Former CNN Center marks construction progress and new arts initiative, signaling continued evolution of iconic downtown destination
ATLANTA, July 29, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--One year out from the FIFA World Cup 2026, CP Group, a vertically-integrated commercial real estate investment and management firm, has announced upcoming construction milestones at The Center in Downtown Atlanta. Since unveiling its rebrand and redevelopment plans in April 2024, CP Group has been executing its multi-phase repositioning of the iconic 1.2 million-square-foot, mixed-use landmark. The transformation aims to establish The Center as a year-round destination and hub for retail, dining, content creation, entertainment, business, and community-centered programming.
Construction is currently underway on a new exterior arrival experience, activated entryways, and permanent art installations, all expected to be completed by the end of this year. A revitalized ground-floor atrium will follow in early 2026, just in time to welcome the spectators traveling across the globe to Atlanta for the city's first World Cup Game on June 15, 2026.
The Center also recently debuted the first of three digital LED signs, each spanning 12 stories on the building's exterior, providing advertising opportunities to businesses and individuals seeking exposure to the high volume of foot traffic that the area around The Center, State Farm Arena, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium experiences.
"The next iteration of this historic building will be multifaceted — encompassing global entertainment, best-in-class retail, and elevated dining options, but most importantly, providing an experiential hub of cultural and community-centered activity," said Chris Eachus, Founding Partner at CP Group. "Hosting Club World Cup watch parties, providing a platform for local artists, and supporting brand activation and film production opportunities are all ways we hope to engage Atlanta residents and catalyze the downtown experience."
CP Group, in partnership with ASHA Advisory, a community-focused arts and culture advisory led by Neda Abghari, has also launched CTR Culture, a transformative platform dedicated to arts, culture, and creative community storytelling at The Center. As part of the platform's inaugural campaign, CP Group and ASHA will be offering a limited number of Media Placement Grants to local artists, cultural presenters, and nonprofits. These grants provide selected creators with unprecedented access to high-profile ad space within the digital signage outside The Center's main entryways and exposure to thousands of daily passersby. This opportunity also offers potential exposure to national broadcast media during major events at neighboring venues, including the Club World Cup games. ASHA is accepting artist applications now through August 31.
The arts-driven initiative is part of a greater collaboration between CP Group and The Center with Abghari, Bem Joiner, and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to curate exceptional statement artworks which will help establish The Center's identity and soon-to-be iconic sense of place in Atlanta's vibrant downtown landscape.
Located at the heart of Atlanta's Central Business District, The Center is directly connected to State Farm Arena, home of NBA's Atlanta Hawks, and adjacent to the fourth largest convention center in the United States, the Georgia World Congress Center, and Centennial Olympic Park, serving as Georgia's legacy of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and a year-round destination for locals and visitors. Those facilities and the nearby Mercedes-Benz Stadium attract over 12 million visitors annually.
The project currently includes the Omni Atlanta Hotel within its site and boasts an array of prominent cultural sites and institutions within walking distance, including the World of Coca-Cola, the Children's Museum of Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium, the College Football Hall of Fame Museum, and the Center for Civil & Human Rights.
CP Group has tapped global real estate investment manager Hines to lead both the short- and long-term retail leasing opportunities now available at The Center. To inquire about a tour, leasing availability, production studio space, event activations and more, please reach out to Nick Garzia (nick.garzia@hines.com) or Starr Cumming (starr.cumming@hines.com). For office leasing, contact CBRE's Nicole Goldsmith (Nicole.goldsmith@cbre.com) or Jeff Keppen (jeff.keppen@cbre.com).

JFK airport's $9.5 billion international terminal is taking shape. See what's inside

It's far from finished but the new, $9.5 billion Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy International Airport is taking shape. Its first phase is slated to open in mid-2026. It will replace the current terminal, which opened in 1998. The terminal, which will be JFK's largest, is now weathertight. Winding baggage conveyor belt structures have been installed, and you can make out future ticket counters, where customers flying carriers like Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Etihad Airways, Air China, Taiwan's China Airlines and others will set down their luggage and show their passports to ticket agents. The terminal — set to be roughly twice the size of the two LaGuardia Airport terminals that opened in the past decade combined — will be dedicated solely to international travelers, which the developers said is key to the design. "From the very first pen to paper … we had the international customer in mind," Jennifer Aument, CEO of the New Terminal One, the company developing the project, said at a press conference at the airport last month. CNBC and other media got a look at the construction progress, led by Aument, in early July as part of what the company said will likely be among the last hardhat tours of the facility before opening day. The project is part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's $19 billion overhaul of JFK. In addition to Terminal 1, the current Terminal 7, currently home to Alaska Airlines and Ireland's Aer Lingus, will be knocked down for a new Terminal 6, whose first gates are set to open next year. LaGuardia Airport's revamp, in comparison, was about $8 billion. As air traffic grows, airports around the country are racing to replace aging infrastructure. U.S. airports need at least $173.9 billion for infrastructure upgrades from this year through 2029, according to a report earlier this year by the Airport Council International-North America. "These investments – averaging nearly $35 billion annually – are essential to accommodate airlines and passengers, improve operational efficiency, elevate service quality and customer experience, and fulfill airport resiliency needs," it said. The new JFK Terminal 1 is set to open around the start of the 2026 World Cup, when some games will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, about 30 miles away. More than half of the airlines at JFK are changing terminals in the coming years because of the construction, Aument said. One thing she pointed to with the new design: "a terminal flooded with light." That means no basement customs lines. The departures hall, security lanes and customs will be on the same level of the three-floor terminal, which features a wall of slanted windows. Its design, led by architecture firm Gensler, is supposed to conjure the image of a butterfly, with the body splitting the terminal down the middle. The AirTrain, which connects the airport's terminals and parking lots with train stations in Queens, is already running through the construction site and will stop at the terminal when the facility opens. JFK's overhaul also includes roadway improvements around the airport, where traffic has crawled around the biggest hub in the region for years. Terminal 1's mid-2026 open will include the departure and arrival areas and the first 14 gates, all capable of receiving wide-body aircraft that are used for long-haul flights, and will have a capacity for 14 million passengers a year. There will be 23 gates — 22 wide-body gates and one narrow-body gate — for planes like an Airbus A320 or a Boeing 737s — when the rest of the project is complete, currently scheduled for 2030. The final version of Terminal 1 will also have more than 300,000 square feet of dining, retail, lounge and recreational space, with more than half, 180,000 square feet, just for retail and dining. Aument said the airport will be the only one in the U.S. with a cash-and-carry duty-free shopping. Generally, customers will make duty-free purchases that are then returned to them before they board their flights, but in this format, they can take them right away. The new terminal will also have its own microgrid, with solar panels on the roof, that the developer said will enable the facility to have "full resiliency and maintenance of 100% [of the terminal's] operations in the event of power disruptions."

USMNT's Matt Turner seals return to New England Revolution on loan

The New England Revolution have brought back U.S. men's national team goalkeeper Matt Turner on loan from Lyon with an option to buy, the MLS club announced on Friday. Turner, the U.S.'s starter at the 2022 World Cup, will fill a designated player spot for the remainder of 2025 for budget purposes, with plans to convert him to a targeted allocation money (TAM) player in 2026. The loan runs until June and the start of the 2026 World Cup that will be staged in North America. To keep the 31-year-old TAM-eligible beyond the loan, any purchase option would have to be significantly less than the €8 million (£6.74m; $9.13m) Lyon agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Turner in June. Advertisement 'It is a privilege to return to the club that launched my career,' Turner said in a statement. 'The club that helped me discover who I am as a professional, the club that has always felt like a home away from home. To have the chance to play in front of the Revolution supporters once again is a priceless feeling and one I've never taken for granted. My family and I have felt their unwavering support throughout these last three years, and I can't wait to wear the Revolution crest again at Gillette Stadium. I am grateful for this opportunity to earn my place on the field and look forward to winning many more games with the Revolution.' As for his parent club, Lyon have faced major financial difficulties in recent months. The Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG — the body responsible for overseeing the finances of French football clubs) issued Lyon an administrative relegation to Ligue 2 on June 24 following a review of the club's finances, before they successfully appealed that decision two weeks later. Lyon had been provisionally relegated in December and banned from making any transfers in the winter window. Brazil international Lucas Perri was Lyon's No 1 last season, starting all but one of their Ligue 1 games. Perri has since joined newly-promoted Premier League side Leeds United. Turner previously spent seven seasons with New England, winning the starting job in 2018 and establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in MLS before eventually moving to Arsenal in 2022, where he played only seven times before joining Forest. The American was Forest's starter for the first half of the 2023-24 campaign before being displaced by Matz Sels. Turner was loaned to Crystal Palace for the 2024-25 season and made four appearances as a back-up to Dean Henderson. He featured in three of Palace's FA Cup games in their run to lifting the trophy for the first time in history, but was an unused substitute in the 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final. Advertisement 'I look forward to welcoming Matt back to the Revolution and I am excited for this opportunity to work with one of the best goalkeepers our league has produced,' Revolution manager Caleb Porter said in a statement. 'Matt holds himself to an extremely high standard that has led him to success at the international level, in Europe, and of course, in MLS. Matt's shot-stopping quality and overall character and mentality make him a tremendous addition to our goalkeeping corps.' The move back to MLS comes at an important time for Turner, who lost his starting job with the U.S. men's national team this summer at the Gold Cup. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino made it clear to Turner that he needed to play regularly in order to earn back his starting job. New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese started for the U.S. at the Gold Cup. Turner had been the consistent No 1 for the U.S. since beating out Zack Steffen for the job ahead of the Qatar World Cup in 2022. His lack of minutes in Europe, though, eventually took its toll. The U.S. goalkeeper depth chart is thin, however, and if Turner gets consistent minutes in MLS, he'll be the favorite to win the job back.
