Gary Anderson finds second darts home as Flying Scotsman asks European Grand Prix fans to stop one thing

Daily Record04-05-2025

Anderson joked that he'll be back for the beer after going back to back at European Grand Prix
Glittering Gary Anderson reckons he's found a second darting home after going back-to-back at the European Darts Grand Prix.
But the Scotsman issued a word of warning to some in his German fan club about offering respect to all stars as they fire for glory.

Anderson stormed to a second-straight success in the Sindelfingen showpiece with a whitewash Final success over Andrew Gilding.

Having defeated Ross Smith in the 2024 showpiece, the 54-year-old destroyed Goldfinger 8-0 to clinch his second ranking title of the year.
Anderson was roared on by the locals and confessed: 'You know what, I'm a very proud Scotsman and I get a lot of support in Scotland. This has outdone them. This has been absolutely fantastic. It's been a long time since I've had so much support.
'Scotsmen playing all over the world, we get some, I can't say the word I'm going to say, but, no, fantastic.'
Asked about a desire to get back as soon as possible, he joked: 'Must be the beer!'
But the Scot did then have a serious word about whistling which has annoyed various players during recent events on the continent and in the UK.
Anderson said: 'Listen, what I've noticed, the fans that come to watch darts in Germany, Belgium, wherever you go, Austria, fantastic, but what you've got to remember, these boys are up here playing darts, right?

'You've got to support them all, whether you like them, whether you don't like them. Give them all the respect. They're up here trying to do a very hard game, and it is a hard game.
'So next time they come up here, no whistling. Give them all the support and I'll tell you what, they'll love you for it.'

Anderson came through Sunday with a scrappy quarter-final win over Martin Lukeman before a soaring semis success over Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Gilding was then wiped aside and he said: 'Can I retire now! No, it's been good. I've known Andrew for a long, long time. Very, very good player.
'Andrew will come along, he'll win something, have a few weeks off, come back and win the next thing.

'But to play Andrew, to play the boys that we're playing now, we've seen so many youngsters come through, 'Gian [van Veen], Luke Littler, Luke Humphriesand even just to play darts with these boys now, I'm still racking myself with it.
'Martin's another classy player who is going to be about for a long time, but the game was terrible. I never got going, he never got going and it was one of those games.
'Rob Cross, about 40,000 darts at double. It's one of these things, but if darts was easy, it'd be a boring game.'

It was Anderson's first stage title since winning last year's Euro Grand Prix and it sets him up for a strong summer.
He said: 'I'm just glad that I can still come and play darts with these boys that are playing now.
'You know, I've played 30 years. I've played with your Phil Taylors, your [Eric] Bristows, your Steve Beatons, all the players over the years. Some boys are gone now, but these youngsters that are coming up, darts is in a good place.

'We've got a lot of young Germans coming through, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English, Italians, French. Darts is going to be fantastic in the next five years.'

Liverpool star pushes for transfer exit ahead of imminent Florian Wirtz arrival

Liverpool are closing in on a club-record deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, but the German's arrival could spell the end for another of Arne Slot's players Federico Chiesa is set to push for a summer exit from Liverpool, with Florian Wirtz closing in on a move to Anfield. Chiesa joined the Reds last summer in a £10million deal from Juventus. But he has found his opportunities on Merseyside limited in the extreme. The Italian made just 14 appearances in all competitions, registering only two goals, with Arne Slot preferring Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo on the wings. ‌ Chiesa was handed just one Premier League start and even that only came in the penultimate game of the campaign, after Liverpool had wrapped up the title. The 27-year-old was generally seen as the sixth-choice attacking option by Slot. ‌ He could slip even further down the pecking order after Liverpool complete their business this summer. The Reds are pushing hard to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Wirtz in what would be a club record deal. They submitted an improved offer for the German on Saturday and an agreement is expected to be reached. That has placed Chiesa in a difficult position as bids to return to the Italy squad in time for next summer's World Cup. It is understood that with Wirtz on his way in, Chiesa is now looking to cut his stay with Liverpool short. The attacker's priority is on securing a move back to his native Italy. While he loves Liverpool as a club and city, his limited game time has become a serious issue. Several Serie A sides have already started talks and are seeking to be kept informed on any room for a deal. Chiesa's decision to seek an exit comes as somewhat of a U-turn from the 27-year-old. On Friday, he insisted he was happy on Merseyside and that he would be happy to remain with the Reds. ‌ He told Corriere dello Sport: 'The year is over. But it's an experience I would do again. Soon I will sit down at the table with the club, Fali (Ramadani, his agent) and my family to find the best solution. I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool at all. "You accept the choices as a professional and you move on. In the first few months there were many difficulties, if you think that I arrived in Liverpool on August 26 and found myself catapulted to another planet, with other teammates, without having trained with them. "At the beginning I felt the frustration of the radical change and of being far behind the group, then there was the injury. Could I start to discuss the choices of Slot who has always been very respectful towards me, as well as the club? The desire to play was there, I put it aside, I understood the situation." ‌ The news regarding Chiesa comes as Liverpool submitted an improved bid for Wirtz. The new offer is for £100m to be paid to Leverkusen upfront, with an extra £13m in add-ons. That is an improvement on the original £109m bid Liverpool submitted, with the Reds having no intention of agreeing to the £126.4m price tag Leverkusen have slapped on the playmaker.

Next Rangers Manager: Here are the latest odds as new favourite emerges for Ibrox hierarchy

Rangers are thought to be closing in on the appointment of their 20th permanent manager, with the Ibrox hierarchy said to be holding further talks with the main candidates this week. Russell Martin has agreed a deal in principle to become the next head coach of Rangers with an appointment expected before the weekend. The Scotsman understands that, barring any last minute hitches, the former Scotland international will become Philippe Clement's successor following more positive talks over the last 24 hours. It will mark a return to Ibrox for the 39-year-old ex-defender, who spent six months on loan at Rangers from Norwich City in the second half of the 2017-18 season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Martin has been one of the leading candidates throughout the recruitment process, which has accelerated this week following the completion of a takeover of the club by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. The search for a head coach has been spearheaded by newly-installed sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Greitar Steinsson, technical director for 49ers Enterprises. (Photo by Andrew Matthews/PA Wire) Davide Ancelotti had also been in the frame but talks between the new Rangers regime and the son of Carlo Ancelotti, who was his father's assistant at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton, appear to have broken down in recent days. Martin has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in December. He led Saints to promotion via the Championship play-offs last May but managed only one victory and 13 defeats in 16 Premier League matches. He has also previously managed Swansea City and MK Dons, where he became renowned for a possession-based brand of football. Martin will sign a three-year deal until June 2028 with long term assistant boss Matty Gill joining him at Ibrox, while former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross is also reportedly lined up for a coaching role. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Many Rangers fans have expressed dismay over Martin's imminent arrival but he has been backed to be a success at Ibrox by his former Norwich manager, Chris Hughton. (Photo by) | Getty Images Speaking on talkSPORT, Hughton said: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'
