Title holders Senegal host Guinea in key CHAN warm-up matches
Published: Wednesday, 25 June 2025
Senegal will face Guinea in back-to-back friendlies in July as both nations intensify their preparations for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August in East Africa.
The reigning champions Senegal, under new leadership but with the same ambition, have opened camp at the Jules François Bocandé Technical Centre, while Guinea's home-based squad will be setting up temporarily in Dakar after receiving approval to conduct part of their CHAN build-up in Senegal.
The two West African rivals will play each other twice – on 4 and 7 July – at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio, a venue that hosted key moments during Senegal's continental successes in recent years.
For Guinea, the decision to base part of their training camp in a neighbouring rival's territory signals a bold strategy: proximity, competition, and the chance to test themselves against the best.
It also offers a psychological edge, given that Senegal were responsible for eliminating Guinea during the last CHAN qualification series.
With the domestic season wrapped up in Conakry, Guinea's technical team will now have a full complement of local players available to face the title holders.
Senegal who won their maiden CHAN crown in 2023 after a dramatic win over hosts Algeria, have begun shaping a squad capable of defending their title.
The stakes are high for Senegal. Drawn in a tough Group D alongside Nigeria, Sudan, and Congo, the Lions B' will use the friendlies to gauge their readiness and build cohesion.
For Guinea's Syli B', grouped with hosts Uganda, Niger, Algeria and South Africain Group C, this two-match series represents a litmus test ahead of their travel to East Africa for the main event.
These friendlies are not just warm-up fixtures — they are symbolic of the pride, pressure, and potential of African football's locally-driven competition.
As both teams continue fine-tuning, the matches in Dakar could reveal which side is more prepared to go the distance when CHAN 2024 kicks off.

'Job done': Sundowns coach proud despite Club World Cup exit
"Some teams came here and took nothing but Mamelodi Sundowns leave with a lot -– we took four points, we lost just one game and we drew one game in which it was clear we had the best chances," Cardoso said after the 0-0 draw with Fluminense in Miami. That followed a 1-0 win against Ulsan HD of South Korea and a 4-3 loss to German giants Borussia Dortmund, as the South African champions finished third in Group F. Their tally of four points was one fewer than Fluminense, and three behind group winners Dortmund. "For those who don't know international football so well, I invite them to go and study Fluminense, Dortmund and Ulsan a little, and understand the level Sundowns played at during this Club World Cup," Cardoso added. "When we go out but set such a huge platform, you don't go through but you take a lot, you take prestige, you value your players, you make your club even more well known in the world." He added: "I know we have a strange name but we have a strong capacity. We have been showing good things for many years and now everyone in the world will talk about Mamelodi Sundowns because people like positive emotions." "People like going home having seen an exciting game and we gave amazing emotons to people who like football. "We are not happy, we had a clear objective for this match, but I am very proud of the level my players performed at. "We leave and go home with our heads up because we are much stronger than we were when we came here." Perennial South African champions Sundowns qualified for FIFA's lucrative new tournament on the back of their record over the last four years in African competitions. However, they travelled to the United States reeling after losing to Pyramids of Egypt in the final of the CAF Champions League. Cardoso, though, sees the positives as his club romped to their eighth domestic title in a row and appeared in a first African Champions League final since winning it in 2016. "In the eight months I have been here it has been amazing. We won the championship in South African beating all the records," he said. "We didn't win the final of the Champions League but after (nine) years we were back in the final." He added: "We knew these competitions are very risky because you can do beautiful things and leave with nothing because the other teams are very strong. "We competed until the last minute. It is always possible to do more. But will we sleep in peace tonight? Believe me we will. Job done, recognition obtained." Ahly striker Abou Ali proud of Club World Cup campaign
The Palestinian international impressed in the inaugural edition of the expanded competition, despite Ahly's early exit. He scored a hat-trick in a dramatic 4-4 draw with Portugal's FC Porto on Tuesday and was named man of the match. 'It was a tournament full of lessons, with both highs and lows,' Abou Ali wrote on Instagram. 'Without a doubt, I will look back on it with pride as time goes on.' The 26-year-old's future at the Cairo club remains uncertain, with media reporting he could leave during the summer transfer window.
