Here's How 17 Countries Around The World Celebrate Valentine's Day, From Ireland To China
In the United States, when Valentine's Day approaches, we're so quick to grab that box of chocolates or reach for those iconic conversation candy hearts. But a fascination with a deeper form of culinary connectivity and food history made me wonder: How are people celebrating, and what are they eating, around the world?
From a Yucatán roast chicken dish called Pollo Pibil in Mexico to a Nigerian street food called Suya, copious amounts of cocoa in Ghana to buttery Biscoff-filled hot cross buns in Australia, here's what 17 countries around the globe will be eating this love day.
1.South Africa: Marshmallow Pies
A classic dessert made of marshmallow, chocolate, and wafer, marshmallow pies are an integral part of Valentine's Day celebrations in South Africa. Whip up a batch of your own and treat your sweetie to the kind of fluffy filling dreams are made of.
2.China: Qiaoguo
Though Valentine's Day isn't celebrated in China until summertime — on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month — it's commemorated with the annual Qiqiao (Qixi) festival. The fried Qiaoguo, made with oil, flour, and sugar, is the traditional pastry at the festival and often comes with a sweet sesame filling.
3.Italy: Baci Perugina
In Italy, the famous La Festa degli Innamorati, The Day of Lovers, calls for Baci Perugina, chocolate kisses with cherries and love notes tucked inside. On the savory side, Spaghetti Alla Carbonara, Osso Buco, and Penne all'Arrabbiata (followed by more Baci, of course) are also popular.
4.Egypt: Fatteh and Kahk
In Egypt, a main dish called Fatteh consists of spice-boiled lamb or beef (or other proteins) served over a bed of rice alongside toasted pita bread and a garlicky tomato sauce. For dessert, there's a traditional cookie known as Kahk, which is filled with nuts or dates and dusted with powdered sugar.
5.Argentina: Alfajores
Argentinians don't celebrate Valentine's Day in February, but instead celebrate 'the week of sweetness' in July. A common sweet treat, alfajores consists of two round cookies made from flour, honey, almonds, and cinnamon, that are often filled (or topped) with dulce de leche.

6.Mexico: Pollo Pibil
In Mexico, Valentine's Day is called The Day of Love and Friendship, or El Día del Amor y la Amistad. Lovers and friends enjoy a Yucatán roast chicken dish known as Pollo Pibil, which is made with achiote paste, citrus, and spices.
7.United Kingdom: Potato Dauphinoise
In Potato Dauphinoise, thinly sliced potatoes are layered with cream and cheese for the ultimate comfort food decadence. To really do it as they do in the UK, pair this love day side dish with a classic Beef Wellington.
And in Great Britain, specifically: The Pacific Oyster
The long-associated-with-love oyster is a popular item for romantic meals around the world. But in Great Britain, they specifically choose to eat special Pacific Oysters, which are produced on farms, instead of the native oysters—because only the best bivalves for your boo.
8.Australia: Biscoff-Filled Hot Cross Buns
Commonly served as an Easter treat in Australia, Biscoff-Filled Hot Cross Buns have since stolen the show on Valentine's Day, too. Fluffy, warm, and soft, these beautiful, buttery buns are filled with Lotus Biscoff cookie butter spread for an irresistible treat.
9.Bulgaria: Local Wine
It's bottoms up in Bulgaria! On February 14, Bulgarians celebrate St. Trifon Zarezan, the saint of wine. Couples toast with local wine, priests perform blessings over the country's vineyards, and farmers prepare wine-inspired feasts alongside their family and friends. It's also said that on this day, as tradition has it, the housewife rises early to knead and bake grape-leaf bread and prepare the rice-stuffed chicken.
10.Japan: Honmei Choco and Giri Choco

11.Ireland: Sweet Carrot Dishes
Though chocolate is still a top choice in Ireland, sweet carrot side dishes have surprisingly risen to the top as a Valentine's Day go-to. Bring a taste of Ireland to your table with Irish Buttered Carrots, also called Slieve Na Mbam, which are simmered in milk and butter.
12.Sweden: Hjärtansfras and Kärleksmums
In Sweden, Valentine's Day or Alla hjärtans dag (All Heart's Day) is celebrated with hjärtansfras — heart-shaped waffles topped with whipped cream and berries. They're also known to indulge in kärleksmums, or "love treats," a light chocolate cake topped with chocolate coffee glaze and shredded coconut.
13.Ghana: Cocoa
In Ghana, February 14th is also National Chocolate Day. As one of the largest cocoa-producing countries in the world, Ghanaians celebrate the day with concerts, festivals, and copious chocolate consumption.
14.United States: Conversation Hearts
Etched with words like 'BFF,' 'CUTIE,' and 'ROCKSTAR,' Brach's iconic Conversation Hearts are about as Valentine's Day-ish as it gets in the United States. From lemon-lime to wintergreen, there's a go-to flavor and phrase for the love day gifter in us all.
15.Canada: Heart-Shaped Sweets
Similar to the United States, our Canadian neighbors love their heart-shaped treats, too. A symbol of love and romance, they celebrate with heart-shaped sweets — sugar cookies, cinnamon heart candies, and chocolate hearts.
16.France: Macarons
Traditionally the French celebrated Valentine's Day with 'une loterie d'amour," in which single people stood outside of their homes calling to others until they paired off. Today, they keep it simple with a delicately chewy, perfectly balanced, slightly nutty-in-flavor macaron (and perhaps, a box of chocolate and a glass of wine from Bordeaux to go along with it).
17.Nigeria: Suya
A popular Nigerian street food, Suya is made from strips of seasoned meat that are marinated, skewered, and grilled. Often made with tender beef and a spicy peanut sauce, it can be served with onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce, and lime juice.
And that's a love day wrap from around the world! Do you have a culinary tradition of your own that you look forward to celebrating on Valentine's Day? Share it with us — and spread the culinary love — in the comments! ❤️

'Tension' Rises Between Katy Perry And Orlando Bloom Amid Latest Backlash
and are reportedly hitting a few sour notes in their relationship. A new source claims that Katy Perry has been feeling the pressure following the release of her latest album "143," which dropped in September, and it is causing some "tension" with Orlando Bloom. The insider spoke with PEOPLE Magazine, claiming, 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album,' they shared. 'It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' The album, a high-energy, love-fueled dance-pop collection, was designed to be a celebration. 'My vision was to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message,' Perry explained in a statement at the time, referring to the retro pager code meaning 'I love you.' But not everyone was feeling the love. A second source added, 'She was also disappointed in some of the tour reviews. It's put stress on their relationship.' Despite the criticism, Perry has powered through with a sold-out tour that's been met with enthusiastic fans overseas. After selling out three nights in Mexico, prompting the addition of an extra show, the singer is now performing to packed venues in Australia. The "Lifetimes" tour hits the U.S. beginning July 10 in Denver. As for the negative chatter? Perry isn't letting it define her. Back in February, she spoke candidly to PEOPLE about tuning out the noise. 'You shouldn't read it when it's good. You shouldn't read it when it's bad,' she said. 'My therapist said something that really changed my life. What anybody thinks about you is none of your business. It's what you think about yourself.' She also revealed that "143" was born out of 'a real shift' in her life after becoming a mom to daughter Daisy Dove, whom she welcomed with Bloom in August 2020. 'I really tapped into that feminine divine energy. The messages on it are celebratory. They're about love.' Perry and Bloom have been together for nearly a decade and got engaged on Valentine's Day in 2019. While the couple has weathered ups and downs over the years, Perry recently showed she's still fiercely protective of her man. During her May 17 show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the 'Teenage Dream' singer jokingly called out a fan in the audience for sliding into Bloom's DMs. 'Cute grin. I know why you're here,' she teased from the stage before launching into her song 'I'm his, he's mine.' 'Listen, if you keep DM'ing my man... Oh, Kyle? I know, I know. You've been doing it for months, ever since the residency,' she continued. 'If you keep on DM'ing my man, I'm going to have you removed. Seriously, get your own life.' When the fan tried to hand her something, Perry wasn't having it. 'I don't want it. I'm his. I said I'm his. Stay the f-ck away.' Bloom got candid about his relationship with Perry during a 2019 appearance on the "Today" show, emphasizing the importance of being on the same page before walking down the aisle again. 'It's important to me that we are aligned. I've been married and divorced, and I don't want to do it again,' Bloom shared at the time. 'And we're both fully aware of that. She's remarkable and so I'm always so impressed with that and I'm encouraged.' Three years after Orlando Bloom popped the question, Katy Perry opened up about their postponed wedding during an appearance on "The Kyle and Jackie O Show," explaining that the COVID-19 pandemic had put their wedding plans on hold. 'It's a destination location that like, you know, we're still trying for it to work out, but every couple of months it's like, 'New variant! New variant! New variant!'' she said. Last year, Perry opened up about attending couples therapy with Bloom and how it's helped strengthen their bond. Speaking on Chelsea Handler's "Dear Chelsea" podcast, the singer explained that therapy has played a key role in keeping their relationship grounded. 'We love it because it keeps us in tune,' she said. 'The resentment can get really strong when you're both working hard, and so when you want to come back to being normal in a domesticated world where you have a child and stuff like that, you have to really learn how to be kind of different out there in the big and in the small.'

The Atlanta rapper posted and deleted two uploads on X after Cardi B made her new romance Instagram official. 'good roll out n PR,' declared Offset, per PageSix. Additionally, the former Migos member shared a meme of a man throwing a basketball with the wording 'Today I'll pass.' The social media shade is the latest public move in the dramatic saga between the former Hip-Hop power couple. Last week, Offset reportedly filed to seek spousal support from the 'Bodak Yellow' performer, and maintains his request for joint custody of their children, although he agrees Cardi B's house should serve as their primary residence. This resulted in Cardi B letting off a scathing series of insults against her estranged husband to fans willing to listen on X Spaces. 'Word to my mother… I want you to die but I want you to die slow. And while you dying you gotta think of me. Let me tell y'all something, when I first filed for divorce, my lawyer started filing sh*t, and this ni**a started spazzing,' exclaimed the 32-year-old. Cardi B and Offset were married in September 2017 however, in August 2024, the Bronx rapper filed for divorce amid recurring rumors of infidelity and the permanent end of their marital bliss. The couple shares three children: son Wave, 3, and daughters Kulture, 6, and Blossom, who is 8 months old. The now official relationship between Cardi B and Steffon Diggs began as a rumored romance when they were spotted together multiple times near the Valentine's Day holiday. 'It's been a couple of weeks and I haven't addressed nothing,' shared the Grammy-winner on social media this spring. 'Because it's like… you know when you got a gorgeous ni**a f**king you and loving you from head to toe? It's like, I don't really give a f**k what anybody says when you got a real fine ni**a that love you from head to toe. It's like, whatever, gorgeous ni**ga, too!'
