McCarthy rings changes as Kenya fine-tunes CHAN 2024 squad ahead of DR Congo opener
Published: Monday, 28 July 2025 Kenya head coach Bennie McCarthy has made late adjustments to his Harambee Stars squad just days before the country kicks off its maiden campaign at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. With concerns over player fitness and a desire to bolster depth in key areas, McCarthy has called up defensive midfielder Chris Erambo of Tusker FC, forward Brian Michira from Shabana FC, and reinstated Edward Omondi of Sofapaka FC, who was part of the earlier provisional squad. The changes come as attacking midfielder and fan favourite Mohamed Bejaber remains a major doubt for the tournament due to a thigh injury. Fellow players Brian Musa and Marvin Nabwire are also nursing knocks, casting doubt over their availability for the opening fixture. Kenya, making its first-ever appearance in the CHAN tournament, will face a stern test in their Group A opener against DR Congo this Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. DR Congo, two-time CHAN champions, will pose a formidable challenge for the hosts. Despite the injury concerns, spirits remain high in the Harambee Stars camp, buoyed by strong fan interest. Tickets for the opening fixture are already selling out fast, reflecting Kenya's renewed passion for international football. Remarkably, this will be only Kenya's second international match in four years, following a lengthy suspension from international football. Their return in March, when they hosted Gabon in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd at Nyayo, underlining the appetite for top-tier football in the country. As co-hosts of CHAN 2024, alongside East African neighbours Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya qualified automatically for the tournament. The team will be eager to make a strong impression on home soil, with coach McCarthy tasked with not only shaping a competitive squad but also reigniting the pride of a nation in transition. With group fixtures against Angola, Morocco, and DR Congo, the Harambee Stars face a steep mountain—but one they're determined to climb with courage, discipline, and the roar of the home crowd behind them.

Led by inspirational captain Allan Okello, the Cranes' selection reflects a strategic balance of youth and experience drawn exclusively from the domestic league – a requirement for CHAN eligibility. With co-hosting responsibilities shared between Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, the Cranes are determined to make their mark in front of home fans. Okello, one of Uganda's most technically gifted midfielders, will shoulder the leadership role, supported by key talents such as Yunus Sentamu, Enock Ssebagala, and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza. Countdown to CHAN 2024: can South Africa surprise everyone?
Image: Supplied Also known as CHAN 2024, we are just days away from the beginning of one of Africa's most interesting international football competitions. The biennial tournament should have occurred in February 2025, but CAF postponed it for August 2-30, 2025. Even though the tournament will be held in 2025, it is often referred to as the 2024 African Nations Championship. This is because it was originally scheduled for 2024, but due to logistical and unstructured issues, the organizers postponed it to 2025. The event has much to offer, and football fans worldwide can expect many intriguing clashes, especially around South Africa. The team's in an interesting position and can surprise everyone, but before we see what happens, let's learn more about the upcoming event. What is the African Nations Championship and what happened in the last event The African Nations Championship is a biennial tournament organised by CAF (Confederation of African Football). It's an international tournament in Africa, but unlike the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), for example, this one has an interesting twist - it only features players playing in their country's respective leagues. In other words, the tournament does not feature footballers playing abroad. Although some may find this condition disappointing, it is what sets CHAN apart from any other football tournament. Since teams can't use all of their players, fans can see many new names in action. The first-ever CHAN was in 2009, and it only included 8 teams. Following the initial success, CAF increased the teams to 16, and for the current event, we will have a total of 19 teams. Football fans who followed the last African Nations Championship remember that it occurred between January and February 2023. It included 17 teams, and after a fierce battle, Senegal clinched their first CHAN title. The team defeated Algeria (the host at the time) on penalties. Video Player is loading.
