Joy and despair as 2027 Island Games sports unveiled
Judo's return to the Island Games has been heralded as "amazing news" for the sport in is one of seven sports to be added to the programme in the Faroe Islands in being added are basketball, shooting, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and beach volleyball after their omission in Orkney this golf, sailing, lawn bowls and squash have all been omitted from the judo it is the sport's first inclusion at an Island Games since Gibraltar in 2019, when Guernsey's five-strong side won a silver and two bronze medals. "It's amazing news for the sport and for judo on Guernsey in itself," Guernsey Judo Club's Eddie Mann said."We had a sort of an idea maybe six months ago that it was possibly going to be in there, so we have initial discussions about who potentially could go."He added to BBC Radio Guernsey: "It'll be a younger team that go across in 2027 compared to who went to Gibraltar."They'll be in their late teens a lot of them, early 20s, and they've got competitions ongoing throughout the year and going into the next couple of years." But while some sports are celebrating, other sports will have to find alternative competitions in 2027, among them sent three male players to the 2025 Island Games earlier this month - the fourth games in the last seven that the sport has been included. "It was great that we were in this year, " said Martin Watts, Guernsey's development officer for squash."It really creates a buzz around the sport. Obviously there's only a limited number of people that can actually go to the Island Games, however those players train, they train with other players and everybody's looking at their results."So without that sort of buzz and that event to look forward to in the next couple of years, it makes it slightly more difficult for the players to train and focus on something."He added: "We do have an alternative which is the European Team Championships."However that is just a team event, there's no individual bit, there's no doubles."So the Island Games being a mixed sport event adds something to it, it adds doubles as well, you have the team event, you have the individual event."So for the players that go and what it brings to our system, it really does raise the level and keep people's focus."

Organiser Martyn Maguire said it was important for the group to take official said: "We wanted to put in place all the correct governance for the association, so that's what we did."We had a battle strategy group running battle this year, but we really needed to take control of the actual association so that we could control the assets of the association, such as the battle shed and the office." Jersey's government has given nearly £160,000 in funding for the events, despite its overspend of about £150,000 last Maguire said the grant was "focused solely on the battle for this year".He said: "Now that we have control of the association, we're going to try and work closely with them to sort out some of the issues if we can, or at least help, but mainly at this moment in time, we're focused on battle, which is in two weeks' time."

Russell Wilson lifts the lid on his new life in NYC with wife Ciara after signing $10.5m Giants deal
Russell Wilson insists he and wife Ciara already feel well at home in New York City after his move to the Giants earlier this year. The 36-year-old quarterback is gearing up for his debut Giants season after penning a one-year, $10.5million contract with the team on the back of his Pittsburgh Steelers departure in March. Following a year in Pittsburgh together, as well as two in Denver and roughly six in Seattle, Wilson has packed up and moved cities once again with R&B singer Ciara - whom he married midway through his legendary Seahawks spell in 2016. He has three children with Ciara - daughters Sienna, eight, and Amora, one, and son Win, five - while also acting as a stepfather to her other son Future Jr, 11. And his wife's love for music means the switch to the Big Apple has suited them both perfectly. 'I've been in New York a bunch in the past, I have a lot of family that have been here and lived here and stuff like that, but we love it here. It's just a great city. New York is amazing, Jersey as well,' Wilson said after his first practice with the Giants on Wednesday. 'I think what I love is the fans, the sports culture. Obviously for Ciara, the music culture is great too, and I think that's great. But I think just for me, I've always been a fast-paced guy. 'I don't know if everybody knows me really well. I'm constantly just highly focused. I was always taking 18 credits in college, playing football, baseball. I just like being occupied.' He then continued: 'And at the same time, the number one part of it all is the game that I love. That's the best part about it. I get to do what I love to do and these guys love doing it together and we're spending a lot of time together. 'So, these moments, like this training camp, is the part where you love those bonding [moments] at the hotel, the bonding early in the mornings, the late at night, the extra film, that time that you spend together talking ball. I mean that's the part that you forever remember.' When asked if Ciara pushed him to head to NYC, Wilson admitted: 'No, she loves New York. I love New York too, but it was all about ball.' Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Wednesday that Wilson will be his starting quarterback heading into the 2025 campaign. New York also signed Jameis Winston in free agency and selected Jaxson Dart in the first round of this year's draft, while Tommy DeVito is still on the roster. But Daboll said about his quarterback plan: 'These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter.' Wilson, who won the Super Bowl with the Seahawks back in 2014, started 11 games last season for the Steelers; throwing 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 63.7 percent completion rate.
