World shares charge higher after US stocks rally to records on hopes for interest rate cuts - Markets & Companies

Shares charged higher Wednesday in Europe and Asia after US stocks hit new records when data showed inflation across the United States improved slightly last month. Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 added to its record set a day earlier. The future for the S&P 500 was up 0.2%, while that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed. A recent rally in share prices has been driven partly by relief over an extended truce in President Donald Trump's trade war with China, and partly by persisting hopes the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates. Those were reinforced by a moderation in the consumer price index in July. Germany's DAX rose 0.8% to 24,207.78 and the CAC 40 in Paris picked up 0.4% to 7,784.63. Britain's FTSE 100 edged 0.1% higher, to 9,157.26. 'Asia woke up in full risk-on mode, riding the coattails of a US session that looked like someone hit the 'infinite bid' button after CPI didn't blow the inflation doors off,' Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. China and the US agreed to extend by 90 days from Aug. 12 their pause in drastically higher tariff rates on each others' exports to allow more time for talks on a broad trade agreement. Although uncertainty over what the negotiations will yield remains, the truce has relieved pressure on companies and countries across Asia that rely heavily in supply chains routed through China. Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 2.6% to 25,613.67, while the Shanghai Composite index added 0.5% to 3,683.46. In Japan, relief over the Trump administration's confirmation that its exports will face a flat 15% US import duty has driven strong buying of computer chip-related companies and other exporters. The Nikkei 225 gained 1.3% to 43,274.67. Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi advanced 1.1% to 3,224.37. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.6% to 8,827.10. Taiwan's Taiex was up 0.9% and the Sensex in India gained 0.5%. In Bangkok, the SET climbed 1% after the Bank of Thailand cut its key interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to 1.5%. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 rose 1.1% to top its all-time high set two weeks ago. It closed at 6,445.76. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.1% to 44,458.61, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 1.4% to set its own record of 21,681.90. The better-than-expected report on inflation raised hopes the Federal Reserve will have the leeway to cut interest rates at its next meeting in September. Tuesday's report said US consumers paid prices for groceries, gasoline and other costs of living that were overall 2.7% higher in July than a year earlier. That's the same inflation rate as June's, and it was below the 2.8% that economists expected. Lower rates would give a boost to investment prices and to the economy by making it cheaper for US households and businesses to borrow to buy houses, cars or equipment. President Donald Trump has angrily been calling for cuts to help the economy, often insulting the Fed's chair personally while doing so. The Fed has hesitated, worried that Trump's tariffs could make inflation much worse. The Fed will get one more report on inflation and another on the US job market, before its next meeting, which ends Sept. 17. The most recent jobs report was a stunner, coming in much weaker than economists expected. Critics say the broad US stock market is looking expensive after its surge from a bottom in April. That's putting pressure on companies to deliver continued growth in profit. In other dealings early Wednesday, US benchmark crude oil dropped 26 cents to $62.91 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, declined 20 cents to $65.92 per barrel. The US dollar fell to 147.24 Japanese yen from 147.84 yen. The euro climbed to $1.1727 from $1.1677. The Breakthroughs Powering Samsung's Thinnest, Most Refined Foldables

Since unveiling the world's first foldable smartphone in 2019, Samsung has pursued one goal: to give users big-screen power in a pocket-friendly device. Years and thousands of design and engineering advancements later, that promise comes to life. The Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are Samsung's thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldables to date. Pocket-friendly Proportions Galaxy Z Flip7 slides into any pocket at just 6.5 mm thin when open and 13.7 mm when closed. An ultra-high-density circuit board makes sure there is no wasted space internally and Samsung enhanced the battery's energy density, boosting its capacity by 300 mAh while reducing its thickness. Meanwhile, Galaxy Z Fold7 is nearly half the thickness of the original Fold, measuring just 8.9 mm folded and 4.2 mm unfolded. This 48% reduction combined with a wider, brighter screen and a new 21:9 bar-phone aspect ratio, delivers a foldable device that is both portable and intuitive to use . Stronger, Slimmer Hinges Galaxy Z Fold7 introduces a third-generation Armor FlexHinge that is 27% thinner and 43% lighter than its predecessor. Key upgrades include: • Thinner critical rotating and supporting elements, resulting in a hinge that is smaller in size while maintaining strength. • New alloy components that increase yield strength by over 14% allow the hinge to better withstand repeated folding. • Separate supporting and rotating functions add structural stability and greater design flexibility. • A wingplate that opens wider delivers a flatter and cleaner screen for a more premium viewing experience. Galaxy Z Flip7 features Samsung's thinnest FlexHinge yet. It's 29% slimmer than the hinge on Galaxy Z Flip6 yet still supports full FlexMode and day-to-day toughness. Thinner, Stronger Displays The display is a cornerstone of Galaxy Z Fold7's hardware innovations, with a focus on greater durability while ensuring the device is lighter and thinner: • Reduced display thickness by more than 39% by completely reoptimizing the panel structure and introducing advanced materials . • Titanium-based lattice replaces carbon fiber for 64% improved durability and better resistance. • Achieved a slimmer profile by redesigning the panel layer to better absorb external stress and ensure consistent rigidity. • Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) is 50% thicker than the UTG on Galaxy Z Fold6 for a smoother, less-visible crease and improved performance . With Galaxy Z Flip7, Samsung maintains the Z Flip series' iconic design but packs more power in a smaller package: • A new edge-to-edge Infinity Cover Display removes the black notch to provide more content and cleaner visuals. • The HID camera is precisely corner-mounted, keeping visuals clean and symmetrical. • The display bezel shrinks from 3.94 mm to 1.25 mm, a 68% reduction that makes Galaxy Z Flip7 the world's thinnest display bezel on a foldable. Pro Cameras, Optimized for Potability Galaxy Z Fold7 delivers an ultra-level camera experience, providing flagship technology in a sleek and light design. • First 200 MP wide-angle camera in a foldable that's made possible by a new thin Actuator and a complete structural redesign. • The camera module shrunk by 18% and ran nearly 30,000 simulations, culminating in the thinnest 200 MP camera on a foldable device that doesn't sacrifice image quality. On Galaxy Z Flip7, the camera module has been reengineered from the ground up, delivering flagship image quality in a slimmer housing. To achieve a thinner design while maintaining high performance, Samsung streamlined the internal structure of the entire module, incorporating a smaller actuator to ensure high-performance autofocus with less bulk. Tougher Materials, Lighter Feel Samsung reinforced Galaxy Z Fold7's thin profile with stronger, more advanced materials. The cover screen now features Corning® Gorilla® Glass Ceramic 2 , making it 30% stronger in material strength than the previous generation. Additionally, the frame and hinge cover have been upgraded to Advanced Armor Aluminum , a material that is 10% tougher than the Armor Aluminum previous used in Galaxy Z Fold6. The Bottom Line Every hinge, display layer and camera component inside Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 was redesigned for one purpose: give consumers a refined foldable that feels as effortless as any premium smartphone. Welcome to the new era of pocket-ready power.

Microsoft has become the next $4 trillion company

Microsoft became the second company to reach a $4 trillion market valuation on Thursday, after its blockbuster earnings report on Wednesday night boosted the tech giant's shares. Microsoft's shares (MSFT) jumped nearly 4.5 percent after the market opened on Thursday, pushing its intraday valuation to $4.01 trillion. The company's shares have risen roughly 28 percent since the start of this year. The milestone comes just a year and a half after Microsoft reached a $3 trillion valuation. The company first cracked the $1 trillion mark in April 2019. It follows Nvidia into the $4 trillion valuation club, which hit the mark earlier this month. Microsoft forecast a record $30 billion in capital spending for the current fiscal first quarter to fuel its AI ambitions, and reported booming sales in its Azure cloud computing business on Wednesday. Wall Street analysts also noted that Microsoft's Copilot AI chatbot appears to have driven meaningful growth in its Microsoft 365 enterprise software business. Microsoft's move to $3 trillion was more measured than other tech giants, Nvidia (NVDA) and Apple (AAPL), with AI bellwether Nvidia tripling its value in just about a year and clinching the $4 trillion milestone before any other company on July 9. Apple was last valued at $3.12 trillion. Lately, breakthroughs in trade talks between the US and its trading partners ahead of President Donald Trump's August 1 tariff deadline have buoyed stocks, propelling the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq to record highs. Microsoft, the second largest US company, has rebounded nearly 50 percent from its April 2025 lows, when global markets were rattled by Trump's tariff offensive. Microsoft's multibillion-dollar bet on OpenAI is proving to be a game-changer, powering its Office Suite and Azure offerings with cutting-edge AI and fueling the stock to more than double its value since ChatGPT's late-2022 debut. Armed with exclusive access to OpenAI's models, Microsoft has raced to the front of the generative AI pack — supercharging its Azure cloud business, now the company's top revenue driver, and solidifying its dominance in the tech landscape, compared to Google's cloud and Amazon's web services. Wall Street's surging confidence in the company comes on the heels of back-to-back record revenues for the tech giant since September 2022. The stock's rally had also received an extra boost as the tech giant trimmed its workforce and doubled down on AI investments — determined to cement its lead as businesses everywhere race to harness the technology. While sweeping US tariffs had investors bracing for tighter business spending, Microsoft's strong earnings have shown that the company's books are yet to take a hit from the levies. But despite its meteoric rise, Microsoft has been streamlining its workforce in recent months. The company said earlier this month that it would cut around 9,000 employees, approximately 4 percent of its staff, its largest reduction since 2023. Those layoffs came after the company cut 6,000 workers in May. A company spokesperson said the July cuts were, in part, a reflection of new technologies that have made employees more productive. While AI wasn't mentioned specifically, the cuts came as Silicon Valley giants deploy the technology they're building to make their workers more efficient. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said earlier this year that 20 percent to 30 percent of the company's code was being generated by AI, and it's is pouring billions into AI infrastructure investments.
