Darby Allin picking up right where he left off could be cherry on top of AEW's Death Riders story

Darby Allin picking up right where he left off could be cherry on top of AEW's Death Riders story

Maybe Darby Allin didn't miss his chance after all.
Maybe the Death Riders story can spawn not one, but two babyface world champions whom AEW fans are super invested in.
I'll stand by my belief that Allin was the wrestler originally supposed to end Jon Moxley's reign as AEW World champion, especially if you look back at how the story started. He was a constant thorn in the Death Riders' side and was the one who approached Will Ospreay about taking up the cause with his fellow babyfaces.

Nevertheless, Allin broke his foot in March 2024 on the Dynamite just before he was supposed to climb Mount Everest, and had to postpone the climb. Allin, 32, missed about a month of action and then likely took himself off the board when it came to beating Moxley to leave and climb Everest.

AEW Superstar Undergoes Surgery

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. AEW star Buddy Matthews is set to be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. The House of Black member confirmed on Thursday that he is undergoing ankle surgery. In a post on his Instagram story, Matthews shared a photo of himself at a hospital. He was alongside his real-life partner, former WWE Women's World Champion Rhea Ripley, just before he went in for the procedure. Buddy Matthews is getting surgery to repair his ankle. Speedy recovery. — Andrew Ravens l (@Andrew_Ravens) August 7, 2025 A Sidelined House Of Black Member Matthews has been largely absent from AEW programming in recent weeks. This surgery now provides a legitimate reason for his time away from the ring as he begins his recovery. The specific nature of the ankle injury and a potential timetable for his return have not yet been disclosed. His absence further complicates the status of the House of Black faction, as fellow member Brody King has recently been competing in the AEW World Tag Team Title Eliminator Tournament with a new partner, Bandido. From "Best Kept Secret" to House Of Black Buddy Matthews has had a decorated career in both WWE and AEW. WWE fans will remember him from his time in NXT, where he was a one-time NXT Tag Team Champion. He later had a career-defining run on the 205 Live brand, where he was repackaged as "The Best Kept Secret" and had a dominant, critically acclaimed reign as the WWE Cruiserweight Champion. Courtesy of AEW More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match After his WWE release, he made his debut for AEW in 2022. He was revealed as the third member of the dark and mysterious faction, the House of Black, alongside Malakai Black and Brody King. An Uncertain Future The House of Black quickly became one of the most popular and dominant groups in AEW. Their biggest success came when they captured the AEW World Trios Championship and held the titles for a significant portion of 2023. This injury is an unfortunate setback for the talented Australian star. The wrestling world now wishes him a full and speedy recovery and awaits the eventual, and likely ominous, return of the full House of Black. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

Mercedes Moné set to return on AEW Dynamite as '8 Belts Moné' next week at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio. At All In: Texas, Toni Storm handed her the first loss of her AEW career in a match for the Women's World Championship. Moné beat Diana Strong to become the first-ever Prime Time Wrestling Women's Champion and the first BestYa Wrestling Women's Champion. Moné now holds eight championships across different promotions. The company confirmed her return during AEW Collision this week. She'll be back on Dynamite next Wednesday in Cleveland. After the announcement, Mercedes Moné took to X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, 'See y'all next week @AEW and you better say hello to your #CEO 8 Belts Moné.' WWE Consumer Pricing In 2026 Is Way Less Expensive Than You Think

WWE announced a five-year deal to air on ESPN DTC. But as WWE's already plum bank account continues to grow, some fans are worried about their own finances when it comes to viewing WWE content in 2026. Of course, WWE and ESPN's joint announcement was accompanied by social media uproar as many fans misinterpreted the cost of WWE PLEs once the promotion moves to ESPN DTC. How Much Will WWE Content Cost On ESPN DTC? 'In addition to ESPN DTC subscribers, fans that access ESPN through a traditional pay TV provider, e.g. Comcast, DirectTV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, will also have access to the new features through the enhanced ESPN App,' read an ESPN DTC fact sheet. The Total Cost of Watching WWE In 2026 Since the launch of WWE Network in 2014, WWE fans have become accustomed to paying $9.99 for PLEs. When WWE signed with Peacock, that price reduced to $4.99 per month before increasing to $7.99. The idea of having to pay an extra $29.99—a price point that will not apply to many viewers of ESPN DTC—sent some fans into a frenzy. In reality, the total monthly price of watching WWE programming is less than a WWE pay-per-view prior to April of 2014. It is also less than watching an AEW pay-per-view, which is typically priced at $49.99 or $7 per hour.
