HSS Engineers' chairman steps down

KUALA LUMPUR: HSS Engineers Bhd says Datuk Mohd Zakhir Siddiqy Sidek has stepped down as its chairman effective July 31.
He wants to pursue other commitments and responsibilities outside the company and focus on other ongoing professional priorities, HSS Engineers said in a statement.
Mohd Zakhir, 58, served on HSS Engineers' board from April 17, 2015 and was also a member of the audit and risk management committee.
Datuk Seri Ismail Md Salleh, a senior independent non-executive director, will assume the role of acting chairman on Friday.
HSS Engineers said over the past decade as chairman, Mohd Zakhir played a pivotal role in guiding the company through several significant milestones.
He oversaw the company's initial public offering and listing on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia in 2016, followed by its successful transfer to the Main Market in 2017.
He provided strategic oversight during the acquisition of SMHB Engineering Sdn Bhd, which strengthened the company's engineering consultancy capabilities and leadership in infrastructure and water-related projects.
HSS Engineers executive vice chairman Tan Sri Ir Kuna Sittampalam said Mohd Zakhir's strategic vision was instrumental in taking it public and advancing key corporate initiatives, including the acquisition of SMHB.
"We are immensely appreciative of his invaluable contributions and unwavering support, which have laid a solid foundation for the company's continued growth," he added.

Sentral REIT to dispose of Wisma Sentral Inai to Turiya for RM135mil

KUALA LUMPUR: The manager of Sentral Real Estate Investment Trust (Sentral REIT) has inked a conditional sale and purchase agreement to dispose of Wisma Sentral Inai in Kuala Lumpur to Turiya Properties Sdn Bhd, a unit of Turiya Bhd , for RM135mil cash. In a bourse filing, Sentral REIT Management Sdn Bhd said its investment cost in the 12-storey commercial building on Jalan Tun Razak came to RM136.04mil. Based on a carrying value of RM150mil as at Dec 31, 2024, the group expects a net loss of RM4mil following the proposed disposal. The property, which is currently vacant, was completed in 1994. It has a land area of 39,439 sq ft, a net lettable area of 233,021 sq ft and features 310 parking lots. The agreement is conditional subject to the Main Market-listed Turiya securing shareholders' approval for the purchase. According to Sentral REIT, it is of the view that it is an opportune time to divest the property as it has been vacant since July 2022. "The proposed disposal will provide Sentral REIT with financial flexibility to pursue yield accretive investments or, in the absence of appropriate investments, to pare down existing borrowings for enhanced returns to unitholders. "The disposal consideration was arrived at, on a 'willing buyer willing seller' basis, and it is the best offer price from prospective purchasers after various rounds of negotiation," It said. It said the net proceeds from the proposed disposal will be utilised to pursue accretive commercial assets within 12 months of the completion date or to pare down existing borrowings.

MNRB shares jump 11pct on Q1 profit surge

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of MNRB Holdings Bhd jumped 11.18 per cent in morning trade after the reinsurance and takaful group posted an 82.7 per cent surge in net profit for the first quarter ended June 30, 2025 (1Q25). The counter opened 18 sen or 10.59 per cent higher at RM1.88 before briefly touching RM1.89. It was last traded at RM1.88 at press time with 1.19 million shares changing hand, its busiest day in over three months. Main Market-listed MNRB began the year at RM2.23, hitting a high of RM2.27 and a low of RM1.69. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen 33 sen, or 13.90 per cent, valuing the company at RM1.48 billion. The group said the stronger quarterly earnings were driven by improved underwriting performance, higher net investment income, greater contributions from associates and lower operating expenses. Quarterly revenue rose 13.76 per cent to RM975.56 million from RM857.58 million a year earlier, supported by higher insurance and takaful contributions across its reinsurance, general takaful, family takaful and retakaful operations. No dividend was declared. On its outlook, MNRB, which operates Takaful Ikhlas, said the newly imposed eight per cent service tax on financial services could marginally impact profitability in the family takaful segment through higher distribution and investment management costs. "The general takaful segment is largely not impacted by this development as the contributions are already subject to service tax," it said. Despite the potential headwind, MNRB said it remains confident in its long-term growth prospects and will continue to focus on balancing its portfolio across the reinsurance, takaful and retakaful segments.
