Ahmedabad plane crash: ‘Felt like an earthquake, then there was fire, heard screams'

Indian Express19 hours ago

With belongings like table fans, shoes and books packed into bags they could find, clothes tied up in bedsheets, MBBS students and resident doctors of B J Medical College evacuated the buildings that were their place of comfort until Thursday afternoon.
The police barricades had extended further, controlling access as heavy-duty cranes began dislodging parts of the Air India AI 171 flight thrust into the concrete walls of the Attulyam hostels blackened with soot.
As scheduled passenger planes continued to fly overhead, Deep Davla, a first-year MBBS student rolled a suitcase, his friend Ritav from second-year carrying more belongings in a cardboard box meant for mangoes, to load on their scooter.
Deep Davla was on the third floor of the hostel building at the time of the crash. Wiping the sweat off his face in the sultry Saturday afternoon, he told The Indian Express, 'Pehele bhukamp jaisa laga, phir uske baad achanak se aag aa gayi, phir chillane ki aawaz aayi, phir hum seediyon se jaane ka try ki wahan bhi aag thi (first it felt like an earthquake, then suddenly there was a fire, and we could hear screaming… then we went towards the stairs, there was fire there as well'). The boys then came to the balcony and saw vehicles burning on the ground floor.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner also blasted through the hostel building Thursday afternoon.
'Then a vehicle close to us caught fire and we thought it was best to jump as there were more vehicles below. So we climbed down from the railings to the first floor and jumped from there then we jumped the boundary wall and ran,' he said.
Davla came to study at BJ Medical College from North Gujarat.
There were resident doctors from Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala and other states as well, who were vacating.
Tadie Mra, a PG student of Gujarat Cancer Research Institute (GCRI), hails from Arunachal Pradesh and had moved in only four days before the crash. As he got on to a bus with his belongings, he told The Indian Express, 'On the day of crash, I was having lunch at the mess. However, I got a call for an urgent biopsy that was to be done. I rushed there. And after I reached the hospital, the crash happened.'
Tadie said that two of his friends sustained injuries. 'They have not been able to sleep since this mishap. Such is the trauma,' he said.
Tadie said that they have got good accommodation at their college.
A senior official of the B J Medical College said that the process of vacating started Friday.
Official sources said that the blocks have been 'badly hit' and the buildings have become 'inhabitable'. Sources added that the students who had left the debilitated buildings have been provided other accommodations on the college campus itself. The students are now taking back their belongings from Attulyam blocks, sources said, adding that they were allowed to take their luggage after getting a green light from the police to enter the building.
An MBBS student from Kerala, who was wheeling a bag and carrying some belongings, said on condition of anonymity, 'The place is not livable anymore'.
An official of GCRI said, 'GCRI has two blocks in Attulyam and 100 students were staying. Some of them took their luggage on Friday and the rest moved it today.'
'Most of the students are taking belongings that are very essential like books and clothes along with important documents,' the official said.

Gujarat minister lauds forensic experts working overtime for DNA testing of plane crash victims

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who has been sharing timely and regular updates about DNA testing of the victims at Ahmedabad crash site, on Sunday penned a 'note of praise' for the dedicated team of forensic experts working relentlessly and tirelessly to confirm the identity of victims, by matching their DNA samples. After the ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner met with a devastating fate on June 12, killing 241 passengers barring a lucky one in the catastrophic crash, a team of 36 forensic experts have been tirelessly working, with many going beyond working hours, to locate and verify the remains of victims from among hundreds of charred bodies. Harsh Sanghavi took to X and wrote a heartfelt tribute for the forensic experts who have gone beyond the call of duty and are putting in extra hours to ensure that families of victims get the remains, as early as possible. 'Tribute to the Dedication of FSL Forensic Experts truly remarkable is the personal sacrifices being made by the team of 36 dedicated forensic experts,' he wrote. He made a special mention of a forensic expert whose mother is currently fighting for her life, with only 20 per cent heart function, and was scheduled for urgent surgery and said, 'despite the personal turmoil, this expert remains committed to DNA testing efforts". He further noted: 'Eight of the women experts on the team are mothers of children aged 3 years or less. Despite the challenges of caring for their young ones, they have put their family's needs aside to focus on the critical task at hand.' 'Their selflessness and dedication to duty are a testament to their professionalism and compassion. We salute these unsung heroes who, despite their personal struggles, are working tirelessly day and night to help bring closure to the families affected by the tragedy,' he added. Notably, the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where DNA testing is being done remains in the thick of chaos as family members of deceased fliers scramble to get the DNA verification done at the earliest possible. Authorities are finding it hard to convince them about the 'delay' in handover of bodies and remains. Meanwhile, 22 more DNA samples were matched till Sunday noon, taking the total number of matched DNA samples to 44, so far.

Ahmedabad plane crash victims' families demand 'full bodies' after 2 heads found in one body bag

As authorities begin to hand over the remains of the Ahmedabad plane crash victims, grieving families have reportedly called for the release of the full remaiins of bodies of the victims. A total of 270 bodies were brought to the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad after the deadly Air India plane crash on Thursday. Of the 270 bodies, 241 were passengers and cabin crew on the London-bound flight. The remaining were killed when the plane crashed into a hostel of BJ Medical College. Families of the plane crash victims have pled with authorities to release the full remains of their family members, as opposed to parts, according to a TOI report. On Saturday, a man was seen pleading before the officials to hand over all the remains of his family members for the last rites, but he was told that this was an improbable task, the report said. 'It was hard to convince him,' an official was quoted as saying. Families of the crash victims continue to throng outside the Civil Hospital's mortuary as authorities carry out DNA tests. As per additional medical superintendent of BJ Medical College, Rajnish Patel, a total of 32 bodies have been recognised through the DNA sampling process and 12 bodies have been handed over to the families. Of this, Patil added that eight bodies were handed over to the families as no DNA testing for required for indication. However, as the process continues, it has drawn hurdles as well. As reported by TOI, in a peculiar case, a repeat DNA sampling will be done after a family member of a victim found two heads inside one body bag. "This will require the DNA sampling process to be repeated as the parts belong to two victims and shouldn't be in the same bag,' the report quoted a senior official at the Civil Hospital. The Air India plane crash of Thursday marked the first fatal crash for a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. The plane, which was bound for London's Gatwick airport, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel Vallabhbhai International Airport. The Ahmedabad plane crash has also sparked a multi-national investigation into the incident with experts from US and UK flying in to assess the situation. The flight, carrying 242 passengers and cabin crew, crashed into BJ Medical College's student hostel. Of the 242 people on board, a 40-year-old Indian-origin British national is the sole survivor of the plane crash.
