WAVES Summit 2025: Chiranjeevi On His Acting Journey - "Took Inspiration From Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty"

The inaugural Waves 2025 Summit featured a panel discussion moderated by Akshay Kumar with legendary Indian cinema stars Mohanlal, Chiranjeevi, Mithun Chakraborty, Hema Malini and Rajinikanth.
The session, titled Legends & Legacies: The Stories That Shaped India's Soul, took place at Mumbai's Jio World Centre on the first day of the four-day event.
Telugu star Chiranjeevi shared his journey into acting, beginning with entertaining family and friends through dance as a child. "Slowly my inclination towards acting developed, that's when I went to Chennai, and right from the beginning, so many legends were already there. More than half-a-dozen superstars were already there. What is that extra that I could contribute? My aim was to hit the bullseye."
Chiranjeevi revealed his inspirations from across Indian cinema. "In 1977, I was a student at the Film Institute, and I saw Mithun da, and the performance he won a National Award. I took inspiration from him, to not wear makeup and look like average boy. From Sholay, I learned to do all my stunts myself. I took inspiration from the great Amitabh Bachchan. For dancing, I took inspiration from Kamal, my senior. I moulded myself."
When Akshay Kumar asked Mohanlal about the distinctive nature of Malayalam cinema, the actor explained, "There's a thin line between art-house and commercial success, but it's closely linked. Malayalam industry has always been like this. Even our art films have got entertainment value. Even entertainers have art. I've had the opportunity to work with great directors... New directors are making only art."
The Waves 2025 Summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday morning. According to the Waves website, the event serves as "a key forum for promoting discussions, collaboration, and innovation in the media and entertainment industry" and aims to "bring together industry leaders, stakeholders and innovators to discuss prospects, challenges, promote trade to India, and influence the sector's future."

Thug Life's box office collection day 7 (live): Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's film slows down
'Thug Life,' starring and directed by , hit the screen on 5 June 2025 with large-scale expectations. The highly anticipated film opened with a net of an impressive ₹ 15.5 crore on 1 day, mainly thanks to Tamil Nadu's contribution of ₹ 13.35 crore. While many praised its ambitious realm and artistic execution, others found its narrative style less attractive, especially in non-nominees, where the Telugu and Hindi versions were brought only in a minor number. Sharp drop and low occupancy After a strong start, 'Thug Life' experienced a significant decline in the collection, earning 7.15 crores on day 2, which was a 53% decline according to Sacnilk. The film recovered a little with ₹ 7.75 crore on Saturday and then again to ₹ 6.5 crore on Sunday. Workdays were difficult: Monday's ₹ 2.3 crore declined to ₹ 1.77 crore on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, only 0.35 crore. The film's week one reached a total of ₹ 41.32 crores. Tamil occupancy on day 7 was 13.14% less, with less than 14% registration at noon and morning, showing a weak occupancy. Despite a talented actors' contingent and Mani Ratnam's direction, the film's cerebral tone and large-scale elements deficiency have limited its box office legs. The plot, cast, and what lies ahead 'Thug Life' tells the story of Rangaraaya Naicker, who is a person who returns to his violent roots on emotional levels of identity and justice. Kamal Haasan led the actors in the lead roles along with Silambarasan, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Jujo George, and Gautham Karthik. With music scored by AR Rahman, cinematography by Ravi K Chandran, and editing by Srikar Prasad, the film has top-level technical cleverness. However, the box office trajectory now depends on its second-weekend performance and foreign reception, as the film reduces interest in domestic cinemas.

Chennai's You Mee takes one on a flavourful journey through Japan and beyond
Sichuan Crispy Chicken, hibachi fried rice and dorayaki pancakes are a welcome addition to the options available at Express Avenue mall. You Mee, which opened recently, is already popular with diners. The welcoming manga-inspired decor at this pan-Asian restaurant, in white, black and red, is at once dramatic and cheerful, setting the tone for an immersive and inviting experience. Pan Indian food is having its moment, as Indian diners get more adventurous experimenting beyond fried rice and Sichuan noodles. You Mee offers a glimpse into trending cuisines and dishes from Japanese ramen bowls to dimsum and ramen. The model has proved so successful that they have opened across the country, including in Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mohali and Pune. I begin with a Prawn tempura sushi roll, which is light and crisp with perfectly-cooked prawns. The roll is accompanied by crumbled fish roe, cucumber, and a touch of mayonnaise The menu offers a well-balanced mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes and vegan options. In a bid to cater to a larger audience, the food is designed for Indian diners, so there is an interesting variety of vegetarian dishes, from eight different types of vegetarian sushi to an addictively simple Japanese salad made with spinach and seasoned with a creamy sesame dressing. Among the appetisers, while the crisp lotus stem is fairly standard fare, the chilli coriander chicken dumpling and crisp chicken Sichuan stand out for their punchy flavours. The coriander chicken dumpling, filled with minced chicken, red chilli, and shiitake mushrooms, has the right balance of spices, and goes well with its tangy coriander sauce topping. We also try their New York Chilli Cheese oil dimsum, a signature dish at You Mee. This is a cheese lover's dream, with a generous stuffing, made of cream cheese, mushroom, water chestnuts, then drizzled with chilli oil. Tempted by the description of their Sichuan Crispy chicken, we order that as well, and it turns out to be a bold spicy dish of stir-fried chicken with a Himalayan chilli, black beans and Sichuan pepper. The Japanese style Miso soup that we ordered arrives hot, with a pleasing umami from the dashi stock and miso paste. The soup comes with an option of tofu or prawn. For our main dish, we decide on spicy chicken ramen. The menu also offers five vegetarian ramen options, which include a vegan coconut curry, braised tofu and kimchi. Our ramen arrives piping hot, filled with stir fried chicken chunks, bell peppers, and vegetables in a spicy miso broth. The dish is not overly fiery but has a pleasant, gentle heat. Our meal ends with the coconut palm jaggery pudding, described as a Japanese souffle. WIth all the familiar flavours of a traditional jaggery dessert, this rich, caramelised pudding is made with coconut milk, palm jaggery and egg yolk, and flavoured with cinnamon and lemongrass. A drizzle of caramel sauce completes the dish. With generous portions and a thoughtfully curated menu, You Mee offers well-executed Japanese elements alongside pan-Asian influences, as well as a tasty break from shopping.
