ED's conviction rate in PMLA cases over 92% in last 5 years: Official data

The conviction rate secured by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in money laundering cases over the last five years has been more than 92 per cent, an official data said. According to the data accessed by PTI, various special Prevention of Money Laundering Act ( PMLA ) courts delivered judgments in 41 cases registered under the said law between January 2020 and July 2025, out of which conviction orders were passed in 38 instances leading to the conviction of 98 accused. Hence, the conviction rate secured by the ED in money laundering cases over the last five years comes to 92.68 per cent (38/41X100) in about five years, they said. The ED has been regularly targeted by political parties in the opposition, claiming its actions were biased and that its conviction rate was "poor". Live Events A report prepared by the agency for the 2024-25 financial year said while the legal framework under the PMLA provides for a "structured mechanism" for prosecution, the timely completion of trials continued to face several "systemic" and "procedural" hurdles. The report released in May said a "primary challenge" in this context was that prosecution of money laundering cases was "intrinsically" linked to the progress of the investigation or trial of the corresponding predicate or primary offence. "Delays in those proceedings invariably impact the PMLA trial," the report said. According to the PMLA scheme, which came into force in 2005, the ED cannot register an independent case but has to base its complaint on a primary FIR of the police or any other investigating agency, which is called the predicate offence . The data also said the ED registered just over 5,063 money laundering cases over the same period (January 2020-July 2025) and the courts ordered confiscation of assets worth Rs 55.14 crore in the context of conviction cases. The courts also ordered confiscation of assets to the tune of Rs 15,558.21 crore under section 8(7) of PMLA (cases where trial cannot be conducted) during the same period.

Will be vacating official residence on time post retirement: CJI BR Gavai

Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on Thursday said due to time constraints he would not be able to find a suitable house by the time he retires in November and 'for sure vacate" his official residence within the time period allowed under the rules. Bidding farewell to outgoing Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, who is set to superannuate on August 9, the CJI at an event organised by Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCAORA) called him a 'warm person" who dedicated his career to the judiciary. Speaking to an audience comprising judges of the top court and high court aside from senior lawyers and their family members the CJI said Justice Dhulia would vacate his official residence, a day after his retirement. 'We will always remember his contribution to the judiciary. After retirement, he is going to be in Delhi, and he'll be one of the judges who will be vacating the house immediately. On the next day of his retirement," the CJI said. Interestingly, a month ago in an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court administration wrote to the Centre to vacate the official residence of the Chief Justice of India at Krishna Menon Marg in Delhi, noting former CJI DY Chandrachud had stayed beyond the permissible period. Earlier in August, however, Justice Chandrachud vacated the official residence of the head of the judiciary. When speakers lauded the verdict, Justice Dhulia said, 'Let me tell you I was not defending the Hijab. What I was defending was the choice of women to wear Hijab. If I have a judicial philosophy, then I can only say that my judicial philosophy is everything is around the human being. Everything which is for the benefit of a human being is my judicial philosophy." The outgoing judge lauded the contributions of advocates-on-record and asked them to gear up for 'their importance rises with the rise in litigation" and indicated that he would speak more on Friday, his last working day. In April, a bench headed by Justice Dhulia ruled Urdu language was born in this land and described it as the finest specimen of 'Ganga Jamuni tahzeeb". The bench said considering it a language of Muslims was a 'pitiable digression" from reality and unity in diversity. Justice Dhulia was born on August 10, 1960 and completed schooling in Dehradun, Allahabad and Lucknow. He was elevated as a permanent Judge of Uttarakhand High Court on November 1, 2008 and took oath as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on January 10, 2021 before being elevated to the top court on May 9, 2022. Imran Khan calls for another protest on Pakistans Independence Day

Lahore, Aug 7 (PTI) Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has given another protest call on the country's Independence Day next week, saying he will never bow before this 'Looters and Fools Alliance", apparently referring to the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party held a countrywide protest in connection with the 'Free Imran Khan Movement' on August 5, in which over 1,000 party workers and leaders were arrested. Khan, 72, was arrested on August 5, 2023, from his residence in Lahore after being convicted by a court in a corruption case. He has been incarcerated since his arrest due to conviction in other cases, and is being held at the Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. 'Our next defining moment is August 14; the day our forefathers freed this land from British rule. But while we gained independence from foreign rulers, we have yet to attain true freedom. As long as the constitution and rule of law are not restored, we cannot call ourselves a free nation," said a message posted on Khan's X account on Thursday. 'On this Independence Day, the entire nation must once again rise in full force against the fascism that grips our country," it added. 'We must liberate ourselves from this mafia and that requires sacrifice. I am enduring the worst prison conditions for the sake of my nation…In their failed attempts to break me, they have subjected my wife, Bushra Bibi, to inhumane conditions as well. Still, I continue to sacrifice for the supremacy of the constitution and the restoration of democracy," Khan's message said. Khan said that never in Pakistan's history, even during martial law imposed by past dictators, such blatant oppression was witnessed. 'What we are witnessing today evokes painful memories of the fall of Dhaka," Khan said. 'Let me make it clear that I will never bow before this 'Looters and Fools Alliance' and I will never accept the illegitimate 'Asim Law.' Even if I have to spend the rest of my life in prison, I am ready." Praising his supporters for turning out in large number on August 5 to express solidarity with him, Khan said: 'In the darkest era of tyranny and oppression, the massive turnout of the Pakistani people on the 5th of August to register their protest is not only commendable, but also a beacon of hope piercing through the darkness engulfing the nation." 'I urge all Pakistanis to shed the fear of prison. My special message to PTI leaders — remove all fear from your hearts, lead the people, and respond to the call of democracy," he said. Khan opposed the ongoing military operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying it was aimed at weakening his party, which is ruling the province, bordering Afghanistan. 'I have always maintained that military operations are never a solution. They only breed more terrorism, hatred, and destruction. No new military operation should be launched in the tribal areas. Their problems can only be resolved through dialogue with elected local representatives," he said. Khan also opposed the repatriation of Afghan nationals from Pakistan, saying that the inhumane expulsion of Afghans is deeply regrettable.
