Stronger exports lift Malaysia's July trade to record RM266bil
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's trade hit a record high of RM265.92 billion in July, up 3.8 per cent from RM234.85 billion a year earlier on stronger exports that climbed to their strongest level in nearly three years. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) said exports rose 6.8 per cent to RM140.45 billion, the strongest monthly performance since September 2022, reflecting sustained global demand for Malaysian goods. "Imports edged up by 0.6 per cent to RM125.47 billion, while trade surplus continued for the 63rd consecutive month, valued at RM14.98 billion for July 2025," it said in a statement. Exports of electrical and electronic (E&E) products jumped by nearly RM12 billion to RM63.31 billion, a 22.5 per cent year-on-year increase. E&E remained the key driver of export growth, alongside optical and scientific equipment and processed foods, all of which posted record values. Other contributors included machinery, equipment and parts, as well as palm oil-based manufactured products By destination, Miti said exports to all key trading partners namely Asean, China, the United States (US), Taiwan and the European Union registered positive growth, with exports to Taiwan reaching its highest value to date. Exports to free trade agreement partners also expanded, led by Mexico and South Korea, supported by higher E&E exports. For the January–July 2025 period, trade rose 4.7 per cent year-on-year to RM1.731 trillion, with exports up 4.3 per cent to RM900.47 billion and imports increasing 5.1 per cent to RM830.16 billion. This resulted in a trade surplus of RM70.32 billion, the highest cumulative value to date. Miti said Malaysia's trade performance in the first seven months of 2025 reflected a cautiously improving global trade outlook. It added that the US decision to cut reciprocal tariffs on Malaysian exports to 19 per cent from 25 per cent underscored the country's disciplined trade diplomacy. "This tariff rate, which is roughly in line with the rest of our peers in Asean, will continue to support our competitiveness. "Despite global trade and US tariff headwinds, Malaysia's steady trade performance has contributed to the expansion of the nation's gross domestic product by 4.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2025."

TVET Graduates Equipped To Drive High-Value Industries
IPOH, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates are being equipped to drive high-value industries, said Datuk Dr Megat Sany Megat Ahmad Supian, deputy secretary-general (Policy) of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). He said that TVET graduates play a vital role in maintaining the country's socio-economic balance and fostering a competitive and productive work environment, rather than merely filling job vacancies. 'To that end, five strategic thrusts have been outlined in the National TVET Policy 2030, providing a strong foundation that we are implementing comprehensively,' he said in his speech at the 53rd Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) Convocation Ceremony, which was also attended by its director, Dr Salmi Che Meh, at Dewan Jubilee Perak today. Megat Sany added that the ministry prioritises structured, synergistic, and highly accountable governance, while also emphasising quality and international-standard education pathways to ensure TVET students are globally competitive. He said the MOHE has also reinforced high-impact strategic collaborations with the industry to enhance the quality of TVET programmes and has emphasised sustainable funding to ensure stable financial support for facility development, faculty capacity building, and industry-relevant research. 'The ministry is determined to position TVET as a primary career choice, shifting public perception from viewing it as a last resort to recognising it as a strategic pathway focused on skills, high impact, and future readiness. Megat Sany added that the MOHE has been actively implementing various initiatives to enhance the facilities of educational institutions under the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (JPPKK). According to him, the government has approved an allocation of RM431.9 million under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for the implementation of 111 upgrading projects. These include the construction and enhancement of laboratories, training workshops, lecture halls, and digital facilities for students. Meanwhile, a total of 1,820 Politeknik Ungku Omar graduates received their diplomas and certificates at the convocation ceremony, which began today and will continue until Thursday.
