Sunderland-wide anti-social behaviour hubs a step closer

BBC News5 hours ago
The creation of an anti-social behaviour (ASB) hub in every part of a city is a step closer after three new facilities were confirmed, a police force has said. The hub scheme is expanding to Hendon and Pennywell in Sunderland and Concord and Sulgrave in Washington after data showed higher levels of ASB there. It follows the project's success in Southwick, Hetton and the city centre, where ASB incidents dropped by up to a third, Sunderland City Council said.Deputy leader Kelly Chequer said the new hubs were expected to open in the late summer or in the autumn.
Ch Supt Mark Hall of Northumbria Police said: "Launching these additional hubs means we are one step closer to having hubs that cover every ward area in Sunderland."He said similar projects in other parts of the city had been "extremely successful".
The local authority said over the last year, incidences of ASB had dropped by about a third in the city centre and Southwick areas and by a fifth in the Hetton and Easington Lane hub area."Dozens of community protection notices, warnings and acceptable behaviour agreements have also been issued across the three areas," a council spokesman added.City council leader Michael Mordey urged people in the newly identified areas to get in touch about their ASB concerns."Residents have seen real benefits from these projects as the issues that matter to them most are tackled," Mordey added.
Each hub will have its own community officers, safety specialists and dedicated police support.

Paramedic jailed for spiking pregnant lover with abortion drug

A paramedic who tricked a woman into having an abortion by spiking her during sex has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Stephen Doohan, 33, was married when he met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship. In March 2023, the woman travelled to Edinburgh to see him after learning she was pregnant, the High Court in Glasgow heard. The court heard that Doohan inserted an abortion drug in her vagina without her knowledge during consensual sex on 17 March 2023. Doohan had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and depositing a drug into the woman's vagina causing her to abort, and depositing with intent to cause her to abort. On Monday at the High Court in Glasgow, he was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison. The court heard that Doohan convinced the woman to lie to medics at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary because he thought he would be arrested if she told the truth. The victim attended another regional hospital with her sister and was told that she was having a miscarriage. The court heard that in May 2023, the woman complained to the Scottish Ambulance Service, which launched an investigation. It revealed that on 14 March, the day the woman told Doohan she was pregnant, he used a work intranet to search for abortion drugs, the court was told. Police were then called in. Sentencing, judge Lord Colbeck said: 'You put her through considerable pain over a number of days, and left her facing a lifetime of pain and loss.' He also said Doohan caused 'long-term psychological injury' to his victim.

BREAKING NEWS Charges dropped against actor arrested on set of hit TV show Rivals

Charges have been dropped against an actor who was arrested while filming on the set of Rivals. Nigel Adams, 45, was arrested by Avon and Somerset Police at Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire on June 4. He was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm against his long-term partner Louise Payne in an incident on March 31 of this year. Mr Adams and Ms Payne attended Bristol Crown Court on Monday morning for a plea and trial preparation hearing. The actor, from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Christine Hart, prosecuting, said she would be offering no evidence against Mr Adams. Ms Hart said: 'Subsequent to the case being charged, there is a statement by Ms Payne. 'She is here at court today, she sits in the public gallery. 'She has made it clear she didn't wish to proceed with the case. I have spoken to her at length, as has the officer in charge. 'Taking into account the evidence already in the case and that statement, the only option I have is to offer no evidence on the outstanding count.' Judge William Hart told the court he would formally enter a not-guilty verdict in the case. The judge told Mr Adams: 'A not-guilty verdict, you are free to leave, thank you.' Mr Adams was arrested by officers from Avon and Somerset Police who attended the set of the Disney+ show in Gloucestershire on June 4. Rivals, starring David Tennant, Danny Dyer and Emily Atack, is based on the Dmae Jilly Cooper novel of the same name. Speaking outside court, Mr Adams and Ms Payne told the PA news agency they were grateful the case had been dropped. Mr Adams, describing his arrest, said: 'They turned up on set and nicked me like I was a wanted man on the run. 'Now I can get back with my agent and get back on Rivals, hopefully. I still have the costume.' He added: 'I'm grateful everything has been sorted. We just want to get on with our lives.' Mr Adams and Ms Payne have been engaged for seven years and are now looking forward to getting married. Ms Payne said: 'I didn't want to press charges from the beginning. I had to come to court to say I didn't want to go ahead with it. I'm happy it's all sorted.'

Evil Scots paramedic who secretly drugged lover with abortion pills to kill unborn baby jailed for 10 years

A PARAMEDIC who secretly gave a pregnant woman an abortion drug killing her unborn child has been jailed for 10 and a half years. Stephen Doohan had concocted the sick plan after she told him she was having his baby. 1 The 33 year-old - who was a Clinical Team Leader with the Scottish Ambulance Service - was married at the time. He crushed pills into a syringe before administering the medication as she lay on a bed at his home in Edinburgh's upmarket Grange area in 2023. Doohan gave her more of the drug days later. The woman soon fell ill which included fainting in the shower. It later emerged that she had sadly lost the baby as a result of what Doohan did. He had pleaded with her not to go police - and also tried to buy her silence with gifts. But, she eventually reported him to the Scottish Ambulance Service having recorded a conversation of him effectively confessing. Doohan was sentenced today at the High Court in Glasgow. He had pleaded guilty at a hearing in May to assault, sexual assault and another charge of causing the woman to have an abortion. Lord Colbeck also imposed a non-harassment order banning him from approaching or contacting the woman. Anti-abortion protesters risking £10k fine after snubbing new buffer zone on first day The court previously heard how Doohan had met the woman while on holiday in Spain in 2021. He had not said he was married and they remained in contact. In March 2023, the woman discovered she was pregnant with his baby. By this time, Doohan had temporarily separated from his wife and was living at a flat in Edinburgh. Days later, Doohan and the woman were involved in consensual sexual activity. He then went on to do something she could not see, but she was not "suspicious of his actions" at that time. This was the time he used the syringe. The next day, the woman began to suffer stomach cramps. They were then back at Doohan's flat and he gave her diazepam for the pain. The court heard she ended up in a "deep sleep", but awoke to find Doohan "initiating sexual contact". This tim,e she was suspicious of what he was then doing, but was also feeling the effects of the diazepam. Doohan later went to the toilet and the woman took the chance to peek under the mattress. Prosecutor Scott McKenzie explained: "She found a plastic syringe containing crushed tablets which had been pushed to the end of the syringe. "Next to the syringe were two white tablets that were in the shape of a star." The woman immediately checked online for an "abortion tablet". Mr McKenzie: "The search returned images that matched the tablet the woman had found." Doohan initially denied what he had done before sobbing claiming he was "scared". He also said he had got the tablets from a doctor, but insisted they would not "work" on the woman as it was the wrong dosage. The traumatised mum-to-be phoned a friend who urged her to go to the police. But, the woman initially had concerns for Doohan stating she did not want to "ruin" him if she was okay. She still, however, recorded a later conversation with him and it was then he confessed to intimately inserting the syringe, but stated he "could not go through with it". He did accept that "fragments" of the drug still may have ended up in the woman's system. The woman also discovered he had been researching abortion on the internet. She tried to keep the tablets and syringe as proof, but could not find them after she had gone to the bathroom. The woman then had to go to hospital on March 18 2023 due to the ongoing pain. Doohan went with her but pleaded that he would be arrested if she "told the truth" and instead was to claim the pills came from "a friend of a friend". Mr McKenzie: "Before speaking to medical staff, the woman and Doohan rehearsed what she was going to say. "The midwife recalled her being distressed and concerned about the baby. "Doohan appeared quiet and expressionless." The next day, the woman collapsed in the shower and had to return to hospital. She, this time, insisted Doohan did not come in the examination room. It was soon after that it emerged she had suffered a miscarriage. Sick Doohan then splashed out on various gifts including perfume, socks, money to get her hair done and football tickets to keep her quiet. Mr McKenzie: "He made reference to her not reporting him to the police before telling her: 'If they want to come and arrest me, I am in St John's Hospital in Livingston'." The last contact she had with Doohan was in late June 2023. The woman initially lodged a formal complaint with the Scottish Ambulance Service. She handed over screenshots of messages as well as the conversation she recorded. This information was soon passed to the police. But Mr McKenzie explained: "Doohan discovered that she had made the complaint and asked that she send over the details of what she submitted." During the probe, it was discovered Doohan had checked for medical information on the drug misoprostol the same day the woman told him she was expecting. The court heard misoprostol can be "administered for the purpose of managing a miscarriage or inducing a termination of pregnancy". Mr McKenzie said the woman has been "significantly affected" by her ordeal. The woman was back in court today to see Doohan sentenced. Lord Colbeck told Doohan: "You researched and planned what you did to your victim. "You used resources available to you as a paramedic before manipulating the woman and executing that plan under the guise of consensual sexual activity. "You left her in what can only be described as considerable pain and anguish over the prospect of losing her child before she did, in fact, do so." The judge stated that the emotional victim impact statement he had read "radiates with raw pain" suffered by the woman. He stated: "The offences committed by you, frankly, are almost as serious as any this court is ever asked to sentence." Doohan would have been jailed for 14 years, but for the guilty plea. Doohan, now of Kirkliston, near Edinburgh, had also faced an allegation of stealing misoprostol from the Scottish Ambulance Service in Edinburgh, but a not guilty plea was accepted. Mark Stewart KC, defending, said Doohan was "deeply sorry" for what he had done. The lawyer added he had issues at the time which affected his "judgement and decision making" although that did not excuse what happened. Doohan was also put on the sex offenders list.
