This is when Eid Al Adha is predicted to start next month
Eid Al Adha is almost on the horizon and that means time with loved ones, celebratory meals and, for many of us in the UAE, a few days off.
While we're still waiting on official confirmation from the moon-sighting committee (as is tradition), astronomers have already given us a pretty good idea of when the festivities will begin.
According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board at the Emirates Astronomical Society, Dhu Al Hijjah – the 12th and final month in the Islamic lunar calendar – is likely to start on Wednesday, May 28.
That means Arafat Day would fall on Thursday June 5 and the start of Eid Al Adha is expected to fall on Friday June 6, 2025.
So yes, if the stars (and moon) align, we're looking at a lovely long weekend. But, as always, we'll need to wait for that official moon sighting to lock things in.
What is Eid Al Adha all about?
Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid Al Adha honours the Qur'anic story of Prophet Ibrahim.
The holiday coincides with the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and is observed through special prayers, family gatherings, charitable acts and the ritual sacrifice of livestock – typically sheep, goats, or cows – with the meat shared among family, friends and those in need.
What's Arafat Day?
Arafat Day is observed on the ninth day of Dhu Al Hijjah and marks the most important day of the Hajj pilgrimage. It's also a public holiday in the UAE and serves as a spiritual precursor to Eid Al Adha.
Quick recap:
Dhu Al Hijjah likely begins: Wednesday, May 28, 2025
Arafat Day likely falls on: Thursday, June 5, 2025
Eid Al Adha is expected on: Friday, June 6, 2025
Official dates: To be confirmed by the UAE moon-sighting committee
