Air Canada, union at impasse with strike deadline looming

Reutersa day ago
MONTREAL, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The prospect of a systemwide work stoppage by Air Canada's (AC.TO), opens new tab unionized flight attendants loomed large on Friday with a strike deadline just hours away, despite a government plea for the two sides to return to the bargaining table.
Canada's largest carrier has said it expects to cancel 500 flights by the end of the day, ahead of a threatened strike just before 1:00 a.m. ET on Saturday, leaving some 100,000 passengers to find travel alternatives.
FlightAware data showed Air Canada had cancelled 164 flights as of 11:20 a.m. ET on Friday (1520 GMT).
The carrier's 10,000 flight attendants are gearing up to walk off the job over stalled contract talks. The union is demanding higher wages and compensation for unpaid work.
A strike would hit Canada's tourism sector during the height of the summer travel season and test the minority Liberal government of Prime Minister Mark Carney, which has been asked by the carrier to intervene.
Recording studio owner Robyn Flynn, 38, told Reuters that her Friday afternoon flight from St. John's in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to Montreal had been delayed twice. Despite the inconvenience, she said she backed the attendants.
"They deserve a salary increase ...and if our flight gets cancelled, I 100% blame Air Canada, not the flight attendants," said Flynn, travelling with her three-year-old daughter.
The Canada Labour Code gives Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu the right to ask the country's Industrial Relations Board to impose binding arbitration in the interests of protecting the economy.
Although the board is independent, it routinely agrees to request for arbitration once it has studied the matter, a process that can take a few days.
The Toronto region Board of Trade called on Ottawa to step in, saying a strike would hurt Canada's global reputation.
Under Justin Trudeau, Carney's predecessor, the government intervened quickly last year to head off rail and dock strikes that threatened to cripple the economy.
"(Ottawa) might decide to use that, but it's not as pressing an economic issue for the country as when the railway or the ports were on strike," said Rafael Gomez, director of the University of Toronto's Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources. "The stakes are not as fraught."
The union said it would respond on Friday to Air Canada's demand for binding arbitration but seems unlikely to accept.
In a note, TD Cowen analyst Tom Fitzgerald estimated a three-day strike could cost the airline C$300 million in EBITDA, referring to earnings before interest, depreciation, taxes and amortization.
Shares in the airline were trading up by just over 1% at 12:00 p.m. ET on Friday on the stock exchange.
The dispute hinges on the way airlines compensate flight attendants. Most have traditionally paid them only when planes are in motion.
But in their latest contract negotiations, flight attendants in North America have sought compensation for hours worked, including for tasks such as boarding passengers and waiting around the airport before and between flights.
Air Canada and its low-cost affiliate Air Canada Rouge normally carry about 130,000 customers a day. Air Canada is also the non-U.S. carrier with the largest number of flights to the U.S., despite recent cutbacks in travel there from Canada due to trade tensions.

Chili's fans fume over shocking 'shrinkflation'... 'how could they do this to me?'

Chili's is under fire for offering what one social media user has called 'tiny a** portions' of quesadillas. The customer ranted about his Chili's DoorDash order in a Reddit post on August 8, claiming it was an example of 'shrinkflation.' Shrinkflation is when products shrink in size or quantity while the price remains the same or even increases. 'I ordered a brisket casadilla [sic] and it's the size my child would eat when the hell did they cut portion sizes and jack up prices of the quesadilla?,' the user wrote. Other users are backing up the post creator, claiming they would send the food back if they received something so 'ridiculous.' 'It was the size of my hand when I was 6. Now it's half the size of my hand. I don't understand how chilis could do this to me,' a customer wrote. 'Wow, they're about the size of my mini pancakes I made for my kid this morning,' another commenter responded. Another user defended Chili's, however, saying that the quesadillas are the same size but they simply look smaller because the packaging has got bigger. Chili's has been the topic of conversation for months since pulling off what some say is ' the best restaurant comeback of all time.' An increasing number of brands have been accused of shrinkflation over the last few years following the rise of inflation. It's caused backlash from social media users, with some even threatening to boycott companies they believe are guilty of shrinking items while keeping the price the same. Social media has been accusing Chili's of shrinkflation for at least a year. 'I would simply never eat at that place again in my life,' a Reddit user wrote last year. The Brisket Quesadilla comes with eight quesadillas made with smoked pulled brisket, cheese, jalapeños and BBQ sauce — served with pico, sour cream and ranch. Chili's is also known for its meaty offerings like the Oldtimer — a popular cheeseburger that was altered this year. Following a successful fiscal third quarter, its parent company, Brinker International, announced Chili's delivered a strong fiscal fourth quarter ending on June 25 — surpassing analysts' expectations. Multiple social media users backed up the Reddit post creator's shrinkflation accusations Multiple restaurant chains, including Chipotle, have been accused of shrinking portion sizes. Some accusations have even ended in lawsuits. A New York resident sued Arby's last December — claiming the chain shrunk its fry and beverage sizes without changing prices or informing customers. The lawsuit is still ongoing. In April, a customer also sued The Cheesecake Factory, alleging the chain shrunk its cake slices. Daily Mail has reached out to Chili's for comment regarding its quesadillas and is awaiting response.

Western US ranch four times bigger than New York City goes on sale for $79.5M

Here's a home where the Buffalo roam — but you're going to need about $80 million of you want to join them. A giant Western ranch four times bigger than New York City and twice the size of London has hit the market. Central Wyoming 's sprawling Pathfinder Ranches totals over 916,000 acres and includes fully working cattle ranches, a main lodge, and a church. The main home has original hardwood floors, stone and wood walls, and beamed ceilings, and is for sale with local luxury realtor Michael Swan from Swan Land Company. The price tag is a cool $79.5 million. 'The sale of Pathfinder Ranches represents an unprecedented opportunity to own and operate one of few remaining large cattle operations in the American West,' Ryan Lance, President of Pathfinder Ranches, told the Daily Mail. 'Pathfinder represents a piece of our country's pioneering spirit and a chance to make a real contribution to both modern ranching practices and conservation.' The ranches span four counties and cover around 1 percent of Wyoming. The land is nestled between the Ferris, Pedro and Green mountain ranges, and it counts the Pathfinder Reservoir and a section of the Sweetwater River as part of its property. The property is one of the largest working ranches in the Rocky Mountains. The ranch is also home to the nation's first habitat conservation bank for sage-grouse — the largest ever approved by the US Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service. The nine-bedroom, 7.5-bath lodge was designed with an open layout, a full bar, a game room, gourmet kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Ferris and Pedro Mountains. The land hosts 12 ranches in total, hosting approximately 3,400 cows, 180 bulls and 130 saddle horses. The listing reads: 'Pathfinder Ranches is a testament to stewardship. 'Past stewards have worked this ground, building healthy soil, nurturing wildlife habitats, and protecting fragile species such as the greater sage-grouse through thoughtful grazing practices and regenerative efforts. 'This property is a true king maker.' The listing continues: 'The next owner will inherit a legacy, with the chance to make a lasting impact on the land, the industry, the culture, and the state of Wyoming; to experience the simple wealth of clean air and wide-open spaces; and to immediately take their place among the major players in the cattle world.' The ranch's broker, Scott Williams, said a ranch like this is not built overnight, but 'takes generations of grit, vision, and dedication.' 'This legacy property is about impact on the land, the industry, the culture, and the state of Wyoming,' he said. Pathfinder is larger even than the fictional 'Yellowstone' Dutton Ranch from Taylor Sheridan's famous television series, which is somewhere between 775,000 to 825,000 acres. Meanwhile, another Wyoming ranch with ties to Ernest Hemingway listed in early June. Set against the stunning Bighorn Mountains, the ranch Hemingway used as a writer's retreat was listed for $29 million. The historic Spear Ranch, which dates back to the 1800s, is celebrated for its tranquil seclusion, breathtaking vistas and deep ties to both literary and Western heritage. It spans over 300 acres of pristine landscape and includes a 7,500-square-foot New England–style main residence, multiple guest cabins and a collection of rustic outbuildings. A nearby guest retreat is where Hemingway sought solitude and completed the first draft of A Farewell to Arms in 1928. Ranches are all the rage in recent months. In New Mexico, a ranch more than half the size of the state of Rhode Island recently sold after being listed for a nine-figure sum. The 540,000-acre Great Western Ranch was put on the market for $142 million in 2024 by the Horton family, the development dynasty that spent the last decade building the mammoth property. In July, the asking price had dropped to $115 million, but the actual selling price remains unclear.

Unprecedented strike action shows strength of feeling in racing

S o, is this it? For decades British racing has been signalling distress only to be ignored by the government and still survive. The unprecedented 'strike' whereby the British Horseracing Authority will cancel all four race meetings on Wednesday, September 10, to protest against a betting tax hike comes after long years of ebbing tide. Unless the government changes the way it blows, this time we really could be on the rocks. The plan, as explained in The Sunday Times, is fascinating on many counts. For its shock tactics, for it being the first significant move since Lord Allen took up his BHA chair, and for its timing on the eve of the classic Doncaster meeting at which Sir Keir Starmer last year became the first prime minister to attend the St Leger since Winston Churchill in 1953. But as important as any, it represents a unified front from racing's two biggest racecourse groups, the Jockey Club and Arena Racing, the former owning Kempton Park and Carlisle, the latter Uttoxeter and Doncaster.
