A dog has been praised for her remarkable display of loyalty and courage when she took on two charging bears to protect her canine companion.
The pit bull mix Marion was rushed to the vets after she came up against two wild bears while spending time in the backyard.
Marion was playing with her "boyfriend" Bruno, a tiny chiweenie belonging to a friend of her owner. Bruno began barking as two bears approaching the property, and when one of the bears lunged toward him, Marion didn't hesitate.
"Marion immediately ran to defend him, squaring up with two bears. One of the bears attacked her, pinning her on the ground and biting her on her neck and face," Claire Samford, Referral Coordinator at the Emergency Vet Clinic of Niceville and Destin told Newsweek. "Miraculously, she escaped and was brought to our clinic for emergency care."

Marion was rushed to the vets where she received emergency care for her injuries. A video shared by the clinic on TikTok showed her standing, with two bandaged legs and a caption that read: "Our Maryann is 'Marion' who didn't hesitate to take on not one, but two bears to save her boyfriend."
"We've seen our fair share here in Florida so far this summer," Samford said. "But most don't come with a heroine story like Marions."
The only bear species in Florida is the black bear, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimate there are around 4,000 bears in the state.
There is evidence that the prevalence of bears in Florida has increased in recent years. According to data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) the total number of bear-related calls in Florida has significantly increased over the 20-year span, from 1,919 calls in 2005 to 7,311 calls in 2024—a nearly 4-fold increase.
In 2024, non-core complaints (calls about bear interactions that could be positive or negative) reached their highest ever at 65 percent, suggesting that more bears are being seen in communities, though not necessarily causing harm, while core complaints (where conflicts occur) made up 35 percent of calls.
"We do see our fair share of bear attacks at our Emergency Vet Clinic in Florida around this time of year, but the fact that Marion risked her life for her Chiweenie boyfriend made this story stand out and really melted our hearts," Samford said.
In the TikTok video sharing Marion's story, people rushed to praise the brave pup as it amassed more than 370,000 views.
Set against the song 'Goodbye Earl' by The Chicks, the clip was captioned: "Campaigning to have the lyrics changed from Mary Ann to Marion for this hero."

While they added: "Our Maryann is "Marian" who didn't hesitate to take on not one, but two bears to save her boyfriend when se saw them charge him in the backyard" in the on-screen text.
"Dogs really are angels on Earth. I just wanna give her a big hug," said one commenter.
While another wrote: "You can tell she's a gentle baby too I'm gonna cry what a good girl."
Marion's owner later shared an update on her condition: "Marion's wounds are already closed and healing nicely. She was back to her normal self the very next day as if nothing happened. She's so back to normal that I'm worried that she would go after the bear again if she saw one, especially if she thinks she needs to protect us.
"She has no fear other than taking a bath, so I'm on high alert. She was homeless her first year of life before we adopted her, so I think she has a lot of toughness in her from surviving on the streets alone."

Crime Sparks State of Emergency in New Mexico: What We Know
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. New Mexico Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency Wednesday for Rio Arriba County—including the city of Española and surrounding Pueblo communities—citing a significant surge in violent crime, drug trafficking, and other public safety threats that have overwhelmed local capacity. The declaration enables the release of up to $750,000 in emergency funding to bolster local law enforcement, expand resources, and stabilize affected communities. In a statement, the governor said, "When our local leaders called for help to protect their communities, we responded immediately with decisive action," emphasizing that the state will marshal all available resources to restore public safety. State officials connected the crime rise to broader social challenges, including homelessness, family instability, and a growing opioid crisis. Española, in northern New Mexico, is situated approximately 255 miles north of the U.S.–Mexico border. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.

Teenagers Allegedly Steal and Crash Train—Police
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Two juveniles have been charged with numerous counts after allegedly entering multiple rail facilities and causing a train crash in Laurens, South Carolina. A spokesperson for the Laurens County Sheriff's Office declined to comment to Newsweek, due to the incident taking place out of its jurisdiction. Newsweek reached out to the Laurens Police Department via phone and email for comment. Why It Matters Railroad yards and live tracks present unique hazards like moving equipment, heavy railcars and energized systems that authorities warn can have life-threatening consequences. There were 65,000 cargo thefts on U.S. railways in 2024, according to the Association of American Railroads, representing a 40 percent year-over-year increase. That number of thefts equates to approximately 180 cargo thefts per day nationwide. Cargo theft is estimated to have cost Class I railroads over $100 million in 2024 alone. Getty Images What To Know The Laurens Police Department wrote in an August 11 Facebook post that the two juveniles, whose names and ages were not made public, purportedly started a locomotive engine that was linked to two others and drove the three engines out of a yard and onto a line toward Greenville, South Carolina. The connected train subsequently collided with parked railcars while attempting to return the equipment to the yard, causing a derailment and property damage, according to law enforcement officials. "While attempting to return the engines to the yard, the juveniles collided with parked railcars, causing a derailment of the engine and significant damage to one of the cars," officials said. Both juveniles were charged with the following crimes: second-degree burglary; grand larceny (over $10,000); malicious damage to property (over $10,000); willful destruction of railroad property; and injury to railroad. They are detained at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. Investigators opened the case on Saturday evening after the incident reportedly took place between about 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and involved property belonging to Carolina Piedmont Railroad and CSX Transportation. It remains unclear as to how exactly the suspects gained access to the equipment and how they operated the locomotives. What People Are Saying Laurens Police Chief Heath Copeland on Facebook on August 11: "This was a dangerous and reckless act. Railroad property is not a place to play. Trains, rail lines, and yards present serious risks, and unauthorized access can have life-threatening consequences." What Happens Next Laurens Police officers continue to investigate the incident. Law enforcement encourages civilians to report activity that seems out of the ordinary.

Abigail Spanberger Wins Backing of Group That Endorsed Glenn Youngkin
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the endorsement of a police organization that backed GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin in his 2021 run, as polls suggest Spanberger has carved out a polling lead over her Republican rival, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Newsweek reached out to the Spanberger and Earle-Sears campaigns for comment via email. Why It Matters Virginia voters will elect their next governor in November, as Youngkin cannot run again due to term limits. The party outside of the White House has historically performed well in the off-year elections in the former battleground that has shifted toward Democrats over the past few decades. But the race will be a key test for both parties. Democrats will be hoping to win back voters who shifted rightward and test their message ahead of the midterms. Republicans, meanwhile, will be aiming to hold onto those same voters, particularly Latino and Asian voters with whom President Donald Trump made inroads last year. What to Know Spanberger rolled out the endorsement of the Virginia Police Benevolent Association (PBA) on Wednesday, less than three months before Virginia voters cast their ballots in the race. Joe Woloszyn, president of the Virginia PBA, wrote in a statement that he believes Spanberger "understands the responsibility of putting on the badge" as a former federal law enforcement. Former Representative Abigail Spanberger attends a rally in Alexandria, Virginia on April 10, 2025. Former Representative Abigail Spanberger attends a rally in Alexandria, Virginia on April 10, 2025."As a Member of Congress, she repeatedly voted to increase funding for local police departments and sheriff's offices — and she was relentless in pushing her bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act across the finish line to secure the earned benefits of thousands of Virginia's retired police officers," he wrote. In 2021, the organization backed Youngkin for governor and Earle-Sears in the lieutenant governor race. Both went on to narrowly win their elections against Democratic candidates in November—Youngkin by 2 points and Earle-Sears by 1.5 points. At the time, Woloszyn wrote that Youngkin had an "in depth understanding of the complex issues currently facing law enforcement in the commonwealth. The endorsement came after the Democrats' 2021 nominee, former Governor Terry McAuliffe, declined to meet with the group. Virginia Governor Race: What Polls Show The latest polls of the Virginia governor race show Spanberger with a lead. A Virginia Commonwealth University poll released last month showed Spanberger leading by 12 points (49 percent to 37 percent). It surveyed 764 registered voters from June 19, 2025, to July 3, 2025, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.16 percentage points. A HarrisX poll from earlier this year showed a closer race, showing her up four points (52 percent to 48 percent). It surveyed 1,000 likely voters from May 9 to May 13, 2025. What People Are Saying Woloszyn wrote in the statement: "Abigail has a deep, expert-level knowledge of the unique challenges facing Virginia's law enforcement officers, and she is a leader who shares our goal of building trust across our communities and working towards a safer, stronger Commonwealth. The VAPBA Board of Directors is proud to publicly endorse Abigail Spanberger for Governor of Virginia." Spanberger wrote in a statement: "Virginians deserve a Governor who recognizes the tremendous sacrifice that comes with swearing an oath to protect and serve our neighbors. As Governor, I will always make sure our brave men and women in blue have the tools, resources, and training they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. I look forward to working directly with VAPBA and the communities they serve as Governor to have the backs of our fellow Virginians who go to work each day to put others first." Political scientist Larry Sabato wrote to X: "Interesting. I always look for endorsement flips. VA Police Benevolent Association--which backed all Rs in 2021-- just endorsed Spanberger (D). They stuck with Rs for Lt Gov (Reid) and AG (Miyares). In '21 the group backed Earle-Sears for Lt Gov." Journalist David Weigel wrote on X: "One of McAuliffe's 2021 fumbles was skipping the VPBA meeting; he had trouble navigating the post-George Floyd landscape where police unions didn't trust Dems, was annoyed that his record wasn't enough." What Happens Next The Virginia gubernatorial general election is scheduled for November 4, 2025.
