Morning Bid: Suits and smiles define new Ukraine talks

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Rocky Swift Volodymyr Zelenskiy dressed for success in his latest meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. Trump complimented Zelenskiy on his black suit in a briefing punctuated with smiles and laughter. It was a much different scene than their chilly meeting in February, when the Ukrainian president's military-style attire in the Oval Office drew ire. Zelenskiy declared it "the best of our meetings," and Trump said the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's hostility there. Whether it was the suit or just growing desperation to end a war that has cast a shadow over the region for more than three years, enthusiasm was contagious. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Trump's meeting with Zelenskiy and other European and NATO partners was very successful. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said his expectations for the gathering were "exceeded." Even Russia joined in, with special envoy for investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev calling Monday an "important day of diplomacy." On a largely directionless day in Asian markets, European equity futures traded higher. Pan-region Euro Stoxx 50 futures, German DAX futures, and FTSE contracts were all up about 0.2%. While traders keep one eye on geopolitical developments, the other will be focused on the Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium. Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework at the annual gathering. Money markets reflect an 83.6% chance of a quarter-point rate cut at the Fed's meeting on September 17, according to CME FedWatch. Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, one of two dissenting voices favouring a rate cut at last month's meeting, is due to speak today. Key developments that could influence markets on Tuesday: - Home Depot Q2 results - U.S. housing starts, building permits for July - Canada consumer price index for July - Debt sales: German 5-year notes, British 10-year gilts - Fed Vice Chair Michelle Bowman to speak at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium 2025 - 1810 GMT. - Riksbank monetary policy meeting Sign in to access your portfolio

Israel set to approve 'largest' gas supply deal in its history to Egypt

The Israeli government is set to finalise a major gas supply agreement with Egypt, involving the export of 22% of resources from Leviathan, Israel's largest gas field, and 13% of the country's total natural gas to Cairo over several years. The deal comes after two years of delays and is expected to be signed in the next two weeks. New Energy, a partner in the Leviathan field, described the agreement as the "largest" in the history of the Hebrew state, noting that it will triple Israeli exports by 2028. The company announced that Egypt will buy 130 billion cubic metres of Israeli gas until 2040, worth up to $35 billion (€30bn). The project is an amendment to the 2019 agreement signed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, which stipulated the export of only around 60 billion cubic metres by the early 2020s. The project allows Israel to increase natural gas production and export it to Asian and European markets, while at the same time guaranteeing Egypt a stable supply for its power plants and supporting the country's liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector. Stages of the deal and quantities of gas NewMed Energy (formerly known as Delek Drilling) confirmed that the deal will take place in phases, with Cairo first buying the gas through Egyptian importers Blue Ocean Energy, with 20 billion cubic metres starting in the first half of 2026, and an additional 110 billion cubic metres after the expansion of Leviathan's production is completed, according to the Hebrew newspaper Globes. The company described the deal as pivotal, as it will allow the field's production capacity to expand from 21 billion cubic metres to 23 billion cubic metres per year, strengthening Leviathan's position as one of the most important gas sources in the region. In 2024, the field produced about 11 billion cubic metres of gas, 50% of which was exported to Egypt, while the rest was distributed between Israel's domestic economy and Jordan. In terms of gas supply to the Israeli economy, NewMed Energy confirmed that the expansion will ensure that from the 2040s, Leviathan will be Israel's main source of gas, providing the bulk of the country's natural gas consumption until the end of the field's life. India and China agree to resume direct flights as Trump shakes up ties

NEW DELHI — India and China agreed on Tuesday to resume direct flights and step up trade and investment flows as the neighbors rebuild ties damaged by a 2020 border clash. The Asian giants are cautiously strengthening ties against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's unpredictable foreign policy, staging a series of high-level bilateral visits. The two countries will resume direct flights and increase trade and investment, including reopening border trade at three designated points, and facilitate in visas, the Indian foreign ministry said. Direct flights have been suspended since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. No date was given for their resumption. The latest statements came at the end of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's two-day visit to New Delhi for the 24th round of talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to resolve their decades-old border dispute. The border talks covered issues related to pulling back troops both countries have amassed on their Himalayan border, delimitation of borders and boundary affairs, the Indian ministry said. Both countries have agreed to set up a working group to consult and coordinate on border affairs to advance demarcation negotiations, a Chinese foreign ministry statement released on Wednesday showed. It said the mechanism will extend talks to cover the eastern and middle sections of the border. Meanwhile another round of talks on the western section will be held as soon as possible, the ministry said. Beijing also said both countries agreed to meet again in China in 2026. 'Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X after meeting Wang. Modi is scheduled to travel to China at the end of this month to take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization — his first visit to the country in more than seven years. A readout from the Chinese foreign ministry said Wang told Doval that 'the stable and healthy development of China-India relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries' people.' The two sides 'should enhance mutual trust through dialogues and expand cooperation,' Wang said, and should aim for consensus in areas such as border control and demarcation negotiations. India said Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar had underlined in his talks with Wang India's concerns with regard to the mega dam China is building on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet. Yarlung Zangbo becomes the Brahmaputra as it flows into India and Bangladesh, a lifeline for millions. The dam would have implications for lower riparian states and the need for 'utmost transparency' was strongly underlined, New Delhi said. To that, China agreed to share with India emergency hydrological information on relevant rivers on humanitarian principles, China's foreign ministry said. Both sides agreed to engage an expert-level mechanism on cross-border rivers, and maintain communication to renew flood reporting arrangements, the ministry said. Chinese officials had previously said hydropower projects in Tibet will not have a major impact on the environment or on downstream water supplies, but India and Bangladesh have nevertheless raised concerns.
