Countdown to CHAN 2024: can South Africa surprise everyone?

Also known as CHAN 2024, we are just days away from the beginning of one of Africa's most interesting international football competitions. The biennial tournament should have occurred in February 2025, but CAF postponed it for August 2-30, 2025.
Even though the tournament will be held in 2025, it is often referred to as the 2024 African Nations Championship. This is because it was originally scheduled for 2024, but due to logistical and unstructured issues, the organizers postponed it to 2025.
The event has much to offer, and football fans worldwide can expect many intriguing clashes, especially around South Africa. The team's in an interesting position and can surprise everyone, but before we see what happens, let's learn more about the upcoming event.
What is the African Nations Championship and what happened in the last event
The African Nations Championship is a biennial tournament organised by CAF (Confederation of African Football). It's an international tournament in Africa, but unlike the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), for example, this one has an interesting twist - it only features players playing in their country's respective leagues. In other words, the tournament does not feature footballers playing abroad.
Although some may find this condition disappointing, it is what sets CHAN apart from any other football tournament. Since teams can't use all of their players, fans can see many new names in action.
The first-ever CHAN was in 2009, and it only included 8 teams. Following the initial success, CAF increased the teams to 16, and for the current event, we will have a total of 19 teams.
Football fans who followed the last African Nations Championship remember that it occurred between January and February 2023. It included 17 teams, and after a fierce battle, Senegal clinched their first CHAN title. The team defeated Algeria (the host at the time) on penalties.

Maema embracing Bafana Bafana challenge ahead of CHAN return

MAMELODI Sundowns Neo Maema set to lead Bafana Bafana in Chan. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema is hoping the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will offer Bafana Bafana a chance to break new ground after more than a decade of absence from the continental tournament. Maema, who captained South Africa during a number of crucial CHAN qualifiers earlier this year, is expected to retain a central role in the squad for the tournament finals. Notably, he remains one of the few players in the current team still under contract with a Premier Soccer League club. The midfielder's standout displays during the CHAN qualifiers helped him win back the confidence of Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, whose midfield options are among the strongest in the league. His timely return to form saw him earn more minutes at club level. Despite being linked with a move away from Chloorkop in recent weeks, no deal has been finalised, and Maema now appears set to use the CHAN platform to ensure a smooth transition back into the rhythm of competitive football. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Speaking after Bafana's 1–1 draw with Angola at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday, the 29-year-old midfielder expressed his pride in representing his country and looked ahead with optimism. 'It is an opportunity and an honor to represent the country,' Maema said. 'It's a proud moment and a massive achievement for us to get to this position, and it's a tournament we haven't participated on in such a long time, and the only thing that will matter is us making sure we put the national team in a good position to be ready for the tournament. 'This will be a huge one because it has been 12 years since we last represented the country at such a competition and we should be excited as a group of players. 'As an individual I am happy to lead the team in such a big competition, we are honored and privileged to be in this position.' Maema will be joined in the squad by teammates Malibongwe Khoza and Terrence Mashego, and believes that their shared club experience could provide the team with an added advantage in terms of chemistry and understanding. 'It does help,' Maema continued. 'The only thing I can say about the players that are familiar to me is that, they have the winning mentality to help the other guys, but we are professionals and we know what to do and we know what is at stake. 'It's just about helping the technical team so that they can also help us to form a team that will be able to compete at such a big tournament.' Given the timing of the tournament—immediately following the pre-season window—many players in the CHAN squad arrived without clubs, meaning they may lack full fitness. Maema believes that unity and collective effort will be vital in building momentum before the first game. 'We just need a bit of time, we have a week left before we start our first game,' he continued. 'We will just go back to the drawing board, today we played a draw, we will help each other. Most of us we are not match fit, we can just help each other to train and push each other to make sure that in every department we (are ready to) help each other. 'It is very difficult not to have a pre-season and go into a tournament that is going to demand so much from us, we should just maintain spirits of brotherhood and ensure we are together in this.'

WATCH: Stellenbosch FC ready to 'carry Cape football' as new season gets underway against AmaZulu

Stellenbosch FC will face AmaZulu in the MTN8 quarterfinal at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday. Picture: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix JOHANNESBURG - Stellenbosch FC are ready to be the Western Cape flagbearers in South Africa's football top-tier this season, according to veteran goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt. Local rivals Cape Town City were relegated at the end of last season, while Stellies finished in a credible third position for the second consecutive season. The Winelands club also finished runners-up in the MTN8, and enjoyed a dream run to the semi-finals in the Caf Confederation Cup. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Langeveldt feels the Maroons have become accustomed to carrying the Cape football's hopes on their shoulders. 'I think over the past few seasons, I think we were basically carrying Cape Town football,' Langeveldt said at the MTN8 launch at the SuperSport Studios in Randburg. 'Last season we won a trophy, this season we want to continue with that, winning trophies. Last season we made it to the semi-final of Caf, final of top 8, and 3rd in the league. Now it's the next hurdle to hopefully win the League and win another trophy.' Betway Premiership championship success might be a steep mountain to climb considering Mamelodi Sundowns' depth of talent and resources, but Steve Barker's charges will certainly have a crack at the MTN8 title they came so close to annexing last season. A strong showing in the MTN8 will also give Stellenbosch the confidence that they can sustain a strong challenge in the League after another off-season that has seen major exits at Danie Craven Stadium. Our first match of the season is just over a week away 🔜 🆚 AmaZulu FC 🏆 #MTN8 quarter-final 🏟 DHL Stadium, Cape Town 📅 3 August 2025 🕙 15h00 📺 SABC Sport & SuperSport 🎟️ R60.00 from Open Tickets — Stellenbosch FC (@StellenboschFC) July 25, 2025 Ivorian central defender Ismael Toure has moved to the UAE, while midfielder Sihle Nduli and left wing-back Fawaaz Basadien have moved up to the highveld rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively. Langeveldt believes Stellenbosch have showed that they can regroup after similar high-profile departures like Ashley du Preez, Jayden Adams, Iqraam Rayners and Zitha Kwinike in recent seasons. 'I think it's the model of the club, we're always going to lose our quality players, but we always replace well,' he said. 'I think credit to the recruitment department, there's always a plan in place if we do lose these players. 'We've proven over the last couple of years that we can do it, and hopefully we can continue like that, always bringing the same quality of players.' The 38-year-old is unlikely to feature in Sunday's MTN8 quarter-final against AmaZulu having recently been assimilated into the Stellies' coaching staff with Sage Stephens and Oscarine Masuluke set to battle it out for the No 1 jersey, but Langeveldt is elated that the club will at least face the Usuthu at Cape Town Stadium after their gypsy-like existence last season. Stellenbosch played 'home' matches in Durban, Gqeberha and even Pretoria last season. 'At least we're playing in Cape Town, so that's a positive,' he said. ' Hopefully, D.C. (Danie Craven Stadium) will be sorted soon and we can play in Stellenbosch where most of our supporters are. 'Yeah, Amazulu, it's going to be a tough match. I think they're a good team. They released a couple of players over the off-season, I think it's more than 15 if I'm not mistaken. 'So they're in a re-building phase, hopefully we can use that advantage to our advantage.'

Fifa youth coach Thabo Senong on abundance of talent in SA

He says if players are exposed to quality coaching from an early age they will peak at about 17 and 18 years old and that will increase their chances of moving to clubs abroad early. As SA U-20 coach, Senong steered Amajita to two U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and coached the team at the Fifa U-20 World Cup in Poland. He says there is an abundance of talent in South Africa that needs to be discovered. He emphasises the importance of young South African players moving overseas and some, such as Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates, going to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with Bafana Bafana in December and January. He urges players in coach Molefi Ntseki's local-based Bafana squad, most of whom are clubless, to take advantage of the opportunity to represent the country at the African Nations Championship co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in August.
