African-Asian Union names Luxor ‘First World Capital of Culture, History and Heritage'
The award came after the final selection and competition with Kyoto, Japan, where Luxor city won unanimously by the Supreme International Committee of AFASU Golden Awards, which consists of 42 members and representatives from all international and global institutions.
This award comes in recognition of Luxor's global status as an icon of culture and civilization.
The President of AFASU Hossam Mohamed Darwish explained that this award is one of the leading awards presented by the union to honor cities that have an exceptional historical and cultural legacy.
The award is given to the city has distinguished its efforts in preserving heritage, developing culture and promoting sustainable tourism.
Luxor Governor Abdel-Mottaleb Emara expressed his pride at Luxor receiving this award, stressing that the great cultural heritage of the city requires preservation and continuous development.
He pledged to achieve sustainable development in the city, befitting its status as one of the main tourist destinations in the world.
The African-Asian Union
The AFASU is an international union that aims to enhance cooperation between the African and Asian continents in the fields of tourism, culture, technology, sustainable development and innovation through innovative programs and international initiatives.
The union seeks to promote human values and cultural understanding among peoples.
The AFASU emerged from the Afro-Asian Peoples' Solidarity Organization (AAPSO), which is the second oldest international popular non-governmental organization in the world.
It was established by a decision and international treaty from African and Asian leaders with an idea launched by Presidents Nehru, Tito and Abdel Nasser at the Bandung Conference in Indonesia in 1955.
It has members from 92 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. The AFASU is one of the executive arms of this venerable organization.

Egypt's Al-Mashat participates in business forum to kick off Japan visit
Egyptian Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, began her visit to Tokyo on Tuesday by participating in the Egyptian-Japanese Business Forum, attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The forum, which saw the signing of several cooperation agreements, was held ahead of Egypt's participation in the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), the ministry said in a statement. The Egyptian delegation to the TICAD summit, which runs from Aug. 20-22, is headed by Madbouly and will include other ministers and private sector representatives. The summit will be attended by the Japanese prime minister, as well as numerous African heads of state and government and heads of international and African organisations. During her visit, Al-Mashat is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with Japanese government officials and financial institutions to follow up on the development of strategic relations between the two countries. She will also present an overview of the developments in the Egyptian economy since the start of economic reform measures in March 2024. Additionally, Al-Mashat is set to meet with officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to review the implementation of ongoing projects within the development cooperation portfolio. The planning ministry's statement described TICAD 9 as one of the most important international platforms for strengthening strategic partnerships between Japan and Africa. Egypt's participation affirms its pivotal role in supporting African issues and enhancing international cooperation to achieve development goals, the ministry said. Ahead of the trip, Al-Mashat met with the Japanese ambassador to Egypt and the chief representative of JICA to follow up on preparations for the conference and discuss cooperation priorities.

The international system is marked by transformations and contradictions—between greater multilateralism on one side and rising protectionism on the other—producing geo-strategic realities that place Africa before immense and exceptional challenges. At the same time, these shifts open up diverse opportunities that must be harnessed to improve the lives of African peoples and achieve sustainable development goals. Among the urgent priorities attracting the attention of think tanks and Africa-focused policymakers is the continent's transition from being merely a consumer to becoming an active contributor to the digital economy. Strategic studies are also increasingly focused on climate governance in Africa, as many African countries intensify efforts to attract green investments. Regional alliances for carbon markets have begun emerging in both East and West Africa, with Emirati investment funds standing out as key partners in supporting environmental sustainability across the continent. Any discussion of Africa's development would be incomplete without highlighting the major platforms that address its present and future. Egypt and other African nations remain committed to participating in TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) summits and ministerial meetings, given their prominent role and effective initiatives in support of Africa. TICAD is a developmental forum that brings together not only heads of state and government leaders, but also private-sector representatives, business leaders from different regions, and leading economic and international institutions engaged in Africa's growth—most notably the African Development Bank. However, the ninth edition of TICAD is taking place under a different international context than previous summits, shaped by moves that could reshape the global trading system, ongoing geopolitical shifts, the use of economic pressure as an advanced diplomatic tool, and growing global recognition of Africa as the continent of future opportunities and resources. The ninth TICAD summit will be held from August 20 to 22, 2025, preceded by senior officials' meetings in Yokohama. Its main agenda will revolve around three key pillars: society, economy, and peace & stability. Running alongside the summit will be an exhibition featuring small and medium-sized enterprises showcasing innovations in healthcare, food supply chains, climate solutions, future skills, and sustainable urban development. There is also a broad consensus among African capitals on the importance of turning challenges into opportunities, while diversifying strategic partnerships with influential players on the international stage. Japan continues to position itself as a strong supporter of Africa's development and a partner to African states in building up vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and transport—areas that enhance the continent's attractiveness to trade and investment. At the same time, most African countries recognize that the continent—both geographically and demographically—still faces great needs. Expanding infrastructure, strengthening institutions, and modernizing societies are seen as essential to confronting exceptional challenges, particularly the shortage of capabilities in digital technology sectors. Some African nations have already begun forging partnerships with global leaders in artificial intelligence, presenting a new, more open face of Africa's digital economy. This is evident in major recent projects such as the launch of a comprehensive digital geographic map to integrate African digital markets—an important step in applying AI to the continent's development plans. Fully aware of its responsibility toward the continent it belongs to, Egypt continues to support African, regional, and international efforts to address the challenges that could hinder each nation's aspirations for a more prosperous and secure future. This includes strengthening dialogue and cooperation frameworks with various international groupings to boost African economic integration and encourage optimal use of the continent's human and economic resources. Egypt attaches the highest importance to international and regional initiatives aimed at building capacity and promoting sustainable development. This is advanced through mechanisms and institutions such as the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development, which consistently supports development projects and initiatives across Africa as part of Egypt's firm and sustainable diplomatic approach to encouraging South–South cooperation, both in its traditional and modern forms. In this context, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty undertook a tour in July covering Nigeria, Senegal, Chad, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, accompanied by business leaders and representatives of industrial institutions. The visit aimed at advancing dialogue on trade and investment opportunities. PM heads to Japan to attend TICAD 9 Summit
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly departed Cairo on Monday, August 18, 2025, for Japan to represent President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), set to take place in Yokohama from August 20 to 22. Madbouly will attend the summit's opening session alongside the Japanese prime minister, African heads of state, and leaders of international and regional organizations. On the sidelines, the Egyptian premier is expected to hold high-level meetings with officials from Japanese and African organizations, as well as executives from major Japanese companies. He will also participate in the Egypt-Japan Business Council Forum, aimed at exploring opportunities to boost trade and investment between the two countries.
