‘F**k off': Darren Lockyer's Origin change room interview goes off the rails

News.com.au10-07-2025
They say in live TV you should never work with children or animals — maybe they should add old blokes with beers to that list.
Queensland Origin legend Darren Lockyer has learned the hard way after he was interview-blocked from a chat with Queensland winger Xavier Coates in an excruciating 90 seconds of TV after the Maroons wrapped up the 2025 State of Origin series.
The Maroons dominated the game, claiming a commanding 24-12 win that if anything flattered NSW.
It meant the beverages were flowing as the celebrations began well before full-time thanks to the 20-0 halftime buffer and the Maroons' near impenetrable defence.
Tears were also flowing at full-time after Cameron Munster's father's death in the lead up to the decider, but after a win that's been compared to iconic triumphs like 'Fatty's Nevilles' in 1995 and the 'worst Queensland team in history' in 2020, the beers were flowing just as freely.
So when Lockyer headed into the sheds, he knew it wasn't going to be easy.
The man himself declared it 'one of the greatest wins of the Queensland team'.
He kicked off with a chat with North Queensland Cowboys star Reuben Cotter, who said he was exhausted after making 41 tackles.
He praised Wally Lewis medallist Tom Dearden for 'being in my ear'.
Asked what he said, Cotter responded: 'I probably can't say that on TV'.
It didn't take much prompting for him to add: 'He was f**king into me about making the tackles and staying in the game.'
Strong start Locky!
After telling Cotter to have a beer 'for every tackle you did tonight', he moved on towards Xavier Coates.
'Big X, Big X,' Lockyer said as the camera moved in on the back of ex-Queensland player Norm Carr.
Watch the full exchange in the video player above.
The 70-year-old Carr, who was selected on the bench, but didn't play in the inaugural State of Origin match in 1980 before tallying three games over 1981 and 1982, clearly hasn't done too much TV as the first words he said to Lockyer were 'Darren, f**k off'.
The hilarious moment saw Lockyer and Coates burst into laughter before Carr went for an awkward handshake into a hug.
Lockyer then put the mic in front of Carr, asking: 'That one was plenty of effort, wasn't it?'
'Unbelievable. They just knew how to win,' Carr said. 'It doesn't matter what I say — these blokes done it.'
Lockyer, who had been asked for a photo when he first arrived at the conversation, tried again to make it happen to no avail.
He then turned to 1980s Maroons five-eighth Alan Smith to save the segment.
Amazing Queensland performance,' Smith said. 'These guys did what they had to be done, and full credit to the team and Billy, they were smart enough to work out how to do it and did it.'
Finally turning to Coates, Lockyer said: 'Now X …' when Carr pushed back in to cut Lockyer off.
'F**king hell, Normy's getting rough in here, he's getting a bit rough old Normie,' Lockyer said.
'We've still got to get the photo, I'll come back to you X.
'Normie's just told me to …,' Lockyer added as he walked away.
So in a 90 second interview, Coates said a grand total of zero words to Lockyer.
While he finished with a more textbook chat with fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Lockyer bailed out, saying he'd 'go and find Normie Carr, get him in a headlock and have another beer with him'.
Fans were loving the utter trainwreck in the sheds.
One wrote: 'Channel 9 needs to stop sending Lockyer to do interviews in the winning shed.'
Another posted: 'Channel 9 unhinged tonight with their interviews between Gal and Sonny spilling their testosterone & Darren Lockyer going rogue in the sheds being told to f**k off — it's great telly.'
A third added: 'This Darren Lockyer segment in the dressing sheds is the best kind of car crash. I'm in stitches. Drunk Queenslander everywhere hahah.'

The Jim and Greg Lee-trained Glorious Moments makes a statement with commanding win at Randwick

It's been more than 10 years since long-time Randwick stalwarts Jim and Greg Lee tasted black-type success, but their next feature win might be just around the corner. The Lee brothers last tasted Stakes race success in the 2015 Winter Challenge with Keepit To Yourself but the latest product to come out of their stable, Glorious Moments made a serious statement at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The lightly raced gelding produced a classy turn of foot to put his rivals away in fine style when scoring an emphatic win in The Agency 3YO Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m). The home track victory came at just the fourth start for Glorious Moments which was sidelined for more than 12 months after his first two starts as a juvenile due to a quarter crack in a hoof. 'You do what you can to keep it together but unfortunately it didn't work out early in his career and he eventually had to go out,' Greg Lee said leading up to Saturday. 'The only way that is going to repair is giving them time and that's what we did.' Glorious Moments made a winning return from a long spell at Canterbury on June 18 then on Saturday he provided his winning jockey Heavelon Van Der Hoven with his first Sydney metropolitan winner, 24 hours before the rider relocates to continue his career. Van Der Hoven, 32, was born in Namibia and has been based in New South Wales for five years but on Sunday, he's making the move to Queensland in the quest of more opportunities. 'I'm very grateful for the chance to ride a horse like this,' Van Der Hoven said. 'I'm going to Brisbane. I'm just going to try and see how I go up there. GLORIOUS 🙌 How good was that from Glorious Moments and @HeavelonVan! Utterly dominant in the fourth at Randwick ðŸ'°ðŸ'° â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 26, 2025 • Nashville Jack in fine tune with slashing win 'I really like the atmosphere and the weather up there. 'If I get offered the chance I'll jump on a plane to come back and ride this horse. I'd go anywhere to ride him.' Glorious Moments ($3.80 eq fav), a rising four-year-old by the 2019 Doncaster winner Brutal, came from the second half of the field, switching to the outside of runners at the top of the straight and letting down strongly to win by a widening four-and-a-quarter lengths. 'He still has a bit to learn,' Van Der Hoven said. 'He didn't know when to travel or when to relax, he did everything a bit upside down. 'He's so raw but he's very exciting. 'He's got a really good turn of foot and that will be an advantage as the races get harder. 'He's a very exciting horse.' Randwick-trained horses filled the placings with Codetta ($5) second, one-amd-a-half lengths ahead of Signor Tortoni ($5) in third. Stardeel was the other $3.80 equal favourite and finished fourth. @aus_turf_club â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 18, 2025 • Ole Dancer 'has quality' for spring despite Moody query Greg Lee hinted that Glorious Moments could be 'the best horse we've had for a long while' and that he believes the gelding will continue to improve with more experience and as the distances increase, suggesting 'I think he will run a mile plus'. Stable racing manager and part owner of Glorious Moments, Keith Lam, suggested that a trip to Melbourne is a possibility in the weeks and or months ahead for the emerging talent. 'He's a lovely horse. It's taken a fair while for us to get to this point but finally he's starting to show what we've known what he has,' Lam said. 'He did that pretty easy today. 'There's a couple of black-type races coming up Melbourne for him. 'I don't have the names of the races here but there are a couple of suitable races coming up for him. 'It will either be next start or maybe the one after. We'll just see how he pulls up.'

Lucie Fityus excited to compete in first Tour de France Femmes

Since Lucie Fityus started cycling at the age of 11, she has been asked one question time and time again: Will you race the Tour de France? The Newcastle-born rider will be able to answer "yes" to that question when she lines up for the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes on Saturday night, AEST. Fityus is competing in her maiden Tour de France Femmes, and is one of seven Australians participating in this year's tour. Racing for French team St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93, Fityus will be teammates with fellow Aussie Emily Watts. Speaking to ABC Sport ahead of her first tour, Fityus said excitement was the emotion she feels most. "It's been a really long journey. I started when I was 11 or 12 back in Newcastle on the Velodrome. "It's taken years to get to this point. It's been a really, really steady sort of build since I was younger. "So, I'm really excited for it." Fityus said she only got into the sport because, growing up, she would copy whatever her brother would do. So when she saw his mates racing on the Velodrome, she jumped at the opportunity when they invited her into the sport. "My parents aren't cycling people at all, so I wasn't introduced to it through my parents. "[My brother's] friends got him into it, and then they got me into it." Now a professional cyclist living in Spain, Fityus has taken part in big races this year, including Paris-Roubaix Femmes and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes. The Australian will also garner the support of the locals during the tour, who enjoy cheering for a French team as much as they enjoy cheering for French riders. "It's quite special to be competing in the biggest French race with a French team." A maiden tour also means a new style of preparation to tackle the nine-stage event, which ends with two big mountain stages. For Fityus, this meant joining her teammates on a camp at high altitude, spending two and a half weeks above 1,800 metres of elevation. "This assists in sort of naturally raising your red blood cell level in your body, so that you then have more oxygen going around your blood," she said. "The effects last for about three weeks, and that's a little bit different. I haven't done that before." The Tour de France Femmes begins on Saturday evening, AEST, in the Brittany region of north western France, with a 78.8-kilometre stage from Vannes to Plumelec.

Peter Moody says immature filly Ole Dancer ‘has the quality' to race in spring after her return win at Caulfield

Less could be more if strong Caulfield winner Ole Dancer makes it to the Group 1 Thousand Guineas in October. The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman -trained filly remained unbeaten in the 2YO Handicap (1200m), the former said the two-year-old had plenty of improving to do. Premiership-leading jockey Blake Shinn had to push Ole Dancer off the leaders' heels into clear running in the straight but the $3.90 favourite comfortably held off the honest Thanks Gorgeous ($6.50) to win by a length. 'She got a little bit lost when she went to the front but she's a quality filly that is still quite immature but I think she's got nice upside to come,' Moody said. 'I think she's got the quality to be running in spring races but whether she has the maturity will probably be the question mark.' Ole Dancer easily won the SA Magic Millions Classic on debut at Murray Bridge in March before making it two wins from as many starts at Caulfield. However, Moody said the Ole Kirk filly had not shown 'as much (development) as I would have liked' in the months between her first and second starts. Good luck catching @blake_shinn now! He's on the board immediately as Ole Dancer makes it two from two for the Moody/Coleman team! @moodyracingpgm @kscoleman â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 26, 2025 The rising three-year-old's immaturity means Moody and Coleman were likely to give Ole Dancer one run between Saturday and the Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 18. 'If she got to a race like a Thousand Guineas, she'd probably get there on one run, she's that type of filly,' Moody said. 'She won't need a lot of racing due to a lack of maturity so we'll just monitor that as we go along. 'Maybe there will be something in the back end of August. 'Well give her another month and a pretty easy time of it and find another 12 (00) or 1300(m) or something like that.' Ole Dancer gave Moody and Coleman their 29th city win of the season, leaving the Pakenham-based duo sixth in the Melbourne trainers' premiership. â– â– â– â– â– STYLISH BIRTHDAY PRESENT Stylish Secret gave trainer Mick Nolan an early 70th birthday present with victory at Caulfield. Stylish Secret overhauled Verona Rupes with every bit of fitness acquired from seven preceding starts for the campaign to get the result – Nolan's first Caulfield winner. 'My first runners I had at Moonee Valley, Flemington and Sandown all won,' Nolan said. 'I've been a bit cranky, I've had to wait four (starters) for this, but I've got them all now.' Nolan, who turns 70 on Sunday, will celebrate the birthday with Stylish Secret owners and '10 stubbies too many'. 'It's going to be great, all the owners are going to be there,' Nolan said. 'You only get to 70 once in your life.' "Little in stature, big in heart!" Stylish Secret back in the winners stall as @CWilliamsJockey gets back within 7 wins of Blake Shinn. Who believes in miracles ðŸ'¿ðŸ™ â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 26, 2025 Stylish Secret covered 13,500 race metres the past seven starts, building to the 2400m 3YO Open Handicap win. 'I sent an audio this morning (owners' update), I added it up (distance raced) … said it's done 15,000 metres, Bart (Cummings)only had to do 10,000 (metres),' Nolan said. Cups King Bart Cummings had a theory stayers required 10,000 metres under the belt to prepare for the Melbourne Cup. FAMILY MATTERS Jockey Matt Cartwright sealed a special win aboard Pop Award for his grandmother and mother, trainers Lyn Tolson and Leonie Proctor, at Caulfield on Saturday. Cartwright went stride for stride in the straight Blake Shinn-ridden favourite Verdoux and got the result late in the 1100m Benchmark 78. Shinn had ridden Pop Award to victory last campaign but could not quite get the 55kg required on Saturday. 'I know I'm family but I'm still thankful I got the ride on her because of the 55kg,' Cartwright said. 'There was a bit of pressure around, obviously I'm not Blake Shinn. 'I'm glad I could give her (Pop Award) a good ride and she won well.' Cartwright felt comfortable throughout on Pop Award despite the mare being first-up. Cartwright is set to ride in New Zealand next season. POP AWARD 🥇🥇🥇🥇 Four in a row for the Lyn Tolson & Leonie Proctor trained mare, she's a ripper! @MattCartwrigh14 â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 26, 2025 DICTIONARY ROLLS ODDS-ON 'CHAMPION' Trainer John Moloney was almost apologetic after his charge Dictionary outslugged Jimmy The Bear in the VOBIS Gold Stayers(2400m). Blinkers made all the difference to Dictionary ($14) while jockey Daniel Stackhouse's ground-saving ride contributed to the gelding's upset win over the $1.45 favourite. 'To knock off the legend Jimmy The Bear, well that's a bit special,' Moloney said. 'You never want to knock down a champion and he's been the champion of this winter so we were lucky to beat him.' 'Jimmy has nearly done everything (to win) but it's a treat to be able to pull the race off.' Dictionary ran third in last year's edition of the $175,000 race before prevailing in Saturday's five-horse field. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT 🤯😲 Dictionary somehow rallies to beat Jimmy The Bear in a desperate go! Jimmy looked home but goes under at $1.40 😱😱 @DanielStack33 â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 26, 2025
