New alterations shop to bring a tailored touch to Inverurie

A new alterations shop is hoping to stitch itself into the heart of Inverurie.
Anca Mazhari has opened Thistle Alterations in Falconer Court on North Street.
The shop, which offers dry cleaning, laundry and clothing alterations, is the second location for Anca, who already operates a successful branch in Aberdeen.
Anca, who has six staff members, decided to open the shop after realising there was a 'big demand' in the area for her services.
The 38-year-old, and husband Amir, spent months looking for the perfect location.
She said: 'We saw there was a big demand but no alteration shop whatsoever in Inverurie.
'My husband and I had been driving for months, twice a week to look for premises.
'We wanted to do Inverurie because we actually get a lot of customers in the Aberdeen shop from Inverurie.'
Anca, who also runs Thistle Alterations in Aberdeen's Chapel Street, spent four months renovating her new premises, which was formerly Altro Designerwear.
She said: 'My husband and I did most of the work.
'It was a lot of late nights with 3am finishes, commuting back and forth from Aberdeen.
'But it's worth it as we really wanted to make this happen.'
Thistle Alterations opened its doors last week and Anca, mum to Aydin, has been overwhelmed by the support.
She said: 'It's been fantastic.
'There's been more people than we expected. Everyone has been so friendly and supportive.
'We've been non-stop.'
Anca, who has owned her Aberdeen shop for five years, got a surprise earlier this year when Dragons Den star Steven Bartlett booked an appointment at her shop.
The Diary of a CEO podcaster needed his suit trousers altered.
Calling it a 'memorable experience' and a 'privilege to assist him', Anca said he was 'just like a normal person'.
In November 2021, they helped fix the dress of singer Leona Lewis, who was in Aberdeen as the support act for Gary Barlow at P&J Live.

Rupee slips; S&P upgrade lends a lifeline ahead of Trump-Putin meet

MUMBAI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee declined on Thursday with traders treading lightly ahead of the Trump-Putin summit, although S&P's upgrade offered a silver lining. The rupee closed at 87.5500 against the U.S. dollar, softer than Wednesday's close of 87.4400, navigating a choppy session that saw it swing between 87.39 and 87.67. With the focus squarely on the Trump-Putin meet, the S&P's upgrade of India offered a boost to the local currency right when it was grappling with midday pressure. S&P noted that India's robust external position is a key credit strength. It highlighted that current account deficits are likely to remain small over the next few years, while domestic demand stabilises and a weaker rupee boosts competitiveness. The agency further pointed to the rupee's active trading status, noting it accounts for more than 1% of global foreign exchange turnover. "In the shorter term, we may see some relief on the ratings upgrade, but the rupee is still not out of the woods as trade uncertainties persist and broad economic indicators are still weak," said Dilip Parmar, currency analyst at HDFC Securities. The Trump-Putin meeting to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war holds added significance for the rupee. The U.S. president has criticised India's purchase of Russian oil and imposed an extra 25% tariff on its goods effective August 27, doubling the rate to 50% - the highest U.S. tariff on a country alongside Brazil. The currency unit touched 87.8850 last week after Trump's tariffs salvo, with the Reserve Bank of India stepping in to prevent the rupee from breaching the all-time low of 87.95 - a level bankers believe the central bank will continue to defend. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index was up 0.1% at 97.835 at 1550 IST.

TSX slips as hot US inflation data clouds Fed rate cut hopes

Aug 14 (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index edged down on Thursday, led by declines in industrials and technology shares, as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data undermined interest rate cut hopes. At 9:50 a.m. ET (1340 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index (.GSPTSE), opens new tab was down 0.34% at 27,899.62 points. The move follows the index's record close in the previous session. On the day, Toronto's industrials (.GSPTTIN), opens new tab and the technology sub-indexes (.SPTTTK), opens new tab led losses, falling more than 1% each. Wall Street also declined, with the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab falling 0.1%, after the U.S. producer prices data increased more than expected in July amid a surge in the costs of services and goods, suggesting a broader pickup in inflation in the months ahead. "Given how benign the CPI numbers were on Tuesday, this is a most unwelcome surprise to the upside and is likely to unwind some of the optimism of a "guaranteed" rate cut next month," Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Northlight Asset Management, said in a note. Despite the data undercutting September rate cut expectations by the U.S. Federal Reserve, traders continued to price in a 25-basis-point cut next month, with odds standing at 92.5%, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool. Separately, the U.S. jobless claims fell last week amid low layoffs. Heavyweight energy index (.SPTTEN), opens new tab lost 0.5%. Oil markets braced for the upcoming U.S.-Russia summit on Friday amid U.S. President Donald Trump's warning of "severe consequences" for Moscow if it does not agree to end its war in Ukraine. The healthcare (.GSPTTHC), opens new tab, however, surged 1.6% after a minor fall in the previous session, with the sector heavyweight Bausch Health ( opens new tab jumping 4.5%. Among earnings-related moves, Bird Construction ( opens new tab dropped 11.7% after its second-quarter profit fell short of Street expectations. The stock was the biggest loser on the main index.

S&P lifts India's rating to BBB in first upgrade since 2007

MUMBAI, Aug 14 (Reuters) - S&P Global Ratings on Thursday upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', the first upgrade in 18 years, citing strong economic growth, improved monetary policy credibility, and sustained fiscal consolidation. Fitch has rated India at 'BBB-' since 2006 while Moody's has had a 'Baa3' rating in place since June 2020. The upgrade follows S&P's decision in May 2024 to revise India's outlook to positive from stable, driven by robust growth and better quality of government spending. S&P said it expects the impact of U.S. tariffs on the Indian economy to be manageable due to its limited reliance on trade and the dominance of domestic demand in its economy. India faces the prospect of a 50% tariff on exports to the U.S. after President Donald Trump doubled the levy citing New Delhi's oil purchases from Russia, which numerous other countries have imposed sanctions on after its invasion of Ukraine. "The upgrade of India reflects its buoyant economic growth, against the backdrop of an enhanced monetary policy environment that anchors inflationary expectations," S&P said. India's real GDP growth averaged 8.8% between fiscal 2022 and 2024, the highest in Asia-Pacific, and is projected to grow at 6.8% annually over the next three years. S&P said this momentum was helping moderate the government's debt-to-GDP ratio despite wide fiscal deficits. The finance ministry welcomed S&P's move and said India will continue its buoyant growth momentum and undertake steps for further reforms to become a developed economy by 2047. S&P also raised its transfer and convertibility assessment to 'A-' from 'BBB+', reflecting improved external resilience. S&P expects India's debt-to-GDP ratio to decline to 78% by fiscal year 2029, from 83% in fiscal 2025. The country's fiscal year runs April-March. The Indian rupee strengthened to 87.58 per dollar from 87.66, while the benchmark 10-year bond yield fell 7 basis points to 6.38% following the announcement. "The S&P upgrade comes as music for debt markets and also a good news given that it comes after the U.S. president terming the Indian economy 'dead'," said Aishvarya Dadheech, chief investment officer at Fident Asset Management. "This will boost debt inflows and ease worries over the long-duration bond rally faltering due to dwindling demand from banks," he added. Risks to the rating include a weakening of political commitment to fiscal consolidation or a structural slowdown in economic growth that undermines debt sustainability, S&P said. Any shift in India's oil supplies away from Russia, if fully borne by the government, will have a modest impact on government finances given the narrow price differential between Russian crude and current international benchmarks, S&P said. Conversely, further upgrades are possible if fiscal deficits narrow significantly, bringing the net change in general government debt below 6% of GDP on a sustained basis, it added. India's Economic Affairs Secretary Anuradha Thakur said she expects other rating agencies to also take note of the factors that have led to the upgrade and follow suit.
