Bueckers is triumphant in return to Connecticut, leading Wings past the Sun for 1st win of season
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Paige Bueckers had a triumphant return to Connecticut by scoring a career-best 21 points as Dallas won its first game of the season, beating the Sun 109-87 on Tuesday night.
Bueckers, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, shot 8 for 10 from the field and finished with seven assists and five rebounds.
Bueckers remained perfect at Mohegan Sun Arena, where the Sun play their home games. She went 15-0 at the building in college while playing for UConn, including winning four Big East championships with the Huskies. Many of her former teammates were in attendance Tuesday night.
She received a loud ovation from the sellout crowd when introduced before the game, and many fans were wearing her No. 5 jersey from UConn and Dallas.
Bueckers got Dallas (1-4) going early with seven points and four assists in the opening quarter as she was aggressively attacking for baskets or finding opening teammates.
Connecticut (0-5) led by one at the end of the first quarter, however, thanks to the play of Bria Hartley and Tina Charles. Dallas took over behind Bueckers in the second and led 56-42 at the half.
Arike Ogunbowale took over in the third quarter, scoring 15 points in the period after having only two in the first half. She helped the Wings build their lead to 88-74 heading into the final period.
Connecticut never threatened after that, and Bueckers left for good with just over four minutes left in the game.
Tina Charles led the Sun with 27 points and Marina Mabrey added 19.
The game also marked the return of former Sun players DiJonai Carrington and Ty Harris, who were traded to the Wings in the offseason. The two received a warm ovation from the crowd when they were introduced before the game and a welcome back video played on the scoreboard.
Carrington finished with 16 points and Harris was scoreless, but had three assists.

Chiefs Rashee Rice Slapped With New Lawsuit
Chiefs Rashee Rice Slapped With New Lawsuit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At OTAs this week, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked to evaluate wide receiver Rashee Rice. Said Mahomes, "He looks like Rashee ... explosive and fast." Advertisement He was talking about Rice on the football field. But the same can be said about him behind the wheel of a car on a freeway. While he continues to return from a torn LCL suffered in Week 4 last season, Rice has been slapped with another lawsuit stemming from his involvement in a multi-vehicle crash in Dallas in March 2024. Rice and Teddy Knox — teammates at SMU — already faced a lawsuit filed by two people who allege they suffered multiple injuries, including brain trauma and internal bleeding. The new lawsuit was filed in Dallas County this month by a woman who alleges that she and her son were heading home when their vehicle was hit in the high-speed crash. "Rice and Knox maneuvered to illegally pass traffic on the left side of the road in an emergency lane and hit a median," the lawsuit states. "The high speeds of their vehicles caused a rotation that demolished cars in their path and set off a high-speed chain reaction of other cars being struck and spun into each other. The resulting chain reaction of violent collisions impacted the vehicle in which the Plaintiff was traveling with her minor son." Advertisement The woman alleges in the lawsuit that people involved in the crash and other bystanders tried to speak to Rice and Knox after the crash, but they left the scene on foot. Says the filing, "Defendants leaving the scene of the collision was a conscious decision to ignore the welfare of those harmed by their grossly negligent conduct in favor of hiding their level of intoxication from activities earlier in the afternoon." The woman is claiming injuries, physical trauma and emotional/mental damage, and is seeking between $250,000 and $1 million. Rice was driving a Lamborghini leased through a Fort Worth-based company that day, and Knox was driving a Corvette leased in Rice's name, police said. They drove on U.S. 75 at speeds in excess of 110 mph when they lost control, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved a total of six vehicles, according to police. Advertisement Rice admitted to driving the Lamborghini and turned himself in to police two weeks later. He faces eight felony charges in connection with the crash – six counts of collision involving bodily injury, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and one count of aggravated assault. Knox faced the same charges and was suspended from the SMU football team following the crash. Dallas Cowboys Rookie Impressing Early during OTAs
Dallas Cowboys Rookie Impressing Early during OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys selected UCLA defensive tackle Jay Toia with pick No. 217 in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. ... and wouldn't it be nice is he could work out as well as the last Bruin to the 'Boys? Advertisement The last UCLA defensive tackle drafted by the Cowboys was Osa Odighizuwa and that has worked out beautifully. Toia is a former rugby player who doesn't shy away from physicality. The 6-2, 341-pound Inglewood native fills an immediate need for the Cowboys as a run-stopping defensive tackle. Maybe as a backup. Maybe as something more. On Thursday at voluntary OTAs, Toia received first-team reps with the team's starters. Healthy competition is vital to a team's success to make sure players are constantly pushing each other and looking to get better. ... and maybe that's all this is. Or maybe this signifies a major change - and an admission that Dallas' major roster flaw ... run-stopping ... merits real and new answers. Advertisement The Cowboys drafted defensive tackle Mazi Smith with their first-round pick back in 2022. The former Michigan star began to show signs of growth last season, but Dallas needs more. ... and inserting Toia in the mix will - if this works out - give the Cowboys an intriguing pair of 1-technique defensive tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, Toia had his best collegiate season in 2024—posting a 69 overall grade. The trust Toia has earned from the coaching staff early in their offseason program is a positive sign. If he continues to impress, that trust could lead to reps on the field during the regular season. A scouting view? Toia's ability to battle double-team blocks with a wide base will in theory help keep linebackers Kenneth Murray Jr., Jack Sanborn, and Marist Liufau free to play downhill and defend the run. Advertisement The development of Toia and his integration into defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' scheme will be an interesting storyline to follow throughout training camp as Toia could be an underrated contributor for the Cowboys defense. Kenneth Murray Jr. Promises One Key Improvement for the Dallas Cowboys Defense
Kenneth Murray Jr. Promises One Key Improvement for the Dallas Cowboys Defense originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys made several moves this offseason to improve their defense heading into the 2025 season. Dallas added value to the linebacker room by trading for former first-round pick Kenneth Murray Jr., and by signing linebacker Jack Sanborn. Advertisement Both are penciled in as starters. And … Murray is expected to contribute from Day 1 and there are rumors coming out of OTAs that he could wear the green dot to call plays this year. As someone who could immediately step in to relay the defensive play calls and quarterback the defense, Murray is vowing the unit will improve in a key area that's haunted them for years. Murray believes the Cowboys must stop the run if they truly want to be a great defense group. "The first thing you need to start by building a great defense is stopping the run,' Murray said, via DLLS. 'And so I think that was really the first thing that Ebeflus kind of talked about was stopping the run as a pillar of our defense. It's definitely an emphasis for us. Advertisement "Obviously, it's a new style coming in, and then, you know, got some new players. That's something that I'll take extremely personally. That that's mentality I'm gonna bring to it. It's personal, man. When they just running it down your throat, it's unacceptable." Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is known for an aggressive scheme and consistently getting stellar play out of his linebackers. Murray recorded 95 tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble across 14 games last season in Tennessee. But now? Murray has a chance to be a key contributor on a Cowboys defense that's looking to be an elite level unit.
