Man charged in alleged kidnapping in Airdrie has prior child porn convictions

Investigators believe a Calgary man accused of kidnapping a 12-year-old boy picked him up near the Cooper's Crossing neighbourhood in Airdrie on Monday evening. A Calgary man accused of kidnapping a 12-year-old boy in Airdrie had twice been convicted of child pornography-related offences, court documents show. Zain Alnoor Merchant, 37, is facing nine charges after RCMP say a child escaped an abduction when a group of teens arranged to meet the man in a To Catch a Predator-style scheme. ADVERTISEMENT Merchant's most recent charges include kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual contact with a child and three counts of failing to comply with a prohibition order. According to investigators, the teens and the man exchanged messages over Snapchat before meeting in person near the Coopers Crossing neighbourhood in Airdrie on Monday evening. 'The investigation has revealed that there are numerous youth — ages 12, 13, so quite young — that have been involved in a 'catch the predators' scheme. So apparently this is a new scheme on social media,' said Cpl. Gina Slaney with Alberta RCMP. The boy willingly got into the man's vehicle, police say, and the man drive off with the teen still inside. The boy was able to escape when the vehicle stopped at a red light a short time later. Multiple teens and other witnesses phoned 911 and the man was later arrested in northeast Calgary. Police file photo Police (File photo) (Jordan Kanygin, CTV Calgary) 'In my knowledge, this has not been done before here in Airdrie. In my service time of 23 years, I haven't been involved in a similar investigation where we have somebody setting up To Catch a Predator or anything along those lines,' Cpl. Christopher Hrynyk of the Airdrie RCMP said Wednesday. 'This is a very unique incident,' he added. The Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit confirmed the accused had previously been the subject of multiple of investigations. Previous convictions Court documents obtained by CTV News show Merchant was first charged with possession of child pornography in May of 2021. He was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison in March of 2022. Documents also show Merchant was sentenced to 11 months in jail in September of 2023 for accessing child pornography. Part of his previous sentencing includes orders prohibiting Merchant from communicating with anyone under the age of 16 without parental supervision, which he is accused of breaching. Duty counsel appeared briefly in Airdrie court on Thursday afternoon on Merchant's behalf. He remains in custody.

Alberta boy who tried to 'catch a predator' lucky to escape after alleged abduction, police say

Article content A 12-year-old boy who escaped the vehicle of an alleged abductor in Alberta after he and a group of friends employed a 'catch a predator' scheme was incredibly lucky, says a police child exploitation expert. Article content This appears to be the 'very first' time minors have employed the scheme, popularized by NBC's To Catch a Predator reality television series, said Staff Sgt. Mark Auger from the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team's internet child exploitation unit. Article content Article content Article content 'This could have been a horrible outcome,' Auger said Thursday. Article content Article content 'Any time you reach out to a random person, there's risk of compromise just in a conversation. Then you elevate that to meeting them somewhere in public…. I think it's a million to one that that child wasn't hurt.' Article content The 'risk (of losing control) was off the charts' for the 12-year-old, Auger said. Article content The boy was part of a group of 10 youngsters who started an online conversation with the suspect and arranged to meet him via Snapchat. They met in Airdrie on Monday evening. Article content 'I understand he got in (the man's vehicle) voluntarily,' Auger said of the 12-year-old, noting the group of children was trying to expose the driver as a child predator. Article content Article content Article content While they might have had good intentions and thought they were doing the right thing, 'the ends don't justify the means,' he said. 'At the end of the day all we ask as police is be a good witness. Report it to the police of jurisdiction. That is what we expect. That is all that we should hold you accountable for.' Article content The reality television series the kids were emulating involves law enforcement officials trying to catch predators, he said. 'It is run like a sting, but it's done by police officers.' Article content In Monday's case, the youngster approached the man's vehicle and got in it while one of his accomplices shot video of the event. Article content 'When things went south, I think there was quite a bit of panic,' said RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney. 'Numerous people called 911. Some kids and some other bystanders. I think once they realized what had happened, thankfully they didn't just run and be scared. They actually did do the right thing and called, and we were in the area. It was just luck (and) good timing.'
