Lopane stars for City as Sky Blues finals hopes dampen
Melbourne City have tightened their hold on a top-four A-League Men finish after a late Alessandro Lopane goal secured a 3-2 win over Sydney FC.
With the score level after a four-goal shootout in the first half, Lopane marked his return from injury with the 61st-minute matchwinner at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.
It was the midfielder's first appearance of the season after undergoing surgery for a patella injury in October.
A second-half challenge from the Sky Blues was expected after a season of late comeback wins, but a desperate City outfit held on.

City can finish the round as high as third on 37 points after extending their unbeaten streak to six matches against Sydney, five points adrift of league leaders Auckland FC.
Ufuk Talay's finals hopefuls, seventh in the league, have not defeated City since December 2022.
The Sky Blues are three points off sixth-placed Adelaide United, next round's opponents, with five games remaining of the home-and-away season.
A potentially serious injury to influential midfielder Leo Sena only adds to the host's woes.
Sena was stretchered off the field after his ankle was caught under him when he was tackled by City star Max Caputo in the seventh minute.
Sky Blues defender Joel King also appeared to pick up his own ankle complaint in the second half and was replaced by Zac De Jesus at 55 minutes.
It was teenage sensations Caputo and Medin Memeti calling the shots for the visitors in the first half.
Memeti opened the scoring in the fifth minute, before Caputo cancelled out Jordan Courtney-Perkins' 28th-minute goal to restore City's lead in the 35th minute.
Sydney defender Courtney-Perkins had controversially escaped giving away a penalty for fouling Memeti, having tugged his opponent's shirt in the 19th minute.
Courtney-Perkins then popped up again with a classy pass from the left wing to help Douglas Costa equalise in the 39th minute.

Fort Lauderdale United silences its doubters heading into inaugural USL final
Only 5%. That's how many fans believed Fort Lauderdale United FC had a shot at claiming the inaugural USL Super League championship, according to a leaguewide poll released on June 5. Two days later, that 5% looked like the smartest people in the room. With the semifinal tied deep into extra time, it was Fort Lauderdale's Kiara Locklear who delivered in the 119th minute. The Fort Lauderdale striker pounced on a loose ball that sailed past Carolina Ascent goalkeeper and into the back of the net — a stunner that knocked out the top-seeded favorites and booked the underdogs a golden ticket to Saturday's final. 'It's just fuel to the flame,' Locklear said at Thursday morning's news conference, reflecting on the team's mind-set going into the match. 'That 5% was just in our minds going into the semi final. I think even going into the final, there's still people that underestimate us, and we're just there to show up on Saturday and prove them wrong.' Now, the No. 4-seed Fort Lauderdale United FC will face a familiar foe: the Tampa Bay Sun FC. They have played four times this season — three of them ending in a draw. While the outside world may be surprised by the club with an overall record of 11-8-9, Fort Lauderdale head coach Tyrone Mears isn't. He knows the season has been far from perfect — 'a roller coaster,' as he puts it. Now, the team has to ride its momentum to the end. 'We have the quality, it's just been finding that consistency,' Mears said. 'I think they've really shown their character as the season's gone on — the willingness to fight and continue… I think what we showed towards the end of the season, we deserve to be in this final.' Their final test won't be easy. Tampa Bay comes into the championship with four USL All-League selections, including forwards Tash Flint and Cecilie Floe, midfielder Sydny Nasello and defender Vivianne Bessette. Fort Lauderdale has its own star power, too. Alongside striker Locklear, captain Addie McCain and forward Jasmine Hamid were named to the All-League roster, with McCain earning first-team honors. 'To be recognized by your peers, other coaches, it's huge. It means the world,' McCain said. 'But I think for me, like my goal is to win a championship for Fort Lauderdale… [my] eyes are on this weekend, and we want to bring a championship here. It's about what this team can do together one last time.' On Saturday, Fort Lauderdale will get one last shot to silence the doubters. And if the squad has shown anything this season, it's that they never stop fighting, especially when no one sees them coming.

De Bruyne's Italian job: Man City star signs for Napoli
Two-time Premier League player of the season Kevin De Bruyne has signed as a free agent with Serie A champions Napoli. "KING KEV IS HERE," Napoli declared in a series of posts on X on Thursday. The 33-year-old De Bruyne's contract at Manchester City has expired but Napoli did not announce the length of his new contract. KING KEV IS HERE 👑 💙 #ProudToBeNapoli | #ForzaNapoliSempre | #WelcomeKevin — Official SSC Napoli (@sscnapoli) June 12, 2025 Around 150 fans welcomed De Bruyne on his arrival at a clinic in Rome for his medical. They chanted his name before also singing about Napoli being champions after the player had gone into the facility. At the Italian giants, De Bruyne will reunite with Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku and follow in the footsteps of former Napoli great Dries Mertens, an ex-Belgium international. In Napoli's midfield, De Bruyne can team up with Serie A player of the year Scott McTominay, who made a highly successful move from City's neighbours and rivals, Manchester United. Known as one of soccer's most complete midfielders, De Bruyne was named the best player in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 and 2021-22 seasons and is generally considered one of the finest players of the EPL era. In 10 seasons at City, he helped City to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League trophy. The addition of De Bruyne may have been one of the reasons that convinced Napoli coach Antonio Conte to stay on for another season after he had considered rejoining Juventus.
