Heat selects Jakučionis in the 2025 NBA Draft as fans put Durant, Butler drama in the past
Wednesday night at the Kaseya Center, Miami Heat fans spilled into the arena for the team's draft party. Amid pop-a-shot games and meet and greets, they were eager to see what magic the Miami front room would conjure after last season's lackluster performance, culminating in their 4-0 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Finals.
And that magic came when the Miami Heat selected Kasparas Jakučionis. Now, fans are revved up and ready to go.
Jakučionis — the freshman guard from the University of Illinois — was originally projected as a lottery pick, but fell to 20th on draft night when the Heat snagged him in its first-round selection.
'I'm feeling ecstatic because I didn't think Kasparas Jakučionis would be here,' said lifelong fan Kevin Cancelo. 'I think he could be a real difference-maker for the Heat. The playmaking ability that we don't have right now, I mean he's going to have an instant impact.'
The Heat's 2024-25 season, and now offseason, has been anything but uneventful. First, there was the Jimmy Butler saga, which culminated in his early February trade to the Golden State Warriors after months of back-and-forth drama — and a very public breakup — between the six-time NBA All-Star and the Heat.
'The Jimmy Butler situation, to me, was handled the best way it could be handled, especially with a player of that caliber,' longtime fan Jonathan Montoya said. 'Everybody knows his attitude. We got what was good enough for us during that time.' Montoya said he has been a fan of the Heat since 2003, and he's hoping to see 'an upgrade' from the team this upcoming season.
That upgrade could have come from the Heat's potential trade and acquisition of the 15-time NBA All-Star Kevin Durant, which Montoya said he thought would elevate the team and provide support to Heat leaders Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. The offer reportedly included Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Haywood Highsmith and Jaime Jaquez Jr., plus the 20th pick in Wednesday's NBA Draft.
In the end, it wasn't convincing enough for the Phoenix Suns, who ended up trading Durant to the Houston Rockets.
'With Kevin Durant, I thought the front office could have pushed a little bit harder to get him, but you know, I'm happy we got to keep all the young assets and be able to keep the draft picks,' 14-year-old from Fort Lauderdale Brad Hochberg told the Miami Herald. Hochberg and his family have been season ticket holders since he was three years old.
Now, things could be looking up for the Heat with their selection of Jakučionis. According to Jakučionis, who spoke to Miami media after his selection Wednesday night, he knows 'development is huge there [Miami], and I think I can pull a lot. Just help to make the team better, win as much as we can, and I'm ready to work.'

"Someone Investigate How Boston Keeps Getting Away With This Sh**": NBA Fans React To Celtics Trading Jrue Holiday
"Someone Investigate How Boston Keeps Getting Away With This Sh**": NBA Fans React To Celtics Trading Jrue Holiday originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Celtics have begun their offseason moves by trading the two-time NBA champion, Jrue Holiday, to the Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks. This comes after the Celtics are reportedly looking to blow it all up and even listen to offers for their star players, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. Advertisement NBA fans could not believe that the Celtics managed to convert a veteran player into a promising young star and also get two second-round picks in the process. They took to social media and expressed their opinions about the Celtics' trade with the Blazers. "BROOOO WHY DO BOSTON ALWAYS GET THESE GOOD TRADES" "Someone investigate how Boston keeps getting away with this sh**" "WHY WOULD THE BLAZERS DO THIS?" "The Celtics get a young potential star for an aging vet, are you kidding me?" "THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS" However, not all fans felt that the Celtics got the better end of the deal. Some even believed that the Blazers managed to get a veteran defender in return for a player with shooting struggles. Advertisement "Celtics' downfall has begun." "Gave up your elite defender for a point guard who can barely shoot." "Blazers fleecing the Celtics lmaoooo what" "FLEECED BY THE BLAZERS!!!!" In my opinion, the Celtics got the better end of this deal. They got rid of Jrue Holiday's massive contract, where they could have been forced to pay him over $100 million over the next three seasons. Instead, they got a young star on an expiring contract who is owed only $27 million next season. The Celtics could tailor an extension with Simons that could be more financially feasible for them. Moreover, Jrue Holiday is 35 years old, and his contributions to the team are limited to the defensive end of the floor. He averaged only 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists on the Celtics this season. The Trail Blazers had seven players who averaged scoring in double digits this season, but Simons was the closest to an All-Star leap as he led all scorers for them, averaging 19.7 points per game. Advertisement With Tatum expected to be sidelined all of next season, Simons could finally take that leap with the Celtics this season. While it is more of a win-now move for the Blazers as they look to provide some veteran experience to their young roster, the Celtics have a higher ceiling on what they could get out of Simons in the future. This is not the first time Jrue Holiday has been traded to the Blazers. When Damian Lillard was traded to the Bucks, Jrue Holiday was sent in return to the Blazers. However, they re-routed him to the Celtics four days later as a part of a trade that brought Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams, and two future first-round picks to the Blazers. It seems like the Blazers are following the blueprint that the Rockets used with Fred VanVleet. Blazers might just benefit a lot from this trade as well. It will be interesting to see how this trade turns out for both teams. Mark Williams trade report: Hornets send center to Suns months after canceled Lakers deal
Charlotte Hornets starting center Mark Williams is on the move, seemingly for real this time. The Hornets are trading Williams to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for the No. 29 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft and a first-round pick in the 2029 NBA Draft, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The Suns (on behalf of the Hornets) went on to select Liam McNeeley out of UConn with the No. 29 pick. Advertisement Williams was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Dalton Knecht and Cam Reddish ahead of the trade deadline in February, but the Lakers announced two days later that the trade had been "rescinded due to failure to satisfy a condition of the trade." A person with knowledge of the decision told USA TODAY Sports that the trade fell through because Williams failed a physical. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information. 2025 NBA DRAFT LIVE UPDATES: Full list of NBA draft picks, analysis of first round That meant Williams returned to Charlotte, but not for long. He's now being sent to the Suns to help address the team's need for a big. The Suns, who acquired the No. 10 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft after trading Kevin Durant to the Rockets, drafted Duke center Khaman Maluach 10th overall Wednesday. Williams was drafted out of Duke with the 15th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft by Charlotte, where he's spent the first three years of his career. He averaged career-highs in points (15.3), rebounds (10.2) and assists (2.5) in 44 games (41 starts) last season, but a number of injuries have sidelined Williams for significant time to start his career. Advertisement He played in 43 games (17 starts) his rookie season and was limited to 19 games (all starts) his sophomore season with the Hornets after suffering a back injury. Through three seasons, he's played a total of 106 out of 246 total games. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
