Meillard wins slalom and closes in on discipline leader Kristoffersen
Twice world champion Loic Meillard of Switzerland made it two wins from two weekend races in Norway and now has the chance to claim the slalom World Cup title at the season ender in the United States.
The day after topping the giant slalom in Hafjell, Meillard was unstoppable again in the slalom on Sunday he won .21 of a second ahead of Atle Lie McGrath of Norway and .47 clear Lucas Braathen Pinheiro, also a Norwegian who competes for Brazil.
"It's a dream for a tech skiers to win both days, GS and Slalom, and for it to happen this weekend, it's pretty amazing," Meillard said.
Another Norwegian, Henrik Kristoffersen, could have clinched the discipline title but had to settle for fifth.
He is now just 47 points ahead of slalom and team combined world champion Meillard, with Frenchman Noel Clement also in the race 86 points back.
The final slalom is on March 27 at the American venue of Sun Valley, with 100 points up for grabs for the winner and only the top 15 getting points.
"It's still a big gap, so he (Kristoffersen) has to fail a little bit and I have to do something pretty special like today," Meillard said.
"It's going to be a nice fight until the end...We'll see with jetlag how it goes."
Meillard has a chance to complete a Swiss sweep of all men's World Cup titles. Marco Odermatt has clinched the overall, super-g and giant slalom trophies, and is competing with team-mate Franjo von Allmen for the downhill title.
The World Cup finals in Sun Valley start on Saturday with the men's and women's downhills.

The younger brother of 19-times-capped Aussie international Jordan Bos, who plys his trade in nearby Belgium, pushes the number of Aussies in Germany's top footballing flight to three. The million Celtic wingers linked with a transfer to the champions rated and slated
Brendan Rodgers famously quipped about having a million wingers during his first spell in charge at Celtic. The Hoops boss has had a fair few in his second stint but all of a sudden wide men are thin on the ground at Parkhead. Advertisement Star man Jota is out of commission until 2026, Luis Palma looks to be on his way out and there are still questions whether Yang Hyun-jun has what it takes to cut it at the club. Advertisement It's no wonder Rodgers is looking to strengthen in the wide areas – and has cast his net far and wide. There might not be a million of them yet, but the Hoops are in the hunt for plenty and here are the names who have shot to the top of the wishlist. Record Sport rates and slates them here... Benjamin Nygren The Nordsjaelland wide man is a hot property in Denmark after an impressive season and breakout performances for the Sweden national side. The 23-year-old was a sensation as a teenager when he burst on to the scene at IFK Goteborg but his big move to Genk didn't quick spark and he spent a couple of seasons in Holland. Advertisement Nygren is heading into the final six months of his contract and could be picked up for a bargain £2million – although there is interest elsewhere. Michel-Ange Balikwisha The Royal Antwerp attacker was a target last summer before injury halted the move but he remains on the watch list. At 24-year-old, he's got bags of experience in Belgian having previously been at Standard Liege and was a regular for the Red Devils at under 21 level. Michel-Ange Balikwisha in action for Royal Antwerp Balikwisha is heading into the final year of his contract and while Antwerp might be looking for up to £5m, Celts might be able to land him for less. Sondre Orjasaeter The Norwegian under 21 cap came close to joining Celts in January but felt he wasn't ready to make the jump from Sarpsborg. Norway's Sondre Holmlund Orjasaeter -Credit:NTB/AFP via Getty Images Orjasaeter wouldn't come cheap though. Celtic's £4m bid was bounced in January and Sarpsborg are looking to bank up to £7m after a solid start to the season in Norway. Nilson Angulo Celtic scouts have clearly been busy in Belgium land the Anderlecht attacker is another one on the wishlist. The Ecuador international – who turns 22 this month – has been attracting attention from all over Europe after an impressive display against Brazil last week. Advertisement It's thought he could be secured for around £3m – but it would depend on interest from elsewhere. Raul Moro Celtic have been watching the Real Valladolid prospect for a while – but they are not the only ones. Moro was a stand out for the La Liga side during a tough season when they went down and they are looking to cash in. Nottingham Forest are also thought to be in the hunt, along with Bournemouth and several sides in his homeland.

World Cup Boat Party Canceled After DHS, Coast Guard Operation
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A floating soccer World Cup party attended by the mayor of Miami-Dade County and FIFA officials was canceled after a federal immigration agent joined a Coast Guard inspection of the boat in Miami's Biscayne Bay on Wednesday night. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, a Democrat, told Newsweek that the party "had to be abruptly canceled due to a joint operation with Homeland Security and the Coast Guard," adding that the incident was "deeply troubling" and something that "should not have happened." A Coast Guard spokesperson told the Miami Herald that a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent was part of the team that boarded the vessel, the Barefoot Princess, but said it was a routine inspection and "not a targeted immigration thing." However, some attendees reported that crew members on the vessel had been asked for identification and proof of their immigration status. Newsweek has contacted the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard and FIFA for comment via email. Beau Ferrari and Marc Anthony unveil the FIFA World Cup Miami Countdown Clock during the FIFA World Cup One Year Out Celebration at Perez Art Museum Miami on June 11, 2025 in Miami, It Matters Miami is among the 16 cities across the U.S, Canada and Mexico that will be hosting the soccer World Cup from June 11 to July 19 next year. Wednesday's incident adds to concerns about how safe fans will feel traveling to the city for the tournament amid President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. Miami-Dade County is investing at least $40 million into the tournament, with leaders hopeful that a surge in tourism will justify the cost. What To Know The party was hosted by Telemundo to celebrate the 2026 World Cup being a year away. A spokesperson for Telemundo confirmed to Newsweek that it canceled its "One Year to Go" event after "delays caused by a routine Coast Guard inspection." Levine Cava said she was not made aware of the operation beforehand, and that she was informed by organizers that the event was being canceled. The incident was first reported on social media by Thomas Kennedy, of the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Kennedy told Newsweek that several attendees had told him that staff on the boat had been asked by agents to show identification and proof of their immigration status. Lt. Nicolina Converso, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard's Seventh District, told the Herald that no action was taken from the inspection aside from citations for safety violations against the vessel. Coast Guard spokesperson Chief Petty Officer Nicole Groll told the newspaper that it was standard procedure for the Coast Guard to run background checks on the crew operating a commercial vessel and ask for identification from all crew members. Asked if crew members were asked about their citizenship, Groll said she "can't say which words were said" but added that "this was not a targeted immigration thing." Groll said the inspection "had nothing to do with the event that was happening onboard" and "everything to do with the operations and safety of the people onboard" and "to make sure the business that was this boat was operating legally and safely." What People Are Saying Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a statement to Newsweek: "As our county marks one year out from the World Cup 2026 being hosted in Miami-Dade, events have been scheduled to commemorate this milestone including one hosted yesterday by Telemundo that I was invited to attend. Unfortunately, at a time our community should have been celebrating, the event had to be abruptly canceled due to a joint operation with Homeland Security and the Coast Guard. As a guest, I was not made aware of this operation beforehand; we were informed by event organizers that the event was being canceled." Levine Cava added: "Miami-Dade is a globally recognized community that is proud to welcome visitors from around the world. This incident is deeply troubling as it can cause a chilling effect for visitors to continue feeling safe and welcomed in our community, particularly as we prepare for the World Cup next year—an event that is expected to have a historic impact on our local economy. We urge a thorough review by DHS and the Coast Guard of these protocols, as this should not have happened. Ensuring that all community members feel safe and included is crucial to maintaining our county's reputation as a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors." A Telemundo spokesperson told Newsweek: "Due to delays caused by a routine Coast Guard inspection, Telemundo canceled its One Year To Go celebration event in Miami [on Wednesday]. We regret the inconvenience to our guests and appreciate their understanding. We look forward to continuing the road to the FIFA World Cup 26 and bringing this historic tournament to our viewers." What's Next Levine Cava has called for the Department of Homeland Security and the Coast to conduct a "thorough review" of their protocols. Miami will host seven World Cup matches next year, starting on June 15, 2026.
