Karnataka BJP legislators and Parliamentarians held a protest here on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar over the stampede in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives.
The protest held in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha premises here was led by the leader of opposition in legislative assembly and council R Ashoka and Chalavadi Narayanaseamy.
The BJP leaders called for legal action against the two senior Congress leaders, holding them directly responsible for the tragedy.
Carrying placards and shouting slogans, the protesters accused the government of negligence that led to the deaths.
Slogans were also shouted, calling the CM and Deputy CM "murderers".
The BJP leaders are also planning to meet Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot soon, seeking his intervention and calling for the dismissal of the government The stampede occurred on June 4 evening in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium here, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident.
Speaking during the protest, Ashoka demanded justice for the deceased as he called Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar "Real Culprits of Bengaluru (RCB)".
"Businessman Vijay Mallya earlier promoted and launched the team RCB, which is Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but the CM and Deputy CM are the new RCB -- Real Culprits of Bengaluru," he said.
Hitting out at the government for suspending five police officers, including the then Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, in connection with the incident, Ashoka said, the BJP stands with the police and will fight for them, as there was no fault on part of the police.
The victory celebrations were organised despite police denying permission to it, he alleged. The loss of eleven lives is nothing but a "government sponsored murder".
He said those in power including CM and Deputy CM cannot rule the state on the dead bodies of eleven people. "You have no moral right, you have lost it. You are accused in the eyes of law," he added.
The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister behaved like "brand ambassadors" for the RCB, the LoP said, despite deaths the victory celebration events were held.
"First death happened at 3:15 pm (on June 4), the victory celebration programme started at 4:30-5 pm, by then seven to eight deaths had happened....then the Deputy CM went to the stadium to attend another celebration event, where crackers worth Rs 1 crore were bursted around 6:30-7 pm. After 11 deaths crackers were burst, do you even have humanity?" he asked.
Noting that police officials were suspended as they failed to inform the CM and Deputy CM about the deaths, Ashoka said news channels were providing live updates on the incident and deaths, the information were available on mobile phones. "What were your PAs or secretaries or officials doing?" Holding CM and Deputy CM directly responsible, he said the entire government should go, including the Ministers, Chief Secretary and officials.
Deaths are the sixth guarantee of this government (after five populist guarantee schemes), Ashoka said, citing the deaths of officials, officials, farmer suicides, meternal deaths.
"We have planned to meet the Governor soon demanding the dismissal of the government," he added.

'World now knows the truth': Shashi Tharoor-led delegation on Operation Sindoor wraps up US visit
The all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, wrapped up the last leg of its multi-nation tour in the United States after meeting Vice President JD Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The delegation arrived in the US on June 3 for a three-day visit. It held meetings on Capitol Hill and in Washington and briefed American officials and leaders about India's Operation Sindoor and the nation's stance on cross-border terrorism. Before the US, the Tharoor-led delegation visited Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and Brazil. The group includes Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Gants Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), and India's former Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Sandhu. In a post on X late on Sunday, Shashi Tharoor wrote in Hindi, "If you are born a hundred times, you will do it a hundred times; I will love my country with all my heart; Whatever we could do, we did it "A Watan"; The whole world now knows the truth." "On behalf of all the member, I express gratitude to the motherland and the lovers of India in the country and abroad who listened with open ears and accepted with open heart that we are lovers of non-violence but only until Hind!" he added. The Tharoor-led group met Vice President Vance, Landau, House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership, India Caucus leadership and Senate Foreign Relations Committee leaders. The meeting with Vance, which was held at the White House for about 25 minutes on Thursday, was described as an excellent meeting" by Shashi Tharoor. He said that Vance was "warm and welcoming and receptive". 'Vance expressed complete understanding, first of all, outrage of what happened in Pahalgam and support and respect for India's restrained response in Operation Sindoor,' Tharoor told news agency PTI after the meeting. Following the delegation's meeting with Landau on Friday, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement that the Deputy Secretary of State "reaffirmed the United States' strong support of India in the fight against terrorism and the strategic partnership between the two countries". 'We discussed the US-India strategic relationship, including expanding trade and commercial ties to foster growth and prosperity for both countries,' Landau said. The Indian Embassy said in a statement that during the meeting with Landau, the Tharoor-led delegation explained to him India's stance against terrorism, with Operation Sindoor being launched in response to the brutal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. On its last day of the scheduled meetings, the delegation also paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at this statue outside the Indian Embassy in Washington. Afterwards, Tharoor posted on X, "It is striking how many world capitals are adorned with statues or busts of the Mahatma, the 20th century's greatest apostle of peace, nonviolence, and human freedom." The Indian government launched the initiative of sending seven delegations, with members cutting across party lines, to travel to 32 countries and the EU headquarters in Brussels. The goal of this global outreach program is to put forth India's resolve to tackle terrorism against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor. The Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and carried out targeted strikes at nine terror infrastructures linked to outfits such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, etc., in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Baisaran near Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. During Operation Sindoor, more than 100 terrorists were killed. Following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan attempted to launch a retaliatory military action, with cross-border shelling, unarmed aerial vehicles, and drones across J&K, and border regions. However, most of these attacks were thwarted by the Indian armed forces and the nation's air defence system. After four days of intense cross-border fighting, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on May 10.

CM Naidu for incentives to AP families with more kids
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh, which once amended its laws to bar people with more than two kids from contesting panchayat and municipal elections, now plans to incentivise having larger families as part of a strategy to combat dropping fertility rates and shift focus to what CM N Chandrababu Naidu terms "investment in human capital". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "I am looking at giving financial incentives by taking a family as a unit. The bigger families may get higher incentives," Naidu told TOI ahead of completing a year in office on June 12. "As part of the 'Zero Poverty P4' initiative, I have already rolled out an interesting model in which wealthier people will adopt poor families. This will not only bridge income disparities, but also ensure welfare of the entire family," he said. The four-time CM, who has been an advocate of population management, said the current demographics in the southern states require govts to revisit their strategies. "Fertility rates in AP need to increase. At the present rate, AP will face serious problems… That is why I am thinking of bigger families," he said. Naidu announced recently that female employees could avail of maternity leave any number of times. "It was limited to two times only. We have removed the restrictions," he said. The state govt also made it mandatory for every organisation to provide childcare centres at workplaces. Naidu announced financial aid of Rs 15,000 for every schoolchild. "We give this money directly to the mothers of students. Apart from this, the NDA govt in AP is planning to announce financial assistance to couples for having more kids." The two-child policy previously applicable to prospective candidates for panchayat and municipal polls has been reversed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In 2023, Sikkim announced incentives for indigenous people to have more children. Mizoram, too, has been encouraging tribal couples to have more than two kids.
