Tunisia: President Kais Saied holds meeting on water and agricultural issues
According to a video of the meeting released by the Presidency on Wednesday, the Head of State addressed the state of water networks and some dams that have become "neglected due to insufficient maintenance."
He emphasised Tunisia's need for "new water legislation that meets the demands of the people," noting that current water laws have not been "implemented as required."
Additionally, the President of the Republic called on the Ministry of Agriculture to intervene in the management of mountain lakes and urged it to "prepare now for the upcoming harvest season and ensure proper grain storage."
During the meeting, President Kais Saied stressed that "the agricultural sector is the future," adding that "Tunisia cannot achieve full sovereignty while its citizens depend on food imports."
He recalled that Tunisia was a grain exporter until the 1960s.

Tunis - A Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri, was held Tuesday, at the Government Palace in Kasbah, to review the financial balances of the draft Finance Law for 2026. According to a press release, the Prime Minister affirmed that the draft Finance Law for 2026 is 'a sovereign instrument that embodies the popular will and represents the financial translation of the State's social and economic priorities and the objectives of the Development Plan for the period 2026–2030.' That plan is based on a bottom-up approach starting from the local level, then the regional level, then the district level, and finally reaching the national level, in line with the vision of President Kais Saied. Zenzri stressed that this draft law constitutes the embodiment of the State's policy and its major choices, which revolve mainly around reconciling social justice with economic growth. The Cabinet reviewed the main axes included in the financial balances of the 2026 draft Finance Law, foremost among them strengthening the pillars of the social state, particularly employment and reducing unemployment, through the implementation of a new recruitment programme in the civil service in 2026, continuing the programme to regularize temporary public workers (site workers), combating precarious employment, and prohibiting outsourcing. Other key points include undertaking legislative reforms to support decent work and guarantee social protection, supporting vulnerable groups and low-income families, working on their economic integration and improving their living conditions, as well as improving the quality of public services and bringing them closer to citizens, especially in health, education, and transportation. Among the other components of these balances are boosting public investment with fair development in line with the 2026–2030 Development Plan, diversifying sources of investment financing, promoting investment in renewable energy, integrating the informal economy, and investing in equitable development based on the outcomes of the work of local, regional, and district councils in preparing the 2026–2030 Development Plan. Transport strike in Tunisia adds to pressure on president
TUNIS: A strike halted transport services across Tunisia on Wednesday, as workers demanded higher wages, improved working conditions and urgent reforms, adding to pressure on President Kais Saied to deal with a deepening economic crisis. Tunisians have for years endured poor public services, especially in the health, transportation, and education sectors, due to weak funding and public investment, along with frequent interruptions in drinking water and electricity supply. Saied, who has tightened his grip on power since 2021, blames what he calls conspirators seeking to undermine the state and fuel social tensions. The UGTT union's three-day strike disrupted daily life in both major cities and rural areas. Metro stations in Tunis were deserted and buses at a standstill forcing commuters to use private cars, taxis and unlicensed motorcycle taxis. 'We are suffering. There is no transportation, no jobs for us, and everything is getting more expensive and worse,' said a young man named Ayman Amiri, in the capital, as he waited in vain at a bus stop. The transport union, which said the strike was 100% successful on its first day, said the transport sector was collapsing. The Ministry of Transport said the union's financial demands were unfair and could not be met until the revenues of public transport companies improved. Eritrea: President Isaias Afwerki Meets with High-Level Italian Delegation
President Isaias Afwerki met, at Denden Guest House in mid-afternoon hours today, the Italian delegation led Mr. Francesco Lollobrigida, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests; and Mr. Edmondo Cirielli, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The extensive discussions centered on enhancement of bilateral ties and partnership as part and parcel and continuation of the concrete areas of cooperation on various sectors that had been reached between President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Italy in February 2024 last year. The broad areas of cooperation include the sectors of energy, mining; physical infrastructure; manufacturing; Agriculture, Marine Resources, Tourism, Culture and Sports, Human capital development, economic cooperation and finance. The two sides also discussed regional peace, security and stability. A Comprehensive Plan of Action on Bilateral Cooperation Between the State of Eritrea and the Italian Republic (as specified above) was signed after the meeting by Mr. Nesredin Mohamed, Eritrea's Minister of Trade and Industry; and Mr. Edmondo Cirielli, Italy's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The two sides further agreed to hold continuous meetings in Eritrea and Italy in the period ahead to monitor and expedite the implementation of the Cooperation Agreement. In a brief statement to the Eritrean News Agency, Minister Francesco Lollobrigida underlined that the progress achieved today reflects the initial tangible step in the efforts that have been exerted in Asmara and Rome to enhance bilateral cooperation. The meeting was attended by Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of Economic Affairs of the PFDJ, and Mr. Alfonso Di Riso, Ambassador of Italy to Eritrea.
