 for a set of 19-inch wheels and $2995 for 20s, the Road Warrior wheels are reasonably priced for forged aluminum. Load rated at over 2000 pounds per wheel, they're theoretically stronger than many wheels used in actual rally racing, and those cars are expected to survive jumps, not just potholes. Also, at a claimed 23.5 pounds per wheel for the 19-inch application and 26.0 pounds for the 20s, they aren't adding a bunch of unsprung weight. Perhaps more important for an EV application, the increased aerodynamic drag is claimed to be minimal, with Unplugged Performance claiming that the coefficient of drag with its wheels is within roughly 4 percent of the most slippery 18-inch factory wheels. The Road Warrior wheels also fit Tesla's factory tire sizes and come with a built-in, replaceable curb protector. The marketing release for the Road Warrior wheels comes with a bunch of copy about how these "indestructible" wheels will be ideal for ride-share drivers and owners of fleets of robotaxis, with wheels that will never have to be replaced. While it all sounds pretty hyperbolic, the company has designed these wheels based on learnings from the beatings its wheels have taken on municipal Tesla police fleets. These wheels do look tough, well-designed, reasonably priced, and light enough to be a decent upgrade for a privately owned Tesla. The built-in curb rash protectors are a lot less garish than the plastic aftermarket offerings more commonly available, although at $80 for a replacement set of two, you're going to want to pay some attention while parking. Which you should be doing anyway. Making bold claims and not following up on them is, unfortunately, a winning corporate strategy in 2025. Slightly exaggerating but putting out a solid product? By comparison, entirely forgivable. You Might Also Like Car and Driver's 10 Best Cars through the Decades How to Buy or Lease a New Car Lightning Lap Legends: Chevrolet Camaro vs. Ford Mustang!

Driver killed, passenger hurt after crashing into moose near Denali National Park
A 24-year-old man was killed and a woman was injured after their vehicle hit a moose near the entrance to Alaska's Denali National Park and Reserve, officials said. The crash happened around 1 a.m. Friday, just south of the entrance to the Denali Park Road near Mile 235 of the George Parks Highway, also referred to as the Parks Highway, the park said in a statement. Officials said the driver, who was from Bulgaria, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 24-year-old female passenger, who is from North Macedonia, was taken to a hospital in Fairbanks. The National Park Service is investigating the incident and working with the Bulgarian Embassy to notify the driver's family. "The collision serves as a sobering reminder of the hazards of wildlife along Alaska's roadways," the park said. "Moose, caribou, and other large animals are often active at dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours, and can be difficult to see." The park urged drivers to slow down in dark conditions and use high-beam headlights. The condition of the animal was not immediately clear. Denali is 6 million acres of wild land bisected by a single ribbon of road. It is home to North America's tallest peak, Mount McKinley, which had its name changed back from Denali in January in response to an executive order signed by President Trump after he took office.
