Nine dead, 33 injured as mini bus overturns in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district
A car was also involved in the accident, they said.
Mukerian Deputy Superintendent of Police Kulwinder Singh Virk said the bus, with about 40 passengers, was on its way to Dasuya from Hajipur town when the accident occurred.
Police stated the driver is said to have lost control over the vehicle, though exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
The injured passengers were admitted to Dasuya Civil Hospital for treatment.
On receiving information, Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik reached Dasuya to oversee the rescue and relief operations.
DC Jain said the government would provide an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured. The government will also bear the complete medical expenses of the injured, she added.
"At the accident site, an Alto car and the mini bus were found damaged. An investigation is underway to ascertain whether the accident occurred due to overspeeding, overloading or a technical fault. Further action will be taken based on the probe findings," SSP Malik said.
The deceased have been identified as Raju Bala (5) and Meena (30), both of Budhabaar village; Love Kumar (50) of Kangra district (Himachal Pradesh); Gurmit Ram (65) of Haler village; Satwinder Kaur (55) of Jalal Chak village; Balbir Kaur (60) of Dasuya; Sanjeev Kumar (30) of Gurdaspur district; and Subag Rani (55) of Sahora village, said Dr Manmohan Singh, civil hospital's senior medical officer.
One person's identity, a man aged about 50, is yet to be established, he said.
Of the 33 people admitted to the hospital, three critically injured Raj Rani (55) of Sahora, Sanjeev Singh (45) of Chakraal and Khushi Mehta (22) were referred to higher medical centres, Dr Singh said.
Six people were discharged after being administered first aid, while the condition of the remaining 24 injured was stable, he added.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed grief over the incident.

Lawyer's kidnapping and murder case cracked; 8 held
Belagavi: Raibag police cracked the kidnapping and murder of lawyer Santosh Patil from Raibag by arresting eight accused and launching a search for two others who are absconding. SP Dr Bhimashankar Guled on Monday described the case as one of the most challenging investigations undertaken by police. "Both the victim and the main accused in the case are lawyers, which made the probe even more complex," he said. The report confirmed the remains were of Santosh. Land dispute behind murder The motive behind the murder stemmed from a disputed property deal. According to SP Guled, the victim Santosh's late brother Laxman Patil worked as an assistant to Shivagouda, and together they purchased six sites in Indi town (Vijayapura district) and 1 acre-4 gunta of prime land in Raibag. All properties were registered in Laxman's name. Following Laxman's death during the Covid-19 pandemic, Santosh transferred the six sites to Laxman's wife and was in the process of transferring the Raibag land as well. This allegedly angered Shivagouda, who objected to the transfer. In retaliation, Shivagouda gave a contract for Rs 14 lakh to Halabannavar of Bailhongal for killing Santosh through his assistant lawyer Kiran Kempawade. Two accused — Mahaveer Hanji and Nagaraj Naik — are still absconding. Police have seized cash, the vehicle used for the crime, and the weapons involved.

Two arrested for posing as women and cheating man of Rs 4.5 lakh with marriage promise
Noida: Two men from Delhi were arrested for allegedly posing as young, unmarried women on social media to cheat people by soliciting friendships and then taking money from them on various pretexts. The accused, Amit alias Aarav (23) and Mohd Rizwan (24), created fake profiles on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to befriend and deceive men with promises of romance and marriage, police said. They were held on Sunday. According to police, the duo would adopt names, such as "Mansi", "Sanju", and "Nandani", and use stolen photos of women to create convincing online identities. They would initiate conversations, express interest in marriage, and slowly gain the trust of their targets. Illegal sand mining in Bokaro continues despite NGT ban
Bokaro: Though the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a complete ban on sand mining during the monsoon (June 10 to Oct 15), illegal sand extraction continues unabated in Bokaro district, especially at Bhathua Ghat of the Damodar river under Harla police station. While the mining department appears proactive on paper, its field presence is virtually invisible where violations are rampant. Hundreds of tractors operate daily at Bhathua and Pindrajoda Ijri river ghats, extracting and transporting sand in broad daylight and even late at night. However, the mining department's focus appears limited to token action at other sites like Balidih, Sector 12, and Pindrajora, where one or two vehicles are seized weekly. In the past 27 days (June 10 to July 7), nine tractors were seized, and an FIR was filed against "unknown" individuals. Locals allege that while deputy commissioner of Bokaro, Ajay Nath Jha, continues to issue instructions and warnings, the mining department merely took harsh steps to curb the unlawful business of sands.
