Mosquitoes have been found as far north as Shetland, according to a citizen science project which studied the insects.
Scientists at the University of Glasgow received more than 700 reports of mosquitoes across Scotland, which found they can live even in colder months including December.
The project, which was awarded a £1.25 million grant from UK Research and Innovation and Defra in 2023, is the first to assess the risk of mosquito-borne pathogen emergence in Scotland under current and future climate change scenarios.
Since May 2024, members of the public have sent researchers hundreds of images of 21 species of mosquito, and pictures of bites.
Mosquitoes are a natural part of Scottish ecosystems and can have positive impacts on the environment through their role in food webs, according to researchers. They said they do not pose a health risk at present, and can be mistaken for midges.
As mosquito activity in Scotland picks up moving towards summer, the Mosquito Scotland team are urging the public to continue sending in sightings, which will enable the project to accurately track and understand the ecology of the insects, after they began to spread avian malaria in England.
Sightings of mosquitoes were sent to the Mosquito Scotland team every month in 2024, with reports peaking in the spring and summer but also continuing in cooler months right up to December, according to reports submitted online.
Mosquitoes were spotted across the length and breadth of Scotland, with a sighting in the Shetland Isles now the northernmost record for the UK.
Reports show they are most commonly reported in woodland areas – particularly in pine forests in the east of Scotland, as well as indoors in cities.
Researchers were able to confirm three mosquito species, Aedes cantans, Aedes punctor and Aedes rusticus, were the main source of nuisance biting.
Researchers aim to find out which mosquito species are present, where they are found, whether they are harbouring any diseases, or if they could become infected by pathogens that may expand into the UK with climate change.
Mosquitoes can be found in colder, more remote parts of Scotland, where they are most active from May to October.
Dr Georgia Kirby said: 'There were several areas of Scotland where we received lots of reports of bites but very few photos of the culprits – understandably, as most people don't want to hold still for a photo while they're being bitten by insects.
'We had suspected that midges or clegs could be responsible, but in our follow-up investigations we invariably found that these locations were swarming with mosquitoes – proving that people in Scotland are good at recognising them and distinguishing them from more familiar insects.
'Most of these sites were areas of dense woodland, which is a key habitat for several aggressive human-biting mosquito species.'
Researchers advised using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves during summer months when mosquitoes are active in forested areas, which also protects against other biting pests such as ticks and midges.
Heather Ferguson, professor of infectious disease ecology at the University of Glasgow, who leads the project, said: 'We are delighted and grateful for the positive response and enthusiasm from members of the public.
'Their participation has helped fill large gaps in our understanding of mosquitoes both in Scotland and the UK, which is allowing us to build a picture of how the biodiversity benefits, and any potential risks, posed by these species will respond to environmental change.
'We would love to hear more from the public in 2025.'

Fraunhofer CAP helps provide support for student training, carries out research and development, and also wins contracts and grants. In the last year alone, it delivered more than £5 million of research and development projects for industry. Recently The Scottish Government convened the industry-led Scottish Critical Technologies Supercluster Advisory Board to progress and promote key technical areas in which Scotland excels, such as photonics, quantum technologies, semiconductors and sensing, all areas in which Fraunhofer CAP is heavily involved. Simon Andrews, executive director of Fraunhofer UK Research said the facilities photonics and quantum expertise has helped Scotland's industry stay at the forefront of innovation. He said: 'We have proven the success of the Fraunhofer model here in Scotland, as evidenced by the large number of projects we deliver for industrial partners. 'Our photonics and quantum expertise is helping industry stay at the forefront of innovation and this ministerial visit demonstrates the importance of the part we have to play in the economy. "Both The Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise are key stakeholders for our organisation and have provided support since our inception in 2012."

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has labelled a three-year wait for crucial mental health support for the son of his Stirling candidate as 'heartbreaking' - and said ministers required more transparency about the scale of the issue. ‌ The Observer shared last week the story of the issues faced by the family of Dr Kainde Manji - standing in the Holyrood poll for the seat next year - as she urged other parents and carers to share their stories with an inquiry into ADHD and autism support. ‌ The Scottish Parliament Health, Social Care and Sport Committee is undertaking an inquiry into Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) pathways and support. ‌ Dr Manji said her son had been waiting for a diagnosis for ASD since P1 and the family were no closer to answers three years on. Speaking exclusively to the Observer on a visit to the Riverbank Resource Centre to meet centre users and see the work of local charity Artlink Central - Mr Sarwar was critical of Scottish Government efforts to tackle the issue of mental health waiting lists. He said: 'It's a heartbreaking case, but as Kainde will testify, it's not an isolated one. 'This is a situation impacting families across the country; I was at an ADHD group in Dundee where people were really struggling, parents telling stories of the issues trying to get people diagnosed and being forced to go private. 'Many can't afford to borrow from friends or family to go private and they shouldn't have to. We need to make sure we are doing the appropriate intervention both in terms of getting the diagnosis and then the adequate treatment pathways required. It also needs to be recognised the knock-on impact that has on education and home life. The issue requires a holistic approach with joined-up thinking with a government that is serious about doing its job properly.' Mr Sarwar also took aim at the categorisation of some young people's mental health cases, with health chiefs in Forth Valley among those across Scotland in stating some cases are dealt with by paediatric services and not within CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). ‌ 'I think the government withdrawing ADHD and autism from the CAMHS waiting times is a big part of the problem so what we need is honesty and transparency about the waiting times,' he continued. 'We have to be really careful that we compare like-with-like and don't have government manipulation of statistics to tell a different story from the reality on the ground. 'If they are going to withdraw ADHD and autism from CAMHS waiting lists, then they must be transparent about the length of waiting time, the speed of diagnosis and treatment plans for those people but right now, that is not what is happening.' ‌ In response to Mr Sarwar's remarks, Mental Wellbeing Minister Tom Arthur said: 'Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) support children and young people experiencing significant mental health problems. "CAMHS is not the correct service for children seeking support and a diagnosis for a neurodevelopmental condition, such as ADHD, unless they have a co-existing mental health condition. ‌ 'While we are meeting our targets for CAMHS, I am clear that long waits for support, particularly for children, are unacceptable. "We recognise there has been an increased demand for neurodevelopmental support and that is why we are providing an additional £500,000 this year to improve access to care for children, young people and families. 'We expect health boards to deliver services in a way that ensures children receive the right support from specialists – and as quickly as possible – and we are also continuing to work with health boards and local authorities to improve the quality of data available.' ‌ Responding to Dr Manji's case and comments, an NHS Forth Valley spokeswoman said: 'Significant investment has been made in developing and improving mental health services and support for children and young people across the area. 'This, along with other changes, has led to NHS Forth Valley having some of the lowest waiting times in Scotland for CAMHS and meeting or exceeding the national target since February 2024. Ninety per cent of children and young people referred are seen within 18 weeks. 'However, like other NHS Boards across Scotland, we have seen a significant increase in referrals for children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism or ADHD. 'These children are normally referred to our paediatric service not CAMHS unless they also have a mental health condition. 'Due to the large increase in demand, some families are experiencing longer waiting times for neurodevelopment services and work is currently underway to explore options to increase capacity and reduce waiting times. However, it is important to highlight that families do not need a formal diagnosis of autism or ADHD to access additional support for their child as a range of services and support for children with neurodevelopment conditions is provided by local councils, education and some charitable organisations.'

Dramatic rise in whale and marine mammal strandings in Scotland

The number of marine mammals stranded in Scotland has risen dramatically in the past 30 years, a study has found. From 1992 to 2022, 5,147 cetaceans died on Scottish shores, and a new paper shows steep increases in the rate of strandings of up to 800% in some species, continuing exponentially every year. The paper, by the University of Glasgow's Scottish marine animal stranding scheme (Smass), follows this summer's extraordinary sequence of rarely seen, deep-diving whale species stranding on northern European shores. Over a period of just over two weeks, 36 beaked whales and pilot whales were found in locations from western and southern Ireland to Orkney, Norfolk, the Netherlands and southern Sweden. The animals appeared to have entered shallow seas where they could not forage for their usual foods such as deep-sea squid. The widespread locations of these events is provoking serious concern, especially among volunteer groups who work to save the stranded whales – without success, in all of the above cases. 'Clusters of beaked whales should raise suspicions,' said Dr Andrew Brownlow, the director of Smass. It is believed that sonic disturbance can cause deep-diving whales to strand. Rachel Lennon, the lead author of the paper published in the journal Scientific Reports, said that in Scotland 'sources of anthropogenic noise are abundant, including seismic survey air guns and drilling from industrial construction'. The new paper does not cite concerns that military sonar exercises in the open ocean are a known factor in such events. Brownlow noted that a 'globally unprecendented number' of 118 stranded beaked whales off Ireland and western Scotland in 2018 was traced to a single sound source off the continental shelf. The paper appears only weeks after Smass scientists attended the strandings of four northern bottlenose whales – another beaked whale species – and a pod of 23 pilot whales on the Orkney islands. The pilot whale stranding came almost exactly a year after a record 77 of the same species stranded on the same Orkney beach. A total of 150 animals have mass stranded off Scotland this year. Smass scientists are also concerned that the number of stranded baleen whales such as fin, minke and humpback whales has risen sharply over the survey period. This may be due to more animals moving north as waters warm due to climate breakdown. It may also be a delayed result of the cessation of whale hunting – Lennon noted that 'as populations begin to recover from the impacts of historic whaling, reports of entanglement have increased'. As surface feeders, baleen whales are prone to being caught in fishing gear, leading to protracted deaths from starvation or infection. The paper also shows an increase in the number of stranded common dolphins and harbour porpoises, which can be vulnerable to collisions with leisure craft. 'Clearly the oceans are changing,' Brownlow said, 'and Scotland is on the edge of this flux. We now get sperm whales calving off our shores whereas we never saw females in these northern waters before. Beaked whales only used to be recorded in small numbers in the autumn. Temperature, salinity, distribution of prey, oceanic heatwaves – the pattern is moving, and we need to be better at working out where these animals are, and when. 'This is the new normal, and we must tread as softly as we can.'
