Man Utd fan and Iceland boss Gunnlaugsson sad to see McTominay leave
Iceland head coach Arnar Gunnlaugsson wishes Scotland talisman Scott McTominay was still with Manchester United rather than making waves in Italy. The 52-year-old former Bolton, Leicester, Stoke and Dundee United forward is a Red Devils supporter and was disappointed to see attacking midfielder McTominay leave Old Trafford to join Napoli, where he starred in their Serie A title triumph over the past season. 'Scotland have some really good players, who have performed spectacularly well,' said Gunnlaugsson as he faced the media at Hampden Park ahead of Friday's friendly against Scotland. 'McTominay has performed really well in Naples. I am a United supporter and I am not too proud of that at the moment! I was really proud of him when he was playing for us (United). 'United is based on younger players coming through the ranks and progressing so it was difficult to see him go. 'Him going and doing that well in Naples, while we (United) didn't do so well in the league…that happens in football, so good for him. 'He showed his character and showed a new side to his game. Everyone knew he had goals in him. He's really difficult to handle in the box. 'That's something we need to be aware of because he times his runs so well from the midfield. Once a midfielder gets goals and assists, the value goes up and up. 'John McGinn is a big player for Aston Villa. Billy Gilmour, I really like him, he is good on the ball and his passing between the lines. Andy Robertson is a title-winning player with Liverpool. 'Some of them have had really good seasons and others maybe a bit harder but being proud Scotsmen I expect a really tough game tomorrow.' Gunnlaugsson had a six-month stint in Scotland with Dundee United in the 2002/03 season. 'I didn't play that many games, but I enjoyed the golf,' he smiled. 'I lived closed to St Andrews and Carnoustie was close by. I loved the atmosphere in the stadiums but when you play football, our time kind of reflects what you did on the pitch, and my performances weren't up to scratch. There were pluses and minuses.' Gunnlaugsson took charge of Iceland earlier this year and is hopeful of leading them back to the level of 2016, when they beat England on their way to the last eight of the European Championship in France. 'I feel like we are in the 2013-2014 moment, where the guys were really promising and they were developing into a really good team that kind of exploded in 2016 and followed up in the 2018 World Cup,' he said. 'I feel like we are three years before the big time. Hopefully, it won't be as long as three years. We are not there yet but we are close.' Scotland becomes the focus at the French Open as Jacob Fearnley and Cam Norrie set up Battle of Britain tennis clash
FRENEMIES Scotland becomes the focus at the French Open as Jacob Fearnley and Cam Norrie set up Battle of Britain tennis clash Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TWO Scotsmen will go head to head in the French Open for the first time ever when Cameron Norrie faces Jacob Fearnley on Super Saturday. Norrie, whose father is Scottish and Fearnley, from Edinburgh, both made it to the third round at Roland Garros. An all-British third-round clash will go ahead after the pair had interesting passages on day five in Paris. For the fourth time in five visits to Roland Garros, Norrie reached the third round, thanks this time to a 7-6 6-2 6-1 win over plucky lucky loser Federico Agustin Gomez from Argentina. A few hours later Fearnley broke new ground in his third match at major level, although he benefited from his opponent withdrawing hurt. Ugo Humbert, the No.22 seed, tripped over and fell awkwardly on the ground as he hit a double backhand in game eight of the second set. The Frenchman, 26, clutched his right calf and then hobbled backstage for medical treatment. Though he did return it was not for very long and after Fearnley delivered an ace in point one of the ninth game, Humbert retired hurt after one hour and 43 minutes, with the score 6-3 4-4 in the Scotsman's favour. It was not the way Fearnley would have wanted to progress but it sets up a brilliant clash and means someone will emulate Andy Murray, who got to the second week in 2017 when he made the semi-finals. For Norrie, playing in the second week of this major has so far eluded him but he is feeling confident about his chances of having his best fortnight at a foreign Slam. The 29-year-old has sunk to 81st in the world – he was 33 this time last year – and until the start of the clay-court campaign in April, he had been struggling to find a win. Rafa Nadal bursts into tears during his tennis farewell speech as three legends of the sport join him on courtv Yet he said: 'I feel like I'm improving as the years go on. 'Even how I'm adapting so quickly to playing on the clay. 'I've improved. It's a completely different mindset. Making the third round now, with another good opportunity. 'I'm happy to be through and enjoying my tennis again. I'm not going to change anything regardless of who I play. 'I feel like I have a really good game for the clay in general. 'I think it's down to whether I'm moving well and giving nothing away, like I did here. I can be really difficult to beat.' Sonay Kartal kickstarted what was billed as Thriller Thursday for the British contingent but she was out before lunchtime. Scotland's Ferguson ends injury nightmare with Bologna cup triumph
Scotland midfielder Ferguson has had to battle through a tough period after suffering a cruciate ligament tear in April, an injury which cost him a chance to play at Euro 2024 and a hefty chunk of this season. The 25-year-old, who returned to action in November, has also had to deal with other muscular injuries which have hampered his comeback, but fought back and was rewarded by leading Bologna to a historic victory as captain. Ferguson was again crucial on Wednesday night, with a typically classy and feisty performance at Rome's Stadio Olimpico before celebrating wildly with joyous teammates and tearful fans in the stands. He had to play much of the match with a bloody nose after clattering into Rafael Leao towards the end of the first half, and was forced to change a blood-stained shirt as Bologna defended their slender lead earned with Dan Ndoye's 53rd-minute strike. "Obviously I had a really serious injury and I had to work really hard for six, seven months. More even," Ferguson told reporters on Wednesday night. "Then when I got back I had to work even harder, then I got injured again, and then again. "It's been a really hard year, but I'm really happy to be here. We put in a historic performance tonight." Ferguson's Scotland teammate Scott McTominay has dominated the headlines as the star of a potentially Scudetto-winning Napoli team. But Ferguson is one of a clutch of Scotsmen to have already shone in Italy, blossoming since moving to the Mediterranean nation from Aberdeen in 2022 and becoming one of the stars of Bologna's recent resurgence. Making history He was key to Bologna qualifying for the modern Champions League for the first time last season -- discounting a brief stay in the old European Cup back in 1964 -- and in late 2023 overtook Denis Law as the highest-scoring Scot in Serie A history. A poor league phase campaign in Europe's top club competition put a downer on the first half of Bologna's first season under coach Vincenzo Italiano. But things began to click at the tail end of their failed continental campaign, with their win over Borussia Dortmund in January -- their first ever in the Champions League -- being celebrated like they'd won a trophy. Since then, Bologna have gone from strength to strength -- they're still in the hunt for next season's Champions League and are now cup winners. "In the three years since I've been here we've grown a lot, every year we improve our level of play and the way we work," said Ferguson. "Last year we made a records points total, we made history by getting into the Champions League and now we've made history again." Ferguson has come a long way since his last cup final, lost to Celtic in his debut season in the Aberdeen first team back in 2018. "This morning I watched that match to remind myself how I felt... I used it to motivate me for tonight," said Ferguson. Bologna have two matches left in their Serie A campaign to reach the Champions League, with two points separating them from fourth-placed Juventus ahead of fixtures with Fiorentina and Genoa.

Gary Anderson finds second darts home as Flying Scotsman asks European Grand Prix fans to stop one thing
Anderson joked that he'll be back for the beer after going back to back at European Grand Prix Glittering Gary Anderson reckons he's found a second darting home after going back-to-back at the European Darts Grand Prix. But the Scotsman issued a word of warning to some in his German fan club about offering respect to all stars as they fire for glory. Anderson stormed to a second-straight success in the Sindelfingen showpiece with a whitewash Final success over Andrew Gilding. Having defeated Ross Smith in the 2024 showpiece, the 54-year-old destroyed Goldfinger 8-0 to clinch his second ranking title of the year. Anderson was roared on by the locals and confessed: 'You know what, I'm a very proud Scotsman and I get a lot of support in Scotland. This has outdone them. This has been absolutely fantastic. It's been a long time since I've had so much support. 'Scotsmen playing all over the world, we get some, I can't say the word I'm going to say, but, no, fantastic.' Asked about a desire to get back as soon as possible, he joked: 'Must be the beer!' But the Scot did then have a serious word about whistling which has annoyed various players during recent events on the continent and in the UK. Anderson said: 'Listen, what I've noticed, the fans that come to watch darts in Germany, Belgium, wherever you go, Austria, fantastic, but what you've got to remember, these boys are up here playing darts, right? 'You've got to support them all, whether you like them, whether you don't like them. Give them all the respect. They're up here trying to do a very hard game, and it is a hard game. 'So next time they come up here, no whistling. Give them all the support and I'll tell you what, they'll love you for it.' Anderson came through Sunday with a scrappy quarter-final win over Martin Lukeman before a soaring semis success over Dirk van Duijvenbode. Gilding was then wiped aside and he said: 'Can I retire now! No, it's been good. I've known Andrew for a long, long time. Very, very good player. 'Andrew will come along, he'll win something, have a few weeks off, come back and win the next thing. 'But to play Andrew, to play the boys that we're playing now, we've seen so many youngsters come through, 'Gian [van Veen], Luke Littler, Luke Humphriesand even just to play darts with these boys now, I'm still racking myself with it. 'Martin's another classy player who is going to be about for a long time, but the game was terrible. I never got going, he never got going and it was one of those games. 'Rob Cross, about 40,000 darts at double. It's one of these things, but if darts was easy, it'd be a boring game.' It was Anderson's first stage title since winning last year's Euro Grand Prix and it sets him up for a strong summer. He said: 'I'm just glad that I can still come and play darts with these boys that are playing now. 'You know, I've played 30 years. I've played with your Phil Taylors, your [Eric] Bristows, your Steve Beatons, all the players over the years. Some boys are gone now, but these youngsters that are coming up, darts is in a good place. 'We've got a lot of young Germans coming through, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English, Italians, French. Darts is going to be fantastic in the next five years.'
