School Holidays: Telangana, AP Schools To Remain Closed For 5 Days, Check Details
August marks the beginning of the festive season in India, offering students short breaks. Schools in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will remain close for a total of five days this month. Since Rakhi Purnima falls on August 9, which is a Saturday, schools will have a holiday. August 10 is a Sunday, resulting in two consecutive holidays. After attending school for four more days, there is another holiday on August 15 for Independence Day. Subsequently, Krishnashtami falls on August 16, which is a Saturday, and August 17 is a Sunday, providing a total of five holidays.
Sri Krishna Janmashtami or Krishna Ashtami, is a major festival in India for Hindu devotees, celebrated in Shravan (August) to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This occasion brings families and communities together through spiritual and cultural activities. In North India, devotees often fast rigorously, abstaining from food and water, and break the fast at midnight, believed to be Krishna's birth time, while chanting Krishna's name continuously. In South India, devotees start the day before sunrise, bathe, and wear yellow or saffron clothes. Homes are cleaned and decorated with flower arches, torans, and rangolis, and the puja room is adorned with Krishna idols or pictures, turmeric, vermillion, and basil garlands.
Meanwhile, Independence Day in India is observed annually on August 15. This day marks the historic event in 1947 when India gained freedom from British colonial rule after nearly two centuries of subjugation. The struggle for independence was characterised by a long and arduous campaign involving numerous freedom fighters and leaders who employed a variety of methods, from non-violent protests and civil disobedience, led by figures like Mahatma Gandhi, to revolutionary activities orchestrated by groups like the Indian National Army.
On the other hand, schools in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand are closed today, August 8 due to heavy rains and possible floods in many districts. The Indian Meteorological Department had issued red and orange alerts for many areas, warning of conditions like heavy rain, lightning and waterlogging. Due to this decision, lakhs of students from primary to intermediate were instructed to stay at home.

Animal Birth Control centres: ‘No space for so many strays, will affect sterilisation drive'
As one enters Sneh Animal Welfare Society in Shahdara's Usmanpur, what catches the eye is a row of kennels running parallel to a narrow open drain, carrying leftover food and dog waste. These kennels are home to 104 stray dogs, picked up from across the Capital. Some need a good cleaning with dogs lying on the floor covered with urine and stool. The Tuesday morning rain has only worsened the situation with dogs bringing in more mud and muck from their walks outside. With the Supreme Court directing that stray dogs from Delhi-NCR should be removed to shelter homes within eight weeks, officials running the Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre in collaboration with Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are concerned that their sterilisation programme will now take a backseat. Many of the dogs at the shelter – which can accommodate up to 280 strays – belong to the Red Fort area, says Dr Rajat, the vet at the centre run by an NGO. For him, the SC order is a step towards 'mass culling'. He adds that sterilisation surgeries cannot take place if dogs are needed to be caged forever. 'We have little space and post-operative care requires space… There are chances of the dog, which has undergone sterilisation, getting infected.' The Neighbourhood Woof, an ABC centre in Timarpur, meanwhile, has received orders from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday not to release dogs recently captured from the Red Fort area even after Independence Day celebrations are over. As Scooter, Phoenix, Simba, Jackie, Bharati, Komal, and Christina roam around the centre, with some other dogs either sleeping or playing, those running the facility are worried about their sterilisation programme. Partially under construction with more kennels being added, the centre can as of now accommodate 100-120 dogs. Officials say the centre also sterilises 300 dogs in a month. 'We have received a call from MCD saying that we should not release these dogs back on the streets after August 15. How can we keep them here? This will stop our sterilisation programme since dogs require 4-5 days of post-operative care and we don't have space to accommodate so many,' says Ayesha Christina Benn, Managing Trustee and CEO of Neighbourhood Woof. Some of the kennels at the centre are marked 'Red Fort' along with dates, indicating these dogs were picked up from the Red Fort area last week. A few kilometers away in Bela Road, Yash Domestic ABC centre is located beside an MCD cremation ground. It is one of the ABC centres that has an operation theatre of its own. Dr Sanjeev Kumar, the vet, says he has been receiving multiple calls since Monday from local residents. 'Some say 'please take away the dogs from our locality' while some plead that they be intimated before the rescue team reaches their locality, so that they can hide the dogs at their homes.' He adds that in case all strays are shifted to shelters, the sterilisation drive will suffer. 'When a dog comes for sterilisation, it is kept under observation for 24 hours. After operation, it is again kept under observation for 4-5 days. This will not be possible if kennels are overflowing.' 'The SC must be aware that centres can't accommodate dogs beyond a certain number. If the MCD asks us to not release dogs to the streets, we will have to stop sterilising dogs.' At Jal Vihar Colony in Lajpat Nagar, Animal India Trust ABC facility has been shut for two weeks after its roof collapsed. 'No dog was hurt… We are rebuilding the damaged portion,' says an official. The facility now lies abandoned with empty and cramped kennels covered by plastic sheets. Speaking to The Indian Express, an official from MCD said the first step to be taken now is to capture and shelter aggressive dogs. 'We are looking at complaints received from RWAs and rounding up dogs. Sterilisation is not the main focus now… Our main objective is to give people relief from stray dogs.'

MCC moves for flex-free city, seeks cooperation of organisers
Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) decided to curb flex usage during the festival period, aiming to make the city 'flex-free' and thereby prevent pollution. The MCC sought support from political, religious, and social bodies to keep the city free from flex hoardings. The MCC also issued a warning that violators will face action under the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act. In a public notice issued on Aug 5, the MCC sought the cooperation of individuals and organisations in this direction. The MCC's public notice ahead of Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and other festivals will mandate all organisers in the city limits to stick to the rules by avoiding unauthorised flex and other public materials in public places. Meanwhile, MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik stated that the drives to remove unauthorised hoardings, cutouts, flex banners, posters, and buntings in the city corporation limits are being conducted continuously. He also sought cooperation from the public to keep the city clean with the motto: 'flex-free festival - clean environment for our safety'. The commissioner stated that some of the organisers, cinema advertisers, and social, religious, and political organisers have been erecting cutouts and other materials in the city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo Such unauthorised flex banners and other materials are disfiguring the beauty of the city. "The MCC has the authority to impose penalties and file criminal cases against those who put up illegal hoardings and flex under the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act and govt order dated March 11, 2016. Hence, flex or banners should not be put up for any upcoming religious and other festivals," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
