Two dead, 32 injured after monkeys break electric wire triggering stampede at Avsaneshwar temple in UP's Barabanki temple
Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village under the Lonikatra police station area and another 30-year-old devotee succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said.
This comes a day after eight people were killed in a stampede that broke out during a rush of pilgrims along a stair route leading to the Mansa Devi temple on a hilltop in Haridwar. Rumours of an electric current where the stairs begin triggered panic among people, leading to the stampede, according to the police.
A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition.
Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries.
Following the incident, there was chaos in the temple and surrounding areas. District and police officials reached the spot and are working to manage the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said that during the 'jalabhishek' ritual, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex.
The resulting panic led to a stampede in which two people lost their lives and more than two dozens were injured, he added.
Devotees later resumed their worship at the temple.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed 'deep sorrow' over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
'He has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations,' Adityanath's office posted on X in Hindi.
'He has prayed to Lord Mahadev, the supreme deity, to grant salvation to the departed souls and a speedy recovery to the injured,' it added.

The Delhi high court has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to constitute a committee for redressing the grievances of candidates who lose time in competitive exams, due to technical issues. (File Photo) The direction was issued by justice Vikas Mahajan on Monday while dealing with a plea filed by a NEET UG candidate seeking compensatory marks in the medical entrance exam, asserting that he was subjected to interruptions and harassment mid examination for re-verification of his identity credentials. In his petition, the candidate claimed that the technical glitches in the biometric verification delayed his entry to the exam hall and was later asked to again step out for biometric verification mid-exam, submitting applications in English and Hindi. It went on to add that despite loss of time, the examination authorities did not give him compensatory time. The NTA, represented by advocate Sanjay Khanna, opposed the petition asserting that the candidate had reached 14 minutes after the commencement of the exam process and the glitch could not be attributed to it since the candidate had himself locked the biometric verification and the verification could not be completed despite three attempts. He further submitted that the examination authority's action of contacting the candidate mid exam was a part of the general procedure and he could thus not seek advantage of the same. Consequently, the court after viewing the CCTV footage to ascertain the time lost, directed the NTA to award him grace marks. It noted that the examination authorities could not justify interrupting the candidate during the exam, especially when he had already agreed to take responsibility for any biometric discrepancies. 'This court finds that the petitioner having evidently suffered a loss of time amounting to 03 minutes and 32 seconds, during the exam due to no fault of his own, deserves to be compensated,' the court noted. Noting multiple instances where candidates lost exam time through no fault of their own, Justice Mahajan, in a 23-page order, directed the NTA to set up a committee saying, 'This Court has come across a few individual cases where the candidates suffered loss of exam time for the reason not attributable to them. Constitutional courts cannot be expected to view CCTV footage, like in the present case, for each such candidate who has been prejudiced on account of loss of exam time for no fault of his. Such cases ought to be examined by a body of experts in a transparent and fair manner which would carry out the exercise undertaken by this court in the present case.' It added, 'Accordingly, the respondent no.1/NTA is directed to constitute a standing Grievance Redressal Committee for the said purpose, if not already in place, where aggrieved candidates may approach for redressal of their grievances. The standing committee shall also be at liberty to devise a formula more suitable/appropriate for the examination in question.'

Around 4:30 am, a private bus ferrying Kanwariyas returning from their yatra to Baba Baidyanath temple rammed into a truck carrying gas cylinders near the Jamunia forest area under Mohanpur block in Jharkhand's Deoghar district. The driver, officials say, had dozed off at the wheel. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. The bus driver died on the spot. But the worst wasn't over. With no one at the wheel, the vehicle hurtled on for nearly 500 metres, ultimately smashing into a roadside heap of bricks near Jamunia Chowk. Six more people were killed on the spot, and many others suffered grievous injuries. Eyewitness accounts and police statements suggest that the death toll may still rise. 'Almost everyone in the bus was returning after worshipping… The driver had probably fallen asleep, that's when all this happened," said Ramanuj Yadav, a local resident who witnessed the wreckage and helped with rescue efforts. The bus, a 32-seater, was en route to Basukinath when the collision occurred. The truck it crashed into was transporting highly flammable gas cylinders, heightening the risk and panic at the scene. Fortunately, there was no fire. Inspector General of Dumka Zone Shailendra Kumar Sinha confirmed the details and said investigations are underway. Six Kanwariyas killed, 24 injured in bus-truck collision in Jharkhand
At least six Kanwariyas were killed and 24 others injured on Tuesday after a collision took place between a bus with passengers on board and a truck, loaded with cooking gas cylinders, in Jharkhand's Deoghar district, officials said. The accident occurred around 5.30 am near the Jamuniya forest under the Mohanpur Police Station limits when the bus collided with the commercial vehicle, they said. "Six devotees were killed and 24 others injured in the accident at Jamuniya Chowk in Deoghar. Eight of the 24 injured have been shifted to AIIMS, Deoghar, while the remaining are undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital," Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh Lakra said. Earlier, Inspector General (Dumka Zone) Shailendra Kumar Sinha told PTI that the accident occurred after the bus with Kanwariyas on board collided head-on with the truck transporting gas cylinders. Following the collision, the driver fell from the bus and the passenger vehicle, without anyone behind the steering wheel, continued moving for some time and stopped after hitting a stack of bricks, the IG said. The bus was severely damaged, he added. "Eighteen devotees have died in a bus-truck accident during the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Shravan in Deoghar in my Lok Sabha constituency. May Baba Baidyanath Ji give strength to their families to bear the loss," he posted on X. However, the police confirmed that only six people lost their lives, while the condition of two others is serious. Kanwariyas are devotees of Lord Shiva. At least 24 Kanwariyas were injured in the accident and taken to various hospitals and nearby primary health centres, including the Saraiyahat PHC in Dumka, another officer said. Casualties may increase as the condition of several injured is serious, he added. The district administration has been alerted after the accident, he said. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren condoled the death of the Kanwariyas and said a rescue operation was being conducted by the district administration there. "Very sad news has been received about the deaths of devotees travelling in a bus in an accident near Jamuniya chowk in Mohanpur block of Deoghar." "The district administration is providing medical assistance to the injured with relief and rescue operations. May Baba Baidyanath grant peace to the souls of the devotees who died in the accident and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this moment of grief," Soren posted on X. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar also expressed grief over the accident. "The news of the death of many devotees in the bus accident while Kanwariyas were going to Basukinath from Deoghar is extremely sad and painful. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray to Baba Bholenath for speedy recovery of the injured devotees," Gangwar posted on X. Deoghar Sub Divisional Officer Ravi Kumar said the Kanwariyas were on their way to the Basukinath temple. As per the Civil Surgeon, Deoghar, those who died included bus driver Subhash Turi, and others - Suman Kumari from Gaya, Piyush, Vaishali, Durgawati Devi and Janki Devi from Bettiah.
