In Dewan Rakyat today: Middle East geopolitics, maritime disputes and subsidy cuts
According to the Order Paper available on the Parliament's official website, Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) will bring the matter up to the Prime Minister during the Minister's Question Time.
Also, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) will ask the Prime Minister about how the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2002 regarding the sovereignty of Ligitan and Sipadan Islands may influence the determination of maritime boundaries between Malaysia and Indonesia in the Sulawesi Sea, including the sovereignty over blocks ND6 (Block Y) and ND7 (Block Z).
During the Question for Oral Answers session, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) will seek an explanation from Investment, Trade and Industry Minister regarding government measures in addressing the United States tariff issue with the involvement of state governments, while Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) will ask the Agriculture and Food Security Minister about the savings through the reduction in subsidy expenditure and the impact on the egg market.
Following the question answer session, the sitting will continue with the first reading of the Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2025, the second reading of the Street, Drainage and Building (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Whistleblower Protection (Amendment) 2025.
The Second Meeting Of The Fourth Session Of 15th Parliament is scheduled for 24 days with the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan on July 31. — Bernama

Subscribe to our FREE East Malaysian newspaper Sarawak Tribune recently published an article with the headline 'Militant Using Press Cover Eliminated' without realising that the 'militant' was actually Al-Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif. The paper has since issued an apology over the mistake. 'We sincerely apologise to the family, colleagues, and friends of Anas Al-Sharif, as well as our readers and the media community over any difficulties caused. 'We also would like to emphasise that we strongly stand against the killing of journalists and suppresion of media at any place in the world,' it said. Anas, who is a well-known reporter providing news coverage in war-torn Gaza, was killed in action along with several other members of the media in a targeted attack by Israel forces on a camp that housed journalists in Gaza last Sunday (10 August). The late Anas left behind his wife and two children. 'This attack comes amid the devastating humanitarian impact of the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, including the massacre of civilians, forced starvation, and the destruction of entire communities,' the network said. 'The order to kill Anas Al-Sharif, one of the bravest journalists in Gaza, along with his colleagues, is a desperate attempt to silence the voices that are exposing the plans for the imminent seizure and occupation of Gaza,' it added. Allegations of Zionism Admitting to the article of Anas' death not meeting high standards of accuracy, the Sarawak Tribune has denied allegations of promoting Zionist narratives. 'We strongly deny these allegations. Sarawak Tribune has never and will never once support or promote any agenda that affects the rights, dignity, and safety of journalists or the innocent public, no matter their nationality, ethnicity, or religion,' it said. The newspaper also informed that it will take steps in preventing any repeats of the mistake, with the steps being: To verify multiple sources for news related to conflict; implement additional fact-checking measures before publication and provide further training to editorial teams on reporting in high-risk and sensitive contexts. Meanwhile, local non-government organisation (NGO) Penang4Palestine expressed their anger towards the Sarawak Tribune and said the report has tainted the reputation of local media, urging them to make another public apology. The 'History will judge how journalists and media organisations choose to report — or distort — the truth when faced with humanitarian crises. 'P4P stands firmly with all journalists who risk their lives to report the truth, and insists that journalists are not targets of war — they are protectors of facts and the voice of the people,' he said. Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire: Malaysia-led observers on ground from tomorrow
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysia-led Interim Observer Team (IOT) will be deployed starting tomorrow to monitor the ceasefire arrangement in conflict zones along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the team is made up of defence attachés from Bangkok and Phnom Penh. "During the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, both sides agreed to form this Interim Observer Team (IOT). "The Bangkok team yesterday briefed 75 senior Thai officers on the necessary measures. "In Phnom Penh, tomorrow and the day after, there will be site visits to the designated conflict zones. "The IOT's main mandate is to ensure the ceasefire system is upheld and to compile reports from both sides on any violations. "This is their duty to investigate," he told a press conference today. Nizam said he had also asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to send letters to the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia for the next stage, which would allow the Asean Observer Team (AOT) to enter conflict areas in both countries. "The AOT, made up of Asean members, will be on the ground to ensure and monitor that there are no violations of the ceasefire arrangement. "This task is challenging because the conflict areas stretch about 840km along the border, and for this task, logistical support will be provided by the United States," he said. According to the Agreed Minutes of the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting issued after the Extraordinary GBC Meeting on Aug 7, both sides must avoid unprovoked firing towards the other's positions or troops, which may escalate tensions.

Anwar: Cabinet to discuss separating attorney general, public prosecutor roles this month
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a proposal to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor will be tabled to the Cabinet at the end of this month. He said the move is part of the ongoing legal reform agenda under the MADANI Government, implemented within just two and a half years in office. 'This separation (of the roles) has long been demanded, and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) will table it to the Cabinet at the end of this month. So, we are seeing encouraging progress,' Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. He said this in reply to Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who had asked which outdated laws were being reviewed or abolished in line with the government's reform agenda, and the timeline for their implementation. Anwar also highlighted that the MADANI Government has so far introduced 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments — one involving citizenship, and the newly passed Parliament Services Act 2025. Among key reforms cited were amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act, the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, the Ombudsman Bill 2025, and the Cyber Crime Bill 2025. 'I must emphasise that this record over two and a half years has yet to be matched by any previous administration, including that of the Honourable Member (Rosol),' Anwar said pointedly. The Prime Minister said that five new acts were introduced and 34 acts amended in 2023; another five new acts were enacted and 57 acts amended in 2024; and four new acts have been passed, with six acts amended, along with two new bills and 11 other bills amended so far this year. On the subject of anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar said he had no objection to enhancing or updating the current legislation. He noted that he had previously proposed stronger anti-defection laws during his time as Opposition Leader, but those proposals were not incorporated into the Federal Constitution (Amendment) (No. 3) Act 2022, which currently bars MPs from switching parties. 'So while new proposals are welcome, let's not forget who previously blocked such efforts. It was those on that (formerly government) bloc,' Anwar said. — Bernama
