Fort Lauderdale United silences its doubters heading into inaugural USL final
That's how many fans believed Fort Lauderdale United FC had a shot at claiming the inaugural USL Super League championship, according to a leaguewide poll released on June 5.
Two days later, that 5% looked like the smartest people in the room.
With the semifinal tied deep into extra time, it was Fort Lauderdale's Kiara Locklear who delivered in the 119th minute. The Fort Lauderdale striker pounced on a loose ball that sailed past Carolina Ascent goalkeeper and into the back of the net — a stunner that knocked out the top-seeded favorites and booked the underdogs a golden ticket to Saturday's final.
'It's just fuel to the flame,' Locklear said at Thursday morning's news conference, reflecting on the team's mind-set going into the match. 'That 5% was just in our minds going into the semi final. I think even going into the final, there's still people that underestimate us, and we're just there to show up on Saturday and prove them wrong.'
Now, the No. 4-seed Fort Lauderdale United FC will face a familiar foe: the Tampa Bay Sun FC. They have played four times this season — three of them ending in a draw.
While the outside world may be surprised by the club with an overall record of 11-8-9, Fort Lauderdale head coach Tyrone Mears isn't. He knows the season has been far from perfect — 'a roller coaster,' as he puts it. Now, the team has to ride its momentum to the end.
'We have the quality, it's just been finding that consistency,' Mears said. 'I think they've really shown their character as the season's gone on — the willingness to fight and continue… I think what we showed towards the end of the season, we deserve to be in this final.'
Their final test won't be easy. Tampa Bay comes into the championship with four USL All-League selections, including forwards Tash Flint and Cecilie Floe, midfielder Sydny Nasello and defender Vivianne Bessette.
Fort Lauderdale has its own star power, too. Alongside striker Locklear, captain Addie McCain and forward Jasmine Hamid were named to the All-League roster, with McCain earning first-team honors.
'To be recognized by your peers, other coaches, it's huge. It means the world,' McCain said. 'But I think for me, like my goal is to win a championship for Fort Lauderdale… [my] eyes are on this weekend, and we want to bring a championship here. It's about what this team can do together one last time.'
On Saturday, Fort Lauderdale will get one last shot to silence the doubters. And if the squad has shown anything this season, it's that they never stop fighting, especially when no one sees them coming.

2025 Fantasy Football Mock Draft: Pick 4 Strategy
If you're reading this article, my home league 2025 fantasy football draft has already happened. As the proud owner of the 4th pick, I'll be walking you through how to crush your draft from this slot. Today we'll be doing a fantasy football mock draft, but I'll share those real money draft results shortly. I've done two other draft slots so far, so make sure to check those out below. For this exercise, we'll be jumping into an ESPN, 12-team, PPR mock draft before showing my team and explaining the strategy. 2025 Fantasy Football Draft Strategy: Pick 4 Similar to the third pick, you're going to want to prioritize a balanced draft. Since you'll have times where your picks are far apart, try to avoid going heavy at one position. Early in the draft, it's best to alternate between running back and wide receiver as best you can. When drafting from pick four, going for an elite quarterback or tight end isn't optimal. 2025 Fantasy Football Mock Draft Round One: CeeDee Lamb Round Two: Bucky Irving Round Three: Jaxon Smith-Njigba Round Four: Breece Hall Strategy For Rounds 1-4 Starting off your draft with one wide receiver and one running back is the best strategy from this slot. That's because you should be able to land Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Breece Hall from this slot every time. Since Hall and Smith-Njigba are great values at two different positions, you're now in a perfect spot going forward. With your most important positions already covered, you're not safe from any unnecessary reaches later in the draft. Round Five: Tetairoa McMillan Round Six: RJ Harvey Round Seven: Evan Engram Round Eight: Ricky Pearsall Strategy For Rounds 5-8 Somewhere in this range, you're going to want to grab a tight end. Drafting one too early isn't a great plan from this spot, but waiting isn't the best idea either. Targeting either T.J. Hockenson, Sam LaPorta, or Evan Engram is the best move you can make. Other than that, make sure you get at least one running back. I've found that targeting one in rounds six or seven is the sweet spot. Rounds five and eight are fine, but if you can avoid that, do so. Round Nine: Justin Fields Round 10: Josh Downs Round 11: Travis Etienne Jr Round 12: Brandon Aiyuk Strategy For Rounds 9-12 This range is where you draft your late-round quarterback. While Justin Fields, you can feel good about taking just one, but Anthony Richardson is a great 2nd option as well. That's up to how the draft board plays out later. In this range, you'll want to make sure you get one more running back. For these rounds, 10 and 11 are the sweet spot. Round 13: Kyle Williams Round 14: Jacory Croskey-Merritt Round 15: Brandon Aubrey Round 16: Arizona Cardinals D/ST Strategy For Rounds 13-16 Once you get your second running back for the bench, it's best player available from here. You should be familiar with Kyle Williams by now, but Jacory Croskey-Merritt is a great addition as well. Croskey-Merritt has crushed training camp and has a real shot to take over the RB1 job from Brian Robinson Jr. Yet, he's going so late in drafts that even I forgot about him for a few articles. The 4th spot is extremely strong this year for fantasy football drafts. Overall, this fantasy football mock draft went very well, and anyone who drafts a team similar to this should be excited about their upcoming season.

Chelsea 0 Crystal Palace 0: Pedro and Gittens make promising debuts
It felt like the first day of school after the summer holidays at the Bridge as Chelsea played out a goalless draw against Palace. There were a few new boys in the class, and one or two absentees, as the Club World Cup champions took on the FA Cup winners in the baking sunshine. Joao Pedro began up front (Liam Delap replaced him midway through the second half), while Jamie Gittens, signed from Borussia Dortmund as Jadon Sancho's replacement on the left wing, looked promising. With Levi Colwill likely to miss months of action after knee surgery, 6ft 3in teenager Josh Acheampong made a bright start deputising in central defence. The clean sheet will have boosted his confidence. But Chelsea really should have turned 70% possession into at least one goal, as chance after chance ended up in Row Z. Crystal Palace did manage to get the ball in the net, via an Eberechi Eze rocket of a free kick after 13 minutes. But the away fans' delirium was snuffed out by a VAR review. The Blues had only four weeks to recuperate after their summer adventure in the USA, winning the Club World Cup by defeating PSG and banking £85million in prize money along the way. So maybe it was too much to expect fireworks on the pitch in addition to the fireworks launched from the stadium roof before kick-off to mark their new title. "We created enough chances," said rueful manager Enzo Maresco, adding that he felt Chelsea deserved victory. Perplexingly for Chelsea fans, who overwhelmingly opt for Cole Palmer's name on the back of their replica shirts, he has switched from 20 to 10, taking over the in-limbo Mykhailo Mudryk's shirt number to mirror his idol Lionel Messi. New striker Joao Pedro has taken 20, which means the tills will be ringing in the club shop as weary parents are nagged for replacements to last season's versions at £100 a pop. Emerging into the Fulham Road after Sunday's 0-0 draw, both Palmer 10s and 20s were widely on show.

Transfer news live updates: Latest on Alexander Isak, Eberechi Eze, Carlos Baleba and more
The main summer transfer window into its final couple of weeks Not long after a bonus mini-window this year for the Club World Cup in June, the primary period for player trading opened for Premier League and EFL clubs on June 16. They will have until deadline day on September 1 to conclude any trading. And this year, the window shuts earlier than the previous 11pm deadline — at a universally agreed and very civilised time of 7pm. As long as deal sheets are submitted to the FA before that 7pm deadline, clubs and staff have a grace period of two hours to conclude paperwork on any late deals.
